Washington Post: U.S. eases sanctions on Venezuelan oil after Maduro agrees to elections
The Biden administration on Wednesday eased oil, gas and gold sanctions against Venezuela a day after the government of President Nicolás Maduro and the U.S.-backed opposition agreed to terms for a competitive presidential election next year.
The Treasury Department issued a general license authorizing U.S. companies to engage in long-barred transactions primarily in the state-controlled energy sector.
It said the license is to be valid for six months, to be renewed only if the authoritarian socialist government “meets its commitments” for elections and “with respect to those who are wrongfully detained.”

Let's take that statement to be true (I agree with QNU and I believe it to be so).
If the deal is a joke, then one or both parties to it must be a joke. If one of the parties is evil, they obviously are agreeing to it, because it benefits them. They could steal the election or engage in suppressing the political opposition. Is not the US's problem with the Venezuelan government that they have suppressed the political opposition in the past?
What new guarantees does the US have that the Maduro government, who has made certain Russian trolls here gay, will not engage in oppression again?
