BBC: Hosni Mubarak: Former Egyptian President dies aged 91

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak – ousted by the military in 2011 – has died in Cairo at the age of 91.

Mubarak spent three decades in office before a popular uprising swept Egypt.

He was found guilty of complicity in the killing of protesters during the revolution. That conviction was overturned and was freed in March 2017.

His death was confirmed by Egyptian state news on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, the Al-Watan website reported that he died at a military hospital.

Mubarak underwent surgery in late January and was photographed with his grandson as he recovered.

New York Times: Hosni Mubarak Is Freed, to Dismay of Many in Egypt

CAIRO — Six years after roaring crowds ousted him at the peak of the Arab Spring, former President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt was freed on Friday from the Cairo hospital where he had been detained, capping a long and largely fruitless effort to hold him accountable for human rights abuses and endemic corruption during his three decades of rule.

Mr. Mubarak, 88, was taken from the Maadi Military Hospital in southern Cairo, where he had been living under guard in a room with a view of the Nile, to his mansion in the upmarket suburb of Heliopolis.

“He went home at 8:30 this morning,” his longtime lawyer, Farid el-Deeb, who has stewarded Mr. Mubarak through a tangled cluster of prosecutions since 2011, said by telephone. “I don’t have further details, but he is home and all is well now.”

Ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak says he personally started the Yom Kippur War in October, 1973, by attacking an Israeli communications base in his fighter jet six minutes before the rest of the Arab armies’ surprise attack on the Jewish state began.

In most accounts, the war began at 2:00 pm on October 6, when at least 200 Egyptian fighter planes simultaneously hit three Israeli airbases, Israel’s missile batteries, command centers, numerous artillery positions, and radar installations, to devastating effect.

Mubarak, who was the Egyptian Air Force commander at the time, said only three other people knew of his mission, including former president Anwar Sadat.

CAIRO— Hosni Mubarak was released from prison to house arrest on Thursday, Egyptian media showing images of the 85-year-old former autocrat smiling as he was wheeled on a gurney from a helicopter after his airlift from the penitentiary.

News of his release caused barely a ripple of reaction from a country still reeling in the violent struggle for power in the wake of his nearly 30-year rule.

Mr. Mubarak was transferred to a military hospital in the Cairo suburb of Maadi, where former leader is expected to continue his convalescence. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Sunday to address murder charges for failing to prevent the deaths of protesters during the revolution that ousted him.

The two sons of Hosni Mubarak have been moved to his bedside after the former Egyptian president's heart briefly stopped beating, according to officials.

A defibrillator twice had to be used on Mr Mubarak as he lay in the Tora prison hospital in Cairo after doctors were unable to find a pulse, they said.

He is said to have gone into a fast decline since being transferred to the prison after receiving a life sentence on June 2 for complicity in the deaths of hundreds of protesters shot during the uprising that led to his overthrow in February last year.

Celebration And Dissatisfaction Greet Mubarak Verdict -- BBC

After a long wait in the harsh sun outside Cairo's Police Academy courthouse, relatives of some of those killed in last year's uprising were quick to celebrate the life sentences handed down to the ousted president Hosni Mubarak and his hated interior minister Habib al-Adly, for complicity to murder.

There were loud cracks of fireworks and groups marched jubilantly past the surrounding lines of riot police shouting "Egypt, Egypt" and "God is great".

Some kissed the concrete beneath their feet and kneeled in prayer.

The first signs of dissatisfaction came from inside the courtroom when six police commanders were cleared of involvement in the deaths of the protesters. A corruption case against Mubarak and his two sons was also dismissed.

The two sons of ousted President Hosni Mubarak have an estimated $340 million (£215m) in Swiss bank accounts, a senior Egyptian Justice Ministry official said on Monday.

Assem al-Gohary said Swiss authorities are investigating whether one of the sons, Alaa, 49, was involved in money laundering along with other ex-regime figures.

Mr Mubarak and his sons have been charged with corruption and all three are under arrest in Egypt. Mr Mubarak is also charged with complicity in the killing of about 850 protesters during the Jan 25 to Feb 11 Egyptian uprising.

Mubarak To Face Public Trial In Cairo Next Week -- McClatchy News

CAIRO — Toppled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, his two sons and several others charged with plotting to kill hundreds of anti-government demonstrators will face a very public trial in Cairo beginning next Wednesday, a senior Egyptian official said Thursday.

The announcement — which came after the Egyptian health minister reported that Mubarak's health was stable enough for him to be transported to Cairo — allayed fears among many Egyptians that the 83-year-old former president would escape a trial or it would be postponed, which probably would have fueled massive protests.

FORMER Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's health deteriorated last night hours after he and his two sons were placed under 15-day detention in an inquiry into violence against protesters.
