Who Will Replace Boris Johnson?

The resignation of Boris Johnson as Tory leader after ministers and MPs made clear his position was untenable has led to much discussion over who could replace him. Bookmakers are currently making Rishi Sunak - who quit as Chancellor only two days ago - and Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab joint favourites at 4/1. But there are a series of other potential frontrunners to replace Mr Johnson as Prime Minister, such as Penny Mordaunt and Ben Wallace who are both at 5/1. Others on the list include Sajid Javid - the most experienced candidate having served as Home Secretary and Chancellor - and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss at 7/1. Also in the running is Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi at 8/1 and Jeremy Hunt at 10/1. It comes as a YouGov survey of 716 Tory party members shows a diverse field in the race to replace Mr Johnson - but Mr Wallace the clear favourite in head-to-heads. Mr Wallace tops the overall list in the snap poll at 13 per cent, just ahead of Ms Mordaunt at 12 per cent, Mr Sunak at 10 per cent and Ms Truss at 8 per cent. But Mr Wallace then wins all of his match-ups by wide margins - with his closest competitor being Mr Sunak, whom he sees off by 51 per cent to 30 per cent. Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson finally resigned today, ending an unprecedented political crisis that has paralyzed the country's government after more than 50 government ministers quit and told him to go.

Statista: Majority Says Johnson Should Go 57 

percent of the public believe UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson should resign, according to a snap poll carried out by YouGov on April 12, the day he was found to have broken the law over ‘partygate.’ Johnson is the first ever UK prime minister to be caught breaking the law while in office. He now faces calls to step aside from Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, the Welsh and Scottish first ministers, as well as Conservative MP Tory Nigel Mills, as the Independent reports. According to British law however, it is up to him, or the majority of his party, to choose whether or not to stand aside. At present, he has given no indication of doing so.

The Guardian: Boris Johnson: it was 50-50 whether to put me on ventilator

Prime minister tells of his stay in intensive care after he contracted coronavirus.

Boris Johnson has spoken of his dramatic stay in intensive care as doctors faced a “50-50” decision on whether to put him on a ventilator and plans were drawn up on how to announce his death.

In an interview with the Sun on Sunday, the prime minister said he needed “litres and litres” of oxygen but he got through his ordeal with “terrible buoyancy” that left him convinced he could make it.

He also admitted he had worked throughout the early stage of his illness and not taken the disease seriously enough, having to be “forced” to go to hospital on the advice of doctors. Johnson came out of a three-night stay in intensive care at St Thomas’ hospital in Westminster on 9 April.

In a separate interview with Monday’s Sun, Johnson also revealed how he clapped for carers from his hospital ward.

Boris Johnson thanked the NHS for saving his live and the public for their own 'sacrifice' today as he was reunited with pregnant fiancée Carrie Symonds following his discharge from hospital.

Following a week at St Thomas's Hospital with coronavirus - including three nights in intensive care - he stopped on his way to recuperate at Chequers to record a message to the nation in Downing Street.

The couple - and their dog Dilyn - were seen together in the back of an official government car and in scenes which may raise some eyebrows neither they nor the driver or bodyguard were wearing masks.

The PM could be seen with his head down in the back of the car as it drew up this afternoon.

Boris Johnson was tonight taken out of intensive care in a sign he is winning his coronavirus battle.

The Prime Minister, who has been in hospital since Sunday, has spent three nights in a high-dependency unit at St Thomas' Hospital in central London after his condition deteriorated.

The announcement came just hours after Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who has been standing in for him while he was incapacitated, said he was making 'positive steps forward' in his treatment.

This evening a No 10 spokesman said: 'The Prime Minister has been moved this evening from intensive care back to the ward, where he will receive close monitoring during the early phase of his recovery.

Boris Johnson was last night moved to intensive care after his coronavirus condition worsened, forcing him to temporarily delegate his responsibilities while he is treated by doctors.

The Prime Minister was transferred to the ICU at St Thomas' Hospital in London at 7pm yesterday - 11 days after testing positive for the deadly disease.

Only two hours earlier, Downing Street were insisting he was still spearheading the government's coronavirus response, despite de facto deputy Dominic Raab chairing the morning crisis meeting.

Yet shortly after the Foreign Secretary left the Number 10 podium following the daily 5pm press briefing, Mr Johnson suffered breathing problems and was given oxygen.

Boris Johnson has tonight been taken to hospital after struggling to shake off persistent coronavirus symptoms.

Downing Street stressed that the Prime Minister will undergo tests merely as a precaution, on the advice of his doctor.

His admittance to an undisclosed London NHS hospital comes 10 days after he first tested positive for the infection and began self-isolating in his Number 11 flat.

In a Twitter video on Friday, an exhausted-looking Mr Johnson revealed he was still suffering from a high temperature.

Both Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock dramatically announced they are suffering from coronavirus today - threatening to send the government's response into chaos.

The Prime Minister said he had tested positive for the disease, after developing a temperature and cough yesterday afternoon, and being advised by Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty to get checked.

The 55-year-old insisted he only has 'mild' symptoms', and will be continuing to lead the national response over video-conference. The PM will stay in his flat in No11 - from where he chaired a meeting of the 'war Cabinet' this morning - and aides will leave meals and work outside the door.

And within hours Mr Hancock had revealed he also has the virus. 'I've tested positive. Thankfully my symptoms are mild and I'm working from home & self-isolating,' he tweeted.

Senior Cabinet ministers are said to be at war over who gets to replace Boris Johnson in leading the nation if the Prime Minister comes down with coronavirus.

No 10 is believed to have set up a 'designated survivor' plan setting out who takes over if Mr Johnson becomes ill and is unable to continue working.

Dominic Raab, the Foreign Secretary and First Secretary of State, will take on the top job should it occur.

Boris Johnson today branded coronavirus the 'worst public health crisis in a generation' and warned that 'many more' people are going to die - but still held off drastic measures.

Mr Johnson denied knowledge of the extraordinary conversation caught on camera at a reception last night, during which Mr Trudeau appeared to lampoon Mr Trump as other leaders laughed.

Boris Johnson has vowed to stay on as the UK's Prime Minister even if he fails to secure a deal to leave the European Union, saying only his Conservative Government can deliver Brexit on October 31, no matter what.

At the beginning of his party's annual conference in Manchester, Mr Johnson said he wanted to rally his party with the "do-or-die" message that he will deliver Brexit by the end of October, with or without a deal.

But there are hurdles to clear, not least of which is what Mr Johnson calls "the surrender act" — the law Parliament passed to force the Prime Minister to request a Brexit delay if he has not secured a deal with Brussels by the October 17-18 EU summit.
