Defense News: Poland to buy 486 HIMARS launchers from Lockheed Martin

WARSAW, Poland — Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak on Monday approved a framework deal to buy 486 launcher-loader module kits for its M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems.

“In line with the adopted schedule, deliveries are expected to begin in 2025,” the Armament Agency, which is the ministry’s unit responsible for purchases of weapons and military gear, said in a statement.

The acquisition of the Lockheed Martin-made launchers is part of the Polish army’s Homar-A program. The nation’s defense industry will also be involved in the effort by supplying products and components, according to the agency.

Poland Wants To Have The Strongest Land Force In Europe Within Two Years

Polish soldiers on tanks take part in a military parade in Warsaw on Polish Army Day, 15 August, 2023, to commemorate the anniversary of the 1920 victory over Soviet Russia.Wojtek Radwanski/AFP

Euronews: Poland said its army will soon be the strongest in Europe. But is that possible?

Through a series of major arms deals, Poland is set to establish military supremacy in continental Europe - though the high cost of this expansion is a source of concern for some experts.

If everything goes according to plan, Europe will soon have a new military superpower: Poland.

The leaders of the country’s ruling party Law & Justice (PiS) have recently announced that the country is set to have the strongest army in Europe within the next two years, thanks to the major modernisation of its existing equipment and a massive reinforcement of its troops.

Update: Poland Aims To Create Largest Army in Europe Within Two Years

WNU Editor: I am sure Poland can achieve its goals of having the strongest land force in Europe (after Russia) in the coming years. The big question that remains unanswered is "can they afford it"? Will the public be willing to pay more in taxes and have less services to fund and support such a large military force? Only time will tell.

Poland Holds Biggest Military Parade Since The Cold War

CNN: Poland holds biggest military parade in decades, as its clout in Europe grows

Poland is holding its largest military parade in decades on Tuesday, in a flex of defensive muscle that comes as tensions rise on the border between the NATO nation and key Russian ally Belarus.

Poland’s Defense Ministry said the celebration of Polish Army Day on Tuesday would be marked by a showcase that includes 200 units of Polish and foreign military equipment, 92 aircraft and 2,000 service members.

The parade includes some of the latest technology Poland has in its arsenal, including US-made M1A1 Abrams tanks, South Korean K2 tanks and K9 self-propelled howitzers, HIMARS rocket launchers, Krab self-propelled howitzers, as well as US-made Patriot missile batteries systems, which are part of the Polish “WISŁA” air defense system.

Poland Wants Nuclear Weapons On Its Soil

Warzone/The Drive: Poland Wants To Host NATO Nukes To Counter Russia

Poland says Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus are driving its desire to be part of NATO’s nuclear sharing program.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki says his country wants to join NATO's nuclear weapon sharing program. This is in direct response to Russia's deployment of some of its own nuclear weapons to neighboring Belarus. This also comes as Poland is pushing ahead with a massive conventional rearmament effort that was accelerated in the wake of the all-out Russian invasion of Ukraine last year.

Prime Minister Morawiecki made his remarks about Poland's desire to become of NATO's nuclear weapon sharing arrangements in response to a question at a press conference on the sidelines of a European Union in Brussels, Belgium, earlier today.

Polish President Signs 'Tusk Law' To Probe Russian Influence

Politico: Polish opposition denounces new commission to probe Russian influence

Opponents fear the Law and Justice party is trying to eliminate opposition leader Donald Tusk from national politics.

Poland’s parliament narrowly passed a law setting up a commission to investigate Russian political influence in the country, but the opposition denounces the effort as a political witch hunt aimed at hurting it before this fall’s parliamentary election.

After a stormy debate, parliament passed the bill late Friday, overturning the upper house Senate’s rejection of the legislation.

The ostensible goal is to examine the Kremlin’s influence from 2007 to 2022 — a period covering the 2007-2015 governments of the Civic Platform party led by Donald Tusk as well as the current Law and Justice (PiS) party government.

But the concern is that the current government, embroiled in a battle with the European Commission over accusations that it’s backsliding on rule of law and democracy, will use it as a bludgeon against its political foes.

Polish Ambassador To France Says Poland Will Be Forced To Enter The War If Ukraine Cannot Defend Itself

Ukrayinska Pravda: Polish Ambassador to France: Poland will be forced to enter war if Ukraine fails to defend itself

Poland’s Ambassador to France Jan Emeryk Rościszewski said in an interview that a situation could arise in which Poland would have to enter the war. The embassy urged audiences to refrain from sensationalising his words.

Source: Rościszewski in an interview with LCI, a French TV channel; Rzeczpospolita, a Polish media outlet, citing Poland’s Embassy in France

Quote from Rościszewski: "It is not NATO, Poland or Slovakia that are mounting ever more pressure, but Russia, which has invaded Ukraine. Russia, which is seizing its territories. Russia, which is killing its people. And Russia, which is abducting Ukrainian children.

Therefore, either Ukraine will defend its independence today, or we will have to enter this conflict. Because our main values, which were the basis of our civilization and our culture will be threatened. Therefore, we will have no choice but to enter the conflict."

Poland's incumbent President Andrzej Duda Wins Sunday's Presidential Election

BBC: Poland's Duda narrowly beats Trzaskowski in presidential vote

Poland's incumbent President Andrzej Duda has narrowly beaten challenger Rafal Trzaskowski in Sunday's presidential vote.

The National Electoral Commission said Mr Duda had won 51.2% of the votes.

It is Poland's slimmest presidential election victory since the end of communism in 1989.

One of the major issues of the election was the future of the country's strained relations with the European Union.

Mr Duda is a social conservative allied with the government led by the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, while Mr Trzaskowski is the socially liberal mayor of Warsaw.

Polish Presidential Election Still Remains Too Close To Call

Politico: Polish presidential election remains too close to call

Both candidates claimed victory.

RZESZÓW, Poland — Poland was on tenterhooks Monday awaiting the result of its presidential election after exit polls showed the race was too close to call.

Incumbent President Andrzej Duda, backed by the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, took 50.8 percent, while his opponent, centrist Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski of the Civic Platform party, had 49.2 percent. The exit poll, released at midnight local time, has a 1-percentage-point margin of error.

The result is so close that Poland’s electoral commission announced late Sunday night that it would not be releasing partial vote counts, only making a final announcement once all the ballots have been counted either late Monday or Tuesday.

Parliamentary Elections In Poland Today

DW: Poland's ruling PiS party wins most votes, according to exit polls

Poland's ruling Law and Justice party is set to be victorious in the parliamentary elections, exit polls say. The main opposition parties were still hoping to gain enough support to form a coalition government together.

Exit polls are indicating that Poland's conservative ruling party Law and Justice party (PiS) will win the most votes in the country's parliamentary elections.

An exit poll projected PiS would win Sunday's parliamentary election with 43.6% of the vote. The opposition Civic Coalition, comprising the Civic Platform (PO) party formerly led by European Council President Donald Tusk and some smaller liberal parties, came second with 27.4%, according to the Ipsos poll.

U.S. Nuclear Missiles In Poland?

© AFP 2018 / NATALIA DOBRYSZYCKA

Sputnik: Poland Plays Down Reported Plans to Host US Nukes Amid INF Treaty Collapse

European countries have voiced their concerns over nuclear security after the United States announced its withdrawal from the INF Treaty, a major 1987 nuclear arms agreements with Russia. Poland, a NATO frontline nation, supports the US' withdrawal from the pact, while accusing Russia of what it calls aggressive behaviour.

Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied a report suggesting that the country's top diplomat wants the United States to deploy its nuclear weapons in the country.

On Friday, Germany's Spiegel newspaper published a conversation with Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz, who was quoted as saying that it is in Warsaw's interest that "American troops and nuclear missiles are stationed on the continent" after the end of the Cold War-era nuclear arms treaty between Washington and Moscow.

Pressure Builds On Poland To Withdraw Its Holocaust Bill

VOA: Pressure Mounts on Poland to Back Away From Holocaust Bill

WARSAW, POLAND — Poland is seeing a resurgence of anti-Semitism over pending legislation that would impose jail terms for suggestions that the nation was complicit in the Holocaust, local minority groups warned, as pressure mounts on the president to veto the bill.

Parliament passed the measure Thursday, drawing outrage from Israel, U.S. criticism and condemnation from a number of international organizations. President Andrzej Duda has 21 days to decide whether to sign it into law.

The bill would impose prison sentences of up to three years for mentioning the term "Polish death camps" and for suggesting "publicly and against the facts" complicity on the part of the Polish nation or state in Nazi Germany's crimes.
