New Study Says More Than 238,000 People Died In Global Conflicts Last Year

DW: Global conflicts: Death toll at highest in 21st century

Conflict deaths are higher than they have ever been this century with over 238,000 people killed in conflicts last year.

Since the 21st century began, war has never cost humanity so much. The number of conflict deaths almost doubled in 2022 compared to the previous year. And war caused a 13% loss of global GDP, according to the Global Peace Index, released on Wednesday by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

The major new survey by the global think tank said that the average level of "global peacefulness" had sunk for the ninth year in a row, with conflict deaths topping the previous global peak reached in 2014 during the Syrian Civil War.

The dramatic increase in death rates was mostly driven by the war in Ukraine, where 83,000 people were killed in the past year, though the bloodiest conflict was in Ethiopia, where 100,000 people lost their lives.

Global Peace Index 2022 Report Has Been Released

The Independent: Global Peace Index 2022: War in Ukraine and political terror linked to worst state of global peace in 15 years

Peace across the world has declined to the lowest level in 15 years as uncertainty over post-Covid economic recovery and Russia’s war in Ukraine loom large, according to the 16th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI).

The report, produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) thinktank, said the rise in food and fuel costs have increased food insecurity and political instability globally, especially in south Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

The average level of global peacefulness deteriorated by 0.3 per cent in 2021, the report said.

Global Peace Index Study Shows The World Is Becoming 'Less Peaceful'

U.S. News and World Report: The Most and Least Peaceful Countries in the World

Global study finds the world has gradually grown less peaceful.

The world has become less peaceful in the past year as longstanding global conflicts remain unresolved and the United States and other world powers face political instability, an international study finds.

The 12th annual "Global Peace Index" by the Institute for Economics and Peace, an independent non-profit think tank based in Australia, scored 163 independent states and territories according to their levels of peacefulness. It found the world became 0.27 percent less peaceful compared to 2016, with 92 countries deteriorating in peacefulness and just 71 countries improving. The think tank published the index on Wednesday.

Global Peace Index: Worldwide Terrorism at All-Time High

VOA: Report: Worldwide Terrorism at All-Time High

Worldwide terrorism is at an all-time high, and violence cost the global economy $14.3 trillion last year, with a $2.5 trillion impact in the United States alone.

These new figures from the latest Global Peace Index, a report on conflict and security, indicate that world peace has been deteriorating for the past decade, largely driven by terrorism and conflicts in the Middle East and Northern Africa.

The study says the decline interrupts long-term improvements the world had been making since the end of World War II.

According to the report, the annual number of terrorism incidents has almost tripled since 2011.

Latest Global Peace Index Report Confirms The Rise Of Violence In The Middle East

A snapshot of the Global Peace Index 2016

Reuters: Global violence worsens, driven by Middle East conflicts: peace index

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The world has become increasingly violent with deaths from conflict at a 25-year high, terrorist attacks at an all-time high and more people displaced than at any time since World War Two, the 2016 Global Peace Index showed on Wednesday.

The annual index, which measures 23 indicators including incidents of violent crime, countries' levels of militarization and weapons imports, said intensifying conflicts in the Middle East were mostly to blame.

But beyond the Middle East, the world was actually becoming more peaceful, researchers behind the index said.

Conflicts Cost 13 Percent Of World GDP

The Guardian: Global cost of conflict reaches $14.3tn, says report

Global Peace Index shows wars wreaking havoc on economies as world spends more than 13% of GDP on costs related to violence

The world’s steady shift away from peace and into conflict inflicted a $14.3tn (£9.21tn) cost on the global economy last year, as nations ramped up military spending and more people were driven from their jobs, according to the latest Global Peace Index (GPI).

Fighting in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan had wreaked havoc on economies and helped push the level of peace in the world to its lowest since 2008, the index showed. Providing services for refugees and internally displaced people was one of the biggest costs of last year’s violence.

Global Peace Index: World Has Grown More Violent In The Past Six Years

Global Peace Index 2013: The Full List -- The Guardian

The Global Peace Index for 2013 shows how world peace has changed over time - unsurprisingly, the violent conflict in Syria has had a big impact on the findings

The world has become a less peaceful place according to the Institute for Economics and Peace. In their annual report, the Global Peace Index, they rank 162 countries by measuring security in society, the extent of conflict and the degree of militarisation. This year's report reinforces a longer term pattern they have noted: since 2008 levels of peace have fallen by 5%.

Their findings are not altogether bleak. While the number and intensity of internal conflicts has risen in recent years, hostility between states has fallen. Overall, they found that 110 states have become less peaceful and that 48 have become more so.

Global Peace Index: World More Peaceful In 2012

Despite Syria, World More Peaceful In 2012: Survey -- Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - Despite an escalating conflict in Syria and mounting civil unrest in Europe, the world became a more peaceful place in the last year, a study showed on Tuesday, highlighting particular improvement in Africa.

The Global Peace Index, produced by the Australia and U.S.-based Institute for Economics and Peace, showed its first improvement in two years. For the first time, sub-Saharan Africa was no longer the world's least peaceful region, losing that dubious distinction to the Middle East and North Africa in the aftermath of the "Arab Spring".
