The United States has ceded the oceans to its enemies. We can no longer take freedom of the seas for granted.
Very few Americans—or, for that matter, very few people on the planet—can remember a time when freedom of the seas was in question. But for most of human history, there was no such guarantee. Pirates, predatory states, and the fleets of great powers did as they pleased. The current reality, which dates only to the end of World War II, makes possible the commercial shipping that handles more than 80 percent of all global trade by volume—oil and natural gas, grain and raw ores, manufactured goods of every kind. Because freedom of the seas, in our lifetime, has seemed like a default condition, it is easy to think of it—if we think of it at all—as akin to Earth’s rotation or the force of gravity: as just the way things are, rather than as a man-made construct that needs to be maintained and enforced.
But what if the safe transit of ships could no longer be assumed? What if the oceans were no longer free?

WNU Editor: The above article makes the case on why America needs a strong navy. But will the White House and Congress spend the money to make it happen? If the recent budget request for the US Navy and Marine Corps is any indication (link here), the answer is no.

Until you get some decent military and political leadership, spending more money on the navy is questionable, just look at the USS Ford. 14 plus years in building, testing and evaluation. it is just getting on its feet.

The most I got out of Kristol's wiki entry is that he hated Trump and therefore was leaving the Republican party. that tells me that Kristol does not stand on principle, Therefore IMO he is not coherent. Another way of stating it is inchoate.

Suria: Trump wanted to pull put. Bureaucrats defied the lawful order of a president. They are not in jail. The benefit of a Trump pull out is that at least we would or should have had a conversation as to why we are there. Very hard to wage a war when 30% of some such stat of people are against it. The president cannot be the only leader making the case for war. I think we should be in Syria and I also support pulling out. We should really not be there until we have a conversation about our objective(s).
If we did a poll on the street what would polled Americans say why we were in Syria?
Jailing people like Wilson(D) did in WW1 is not the way to go. People should be persuaded.
Now we might be leaving Syria but unlike under Trump it will not be by choice, but could be more like a force out. Do you approve of that look?

Now, my considered view, a worthwhile one so pay attention. If you skim through the posts here you get the impression that the US is in major free fall, has become a second-rate power. That is not so. China is clearly increasing its move toward becoming a major world player, but Russia has fallen far from where it had once been. China has major demographic problems, and its economy counts on America a great deal, still. The US military and its economy are still in place, making it the world's number one power.
