BBC: Vladimir Putin makes little mention of Ukraine in new year speech 

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for united support of his army in his annual new year address, without explicitly referring to the war he is waging in Ukraine. 

The Kremlin leader hailed his soldiers as "heroes... at the forefront of the fight for truth". 

He also referenced economic issues, a key topic for many Russians, and declared 2024 the "year of the family". 

The address was a more subdued affair than the previous year's.

TASS: Putin announces he will run in 2024 presidential election  

Russia’s next presidential election is scheduled for March 17 

MOSCOW, December 8. /TASS/. Vladimir Putin will run for president in the 2024 election, he said in the Kremlin while talking to participants at a Heroes of the Fatherland Day ceremony. 

"I am going to run for president of the Russian Federation," Putin said. 

Artem Zhoga, speaker of the parliament of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the father of a fallen hero of the special military operation, asked him to run for re-election. 

Putin admitted that he thought long and hard about his future presidency. 

"Well, as for now, you are right. It is time to decide," he told Zhoga. 

President Vladimir Putin’s current term in office expires on May 7, 2024. Russia’s next presidential election is scheduled for March 17.

Top spokesperson laughs off media reports that Russian president is seriously ill. 

The Kremlin has brushed off claims that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ill, after speculative media reports that he’d suffered a cardiac arrest. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also dismissed speculation that Putin has used body doubles to cover for him in public appearances. 

“Talk of Vladimir Putin’s health problems is another canard,” Peskov said, according to Russian state-owned news agency Ria.ru, adding that “everything is fine with him.”

Newsweek: Putin's Bizarre Memory Lapse Sparks 'Dementia' Rumors 

Vladimir Putin got confused about the age of the child of a deputy mayor during a discussion at the Kremlin, sparking social media comment about the state of the Russian president's health. 

Unproven rumors have persisted about Putin's condition since the start of his full-scale invasion of Ukraine. These have included that the Russian president has cancer, Parkinson's disease, and even dementia. 

The Kremlin has insisted Putin is in good health. However, adding to the speculation was footage from Wednesday's meeting of the group "Russia—the Land of Opportunities," a non-profit set up in 2018 to help citizens develop business ideas.

* Russian president lapped up praise from a fervent crowd in Dagestan last night 

* It is the first time since before the pandemic he has attended such an event 

* His uncharacteristic behaviour has fuelled speculation it was a body double 

Vladimir Putin has been consolidating support in Russia following last week's failed Wagner rebellion with a rare meet-and-greet that saw him cheered by a crowd as he posed for selfies with young girls. 

Footage from last night's event - a presidential appearance during a trip to the city of Derbent in the Dagestan region of southern Russia - showed how he dived into a nighttime crowd like a Hollywood actor at a red carpet show. 

Seemingly imbued with fresh energy after averting a small scale civil war last week, the normally stoic and isolated Putin was uncharacteristically personable, shaking hands and planting kisses on the head of a young teenage girl who gushed over him and pleaded with her mother to snap a photo of her with the president.

Is The End Near For Putin?

Yevgeny Prigozhin’s short-lived “coup” attempt — if we indeed witnessed one — has left many understandably confused. One thing should be clear, however. This is the beginning of the end of Russia’s war in Ukraine — and likely also of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rule. 

First, here is what we know about the odd events of the past two days. After almost a year of Wagner Group owner Prigozhin’s near-constant and escalating verbal attacks against Russia’s Ministry of Defense, he commanded his mercenaries to march into Russia.

WNU Editor: As I had mentioned in the previous post .... From what I have seen heard, and read, there was little if any public support in Russia for this rebellion, and more importantly, all media (main stream and social), political, military, and economic leaders rallied around the Kremlin when the Wagners started their march towards Moscow. I am also now learning that 90% of the forces that make up the Wagner Group refused to participate in this rebellion. 

So is the end near for Putin? 

The answer is no. From what I have learned from my family, friends, and contacts in Russia, the vast majority of Russians believe they are now engaged in a war for the survival of the Russian Federation. Even those who I know who have opposed Putin for years are now 100% into this war. 

Bottom line. Russians are like Americans, they are not in the habit of removing their leaders during wartime. The debate on Putin's future will happen in Russia when the war is over.

The Telegraph: Putin’s exploits as KGB spy likely to have been exaggerated, investigation finds 

Vladimir Putin was not a Soviet super spy in East Germany in the 1980s but a plodding pen-pusher eager to please his superiors, an investigation has found. Germany’s Spiegel magazine investigated Mr Putin’s murky past on the suspicion that stories of his exploits as a KGB agent were exaggerated. 

Instead of conducting vital missions to hold back the forces of democracy, Spiegel said that Mr Putin was focused on “banal” administrative work during his KGB posting to Dresden, “endlessly sorting through travel applications for West German relatives or searching for potential informants among foreign students”.

Mr Putin was a 32-year-old officer when he was sent to Dresden in 1985, a tense time with the Kremlin’s grip over its vassal states fracturing.

BBC: Russia's Putin scraps trademark year-end news conference 

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not hold his traditional big year-end news conference, the Kremlin has said, for the first time in 10 years. 

But spokesman Dmitry Peskov said "we hope the president will after all find an opportunity to talk" to the media. 

No reason was given for the cancellation, but it comes amid growing unease among Russians over Mr Putin's decision to invade Ukraine in February. Russian troops have suffered a series of painful reverses since then.

WNU Editor: He is going to run again (unless the rumors on his health are true). And with most Russians supporting him, he will easily win. What also helps his election prospects is that most of his opponents are in jail and/or have fled the country. But a lot can happen between now and 2024. The Russian president, 70, launched an ongoing military invasion of neighbouring country Ukraine in February but now Kyiv Post correspondent Jason Jay Smart has claimed that he could be showing signs of having had intravenous chemotherapy and pointed out marks on his hands. 

Alongside screenshots of Vladimir's appearance on Russian news, he tweeted: "Videos released by Russian government Government news show what could be track marks, from IVs, on the hand of Putin. For the same event, the Kremlin released two videos: One with tons of watermarks (making the hand harder to see), the other without any shot of his hand."

RT: Ditching Russian gas no way to reach climate goals – Putin 

EU should have been better prepared for its green energy transition, the Russian president says 

The EU’s decision to slash natural gas imports while trying to reach climate goals was a mistake, President Vladimir Putin said on Monday during an environmental forum in Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East. 

“First, they (EU) jumped ahead, and then, after cutting off Russian gas supplies, returned everything that was reviled,” Putin stated. 

He emphasized that all nations are in favor of reducing emissions into the atmosphere, noting however that everything should be done in a timely manner. “And if you jump ahead, get cheap Russian gas, and then cut off the supply of this gas yourself and immediately switch back to everything that was previously condemned, including coal-fired generation, this, of course, is not the best option for solving global problems,” the Russian president said.

Russia is hosting the Tenth Moscow Conference on International Security, an event that brings together defense ministers, heads of international organizations, and experts and think-tank representatives from around the world. 

The collective West is purposely destroying the European security system with NATO moving further east, said Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, addressing the X Moscow Conference on International Security.  

"Western globalist elites are provoking chaos by rekindling old and inciting new conflicts, implementing a policy of so-called containment, while undermining any alternative, sovereign paths of development. Thus, they are desperately trying to preserve the hegemony and power that are slipping out of their grasp, trying to keep countries and peoples in the grip of a neo-colonial order,” Putin stated.

Only “truly sovereign” states will succeed after “enormous” geopolitical transformations, the Russian leader claimed 

A new epoch of world history is approaching and only “truly sovereign” states will be able to succeed in the changed environment, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday. 

Speaking at a business forum, Putin claimed that “truly revolutionary,” “enormous” changes would lead to the creation of a new, “harmonious, fairer and more community-focused and safe” world order. In this new epoch, “only truly sovereign states can ensure high growth dynamics,” he said.

William Burns' comment is a blow to Putin's critics who believed the Russian leader was ill. Vladimir Putin is “entirely too healthy,” CIA Director William Burns said Wednesday, throwing cold water on constant rumors that the Russian president is suffering from illness as he pursues his war on Ukraine. 

Burns, speaking at the Aspen Security Forum, noted that his declaration was “not a formal intelligence judgment.” Still, given his position, Burns’ comment could help dampen hopes among Putin’s adversaries that the Russian’s demise is near.
