Microsoft's $22 Billion Smart Goggles Failed US Army Tests

Microsoft received $480 million in 2018 to develop prototypes, but the technology is still 'experiencing issues' and making soldiers testing it nauseas, along with giving them headaches

Daily Mail: Microsoft's HoloLens makes soldiers SICK: 80% of US military testing the goggles suffered 'mission-affecting physical impairments' - and some fear it will get the KILLED in combat

* Microsoft was awarded a contract in 2018 to develop a military-grade HoloLense

* The augmented reality headset displays information on the screen, such as coordinates or orders, while allowing users to interact with the physical world

* However, testing shows it causes nausea, headaches and eyestrain in less than three hours of use

* The device is also not popular among soldiers, which leads Congress to question if it should purchase 100,000 devices or end the partnership

Congress is deciding whether to give $424.2 million to purchase more military-grade HoloLense headsets from Microsoft after more than 80 percent of soldiers testing the device experienced 'mission-affecting physical impairments' in less than three hours of use - and some fear the technology could get them killed in combat

The US Army has been testing the augmented reality device since 2018, which claims to improve training and missions on the battlefield by projecting digital information on the screen while allowing users to interact with the physical world.

The HoloLens, however, is causing headaches, eyestrain and nausea, and acceptance of the technology 'remains low' - a finding that could pause the entire project.

Bloomberg: Microsoft Combat Goggles Win First US Army Approval for Delivery

(Bloomberg) -- The US Army is taking delivery of a first batch of high-tech combat goggles made by Microsoft Corp., citing encouraging results from testing in the field.

Assistant Secretary for Acquisition Douglas Bush has “cleared the Army to begin accepting” some of the 5,000 sets of goggles, spokesman Jamal Beck said in a statement.

Their delivery had been placed on hold over concern about the device’s performance until more rigorous testing took place. Based on the test results so far the service “is adjusting its fielding plan to allow for time to correct deficiencies and also field to units that are focused on training activities,” Beck said.

"There are no results for tank man," the Bing website reads after searching for the term.

Bing, the search engine owned by Microsoft, is not displaying image results for a search for "Tank man," even when searching from the United States. The apparent censorship comes on the anniversary of China's violent crackdown on protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989.

"There are no results for tank man," the Bing website reads after searching for the term. "Tank man" relates to the infamous image of a single protester standing in front of a line of Chinese tanks during the crackdown.

Chinese To Drop Microsoft Windows From Its Military Devices

Tech Radar: China is dropping Windows from its military devices

Chinese military will develop a custom OS for improved security

As tensions between the US and China grow due to an escalating trade war, the Chinese military has decided to stop using Microsoft Windows in favor of its own custom operating system.

The decision was revealed in a recent issue of the Canadian military magazine Kanwa Asian Defence which reported that Chinese military officials will not be using Linux as their new OS but will develop their own custom operating system for improved security.

As a result of Edward Snowden and other big leaks, the Chinese government knows full well what the US is capable of when it comes to hacking devices running Windows, Mac and Linux.

A group of Microsoft workers are demanding the company cancel a contract supplying the U.S. Army with HoloLens headsets that they say would turn real-world battlefields into a video game.

Microsoft's head-mounted HoloLens displays use augmented reality, which means viewers can see virtual imagery superimposed over the scenery in front of them.

A letter signed by more than 50 Microsoft employees and circulated on an internal messaging board said the technology could help soldiers spot - and kill - adversaries on the battlefield.
