Killing Fields In Philippines

The Guardian: Rodrigo Duterte's drug war is 'large-scale murdering enterprise' says Amnesty

New report details systematic killing of poor and calls for UN investigation into crimes against humanity

The president of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte is carrying out a “large-scale murdering enterprise” and should be investigated by the UN for crimes against humanity, according to a new Amnesty report into his so-called war on drugs.

It has been three years since Duterte pledged to wipe out drug abuse in the Philippines by giving police unprecedented powers and near total impunity to kill any suspected drug addicts or dealers. Amnesty’s new report detailed how the systematic killing of the urban poor has continued on such a scale it now amounts to crimes against humanity.

MANILA (Reuters) - Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte is taking seriously the U.S. Intelligence Community’s report tagging the firebrand leader a threat to democracy in Southeast Asia, his spokesman said on Wednesday.

The report, produced by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, places Duterte alongside Cambodian’s Hun Sen, the Rohingya crisis and Thailand’s military-backed constitution as threats to democracy.

“We view this declaration from no less than the intelligence department of the United States with some concern...,” presidential spokesman Harry Roque told DZMM radio.

Duterte was delivering a prepared speech at the Hero's Cemetery on the outskirts of Manila and veered off-script to address impromptu comments from Jovie Espenido - the police chief of a town in the south where the mayor was killed in a raid.

Reuters: Duterte says China's Xi threatened war if Philippines drills for oil

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Friday Chinese counterpart China Xi Jinping had warned him there would be war if Manila tried to enforce an arbitration ruling and drill for oil in a disputed part of the South China Sea.

In remarks that could infuriate China, Duterte hit back at domestic critics who said he has gone soft on Beijing by refusing to push it to comply with an award last year by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, which ruled largely in favor of the Philippines.

Duterte said he discussed it with Xi when the two met in Beijing on Monday, and got a firm, but friendly warning.

"We intend to drill oil there, if it's yours, well, that's your view, but my view is, I can drill the oil, if there is some inside the bowels of the earth because it is ours," Duterte said in a speech, recalling his conversation with Xi.

"His response to me, 'we're friends, we don't want to quarrel with you, we want to maintain the presence of warm relationship, but if you force the issue, we'll go to war."

Philippine President Duterte Asks The U.S. Ambassador On Why Did America Not Deploy An Armada Of Warships To Stop China Constructing Man-Made Islands

ABS-CBN: Duterte: US should've sent fleet to halt China structures in disputed isles

MANILA - If the United States really wanted to avoid trouble in disputed territories in the South China Sea, it should have sent a fleet to stop China from building structures there, President Rodrigo Duterte said.

In a conversation with US Ambassador Sung Kim earlier this week, Duterte said he was surprised that America did not utilize its navy’s 7th Fleet, which is headquartered in Japan and patrols the Pacific Ocean, to stop Chinese construction activities once they were spotted by reconnaissance units.

“Sabi ko, I am surprised Mr. Ambassador, because had America really wanted to avoid trouble early on…why did you not send the armada of the 7th fleet?…and say to their face, ‘You cannot build manmade structures sa high seas,’” Duterte said in a speech in Mindoro on Wednesday.

Washington Post: Philippines President Duterte tells Obama to ‘go to hell’

If it's Tuesday, Rodrigo Duterte, president of the Philippines, must be swearing at President Obama.

In a profanity-laced speech in Manila, Duterte lashed out once again at the U.S. for criticizing his self-proclaimed "drug war," saying Obama can "go to hell."

The European Union, he added, "better choose purgatory, hell is filled up.”

Duterte swept to power with a promise to "kill all" the criminals in the Philippines. Since he took power in July, more than 3,000 Filipinos have been killed, either shot in police raids or gunned down by assassins, often after being named by police.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte Likens Himself To Adolf Hitler

Sydney Morning Herald: Philippines' Rodrigo Duterte likens himself to Adolf Hitler, wants to kill millions of drug

Manila: Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has likened himself to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler in the latest of a series of rash outbursts that are alarming his country's allies in Asia, including the United States.

In a rambling speech in his hometown of Davao, Mr Duterte told reporters that he had been "portrayed to be some cousin of Hitler" by critics.

Noting that Hitler had murdered millions of Jews, Mr Duterte said: "There are three million drug addicts (in the Philippines). I'd be happy to slaughter them."

The 71 year-old firebrand president then said "if Germany had Hitler, the Philippines would have…" before pausing and pointing to himself.

Witness: Philippine President Duterte Ran Death Squad As Mayor

CNN: Philippines President Duterte 'ordered death squad hits while mayor'

(CNN)Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte's office has denied accusations that Duterte ordered a militia group to carry out extrajudicial killings while he was mayor of Davao City.

The claims were made by a witness who was testifying Thursday before a Philippines Senate committee set up to probe alleged extrajudicial killings in the three months since Duterte became president.

The man, who identified himself as Edgar Matobato, testified that he was part of the 300-member "Davao Death Squad" (DDS), which he alleges was run on the orders of Duterte.

Matobato testified the DDS killed alleged drug dealers and criminals in the southern city of Davao, on the order of Duterte when he was mayor, between 1988 and 2013. More than 1,000 were killed in Davao City alone, he claimed.
