CTV News/Canadian Press: Day after Trump win in Iowa, Trudeau says U.S. faces choice between optimism, retreat 

MONTREAL - Voters in the United States will likely face a choice in the November presidential election between optimism for the future, or nostalgia for a past that never existed, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday. 

And while a second Donald Trump presidency "won't be easy," Trudeau told a Montreal business audience, the federal government is prepared for that possibility. 

Trudeau made the comments a day after Trump handily won the Iowa Republican caucuses, with about 51 per cent of the vote, a result that gave the former president an early lead for the Republican nomination ahead of the country's November election.

OTTAWA — Ottawa’s cocktail scene creates some surreal partymates. 

Once Air Force One was wheels up from the Canadian capital Friday night, Justin Trudeau headed to an invite-only afterparty joined by plenty of people who are hurrying to end his longish run as prime minister. 

Trudeau may have scored plenty of wins and lots of photo ops during Biden’s two-day visit. But the afterglow already looks to be fading for a third-term government mired in controversy, blamed for cost of living anxieties and justifiably fatigued after three years of pandemic management. 

Katie Telford, the prime minister’s chief of staff, joined the mix of business leaders and political insiders who gathered at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre. Jenni Byrne, the fixer behind the rise of Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, was also in the crowd.

As for President Biden's trip to Canada.The Biden administration was pushing this during the President's visit to Ottawa .... U.S. wants Canada to take part in a global economic decoupling from China (Globe and Mail). A decoupling that is not going to happen in view of China being a major buyer of Canadian resources. There was also a US push for Canada to increase its defense spending .... PM details defence spending plans during Biden's visit — but the timelines are largely the same (CBC News). 

As for the US President himself. He had his usual "senior moments" (see below).

Leaders From U.S., Mexico and Canada Vow To Strengthen Economic Ties

 

UPI: As summit ends, U.S., Mexico and Canada agree to form joint economic committee 

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he, U.S. President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to strengthen their economic, trade and commercial relations with the creation of a new joint committee. 

Obrador said the committee will focus on planning trade in North America to increase self-sufficiency and development for their countries. Each nation will appoint four members for the creation of the committee, he said during a press conference at the close of the North American Leaders' Summit on Tuesday. 

The Mexican president was flanked by Biden and Trudeau during the event, following two days of meetings to discuss regional and global issues. The trio charted out plans to work together on economic issues, security and climate change.

CBC: U.S. military weighs funding mining projects in Canada amid rivalry with China 

The United States military has been quietly soliciting applications for Canadian mining projects that want American public funding through a major national security initiative. 

It's part of an increasingly urgent priority of the U.S. government: lessening dependence on China for critical minerals that are vital in everything from civilian goods such as electronics, cars and batteries, to weapons. 

It illustrates how Canadian mining is becoming the nexus of a colossal geopolitical struggle. Ottawa just pushed Chinese state-owned companies out of the sector, and the U.S. is now considering moving public funding in.

Zero Hedge: Blinken Calls Sabotage Attacks On Nord Stream Pipelines A "Tremendous Opportunity" 

Ever since the recent unprecedented sabotage attacks on the Russia to Europe Nord Stream pipelines, the central question has continued to remain who did it and correspondingly cui bono? 

Just when speculation and an avalanche of theories have inundated the web on an array of international outlets, the Biden administration has bluntly (and apparently lacking self-awareness) boasted that the pipeline bombings present an "opportunity". 

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a Friday joint press briefing with Canada's top diplomat that the damage and disruption to the pipelines are being seen in Washington as a "tremendous opportunity" to greatly reduce European energy imports on Russia.

WNU Editor: The Nord Stream pipelines took Russia years to build at a cost above $10 billion, but done so with the expectation that over it life time would generate almost a trillion in revenues to the Russian state while providing Germany a safe, affordable, and secure supply of energy. 

A win-win for both Germany and Russia if there ever was one.

That is why the current Western narrative of blaming Russia for destroying its own project is infuriating most if not all Russians. Doubly so when most Russians are convinced that it was the US who carried out this attack. 

And now US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is publicly gloating that Germany will need to purchase its energy from alternative sources, albeit at an extraordinary high price and with no guarantee of a stable supply.

I thought I would never see the day of the U.S. opening saying the suffering of one of its major allies is an opportunity. In the past the US wanted its allies to be as strong as possible because they understand mutual prosperity would benefit everyone while enhancing security. No more now.

President Joe Biden's administration has urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government to use its federal powers to end the Freedom Convoy demonstrations blockading key border crossings to protest Canada's COVID-19 restrictions. 

On Friday the blockade halting traffic at the Ambassador Bridge crossing connecting Windsor, Ontario to Detroit entered its fifth day, disrupting the flow products between the two countries and threatening to shut down production at several US auto plants. 

The bridge, which connects Windsor, Ontario with Detroit, Michigan, is North America's busiest international land border and usually carries more than $327million of goods per day on over 8,000 trucks, accommodating 27 percent of the approximately $400 billion in annual trade between Canada and the US.

In-Person Summit Planned For Biden-Trudeau-Obrador In Washington DC Next Week

OTTAWA/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -U.S. President Joe Biden is planning to host an in-person meeting with the leaders of Mexico and Canada on Nov. 18, the first of its kind in more than five years, a source in Ottawa said on Tuesday. 

Three other people familiar with the matter had said final details were still being worked out but if the meeting goes ahead it would most likely be some time next week in Washington. 

Sources based in Ottawa and Mexico City requested anonymity because the plans were not yet public.

White House deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed the administration is considering shutting down a Michigan oil pipeline, as President Biden finds himself caught between an environmental promise and looming gas price hikes. 

The administration is exploring the possibility of terminating the Line 5 pipeline - which links Superior, Wisconsin, with Sarnia, Ontario - and gathering data to determine if shutting down the line will cause a surge in fuel pricing. 

'Yes, we are,' Jean-Pierre said, asked in a news briefing if the administration is 'studying' the impacts of a potential shutdown.

It is Michigan vs Canada over an oil pipeline. Michigan wants to shut down a Canadian pipeline that is connected to the state’s water. 

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ordered an energy company backed by the Canadian government to shut down its operations. Canada’s natural resources minister Seamus O’Regan Jr. says shutting down of the pipeline is a bad idea. 

Michigan is ordering a Canadian energy company to shut down its oil and gas pipeline as its final notice to comply, with the state’s governor saying one section specifically is too risky to keep operating and violates public trust. 

 Enbridge Energy is prepared to stand its ground and allow its pipeline, Line 5, to continue to operate, The Guardian reported.

WNU Editor: I live in Canada. The shutdown of this pipeline will be worse than what the US east coast is experiencing now with the shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline. And as for U.S. - Canada relations. Progressives alongside indigenous and environmental groups will be happy, but the hostility from the mass majority of Canadians will be off the charts. 

One more note. I have been told by a contact that I trust in Ottawa that the Biden administration has not responded to calls from the Canadian Prime Minister who wants to talk about this issue. That tells me that relations between Trudeau and Biden are not as good as their spin-masters like to tell us.

During a White House press briefing today, Jen Psaki was asked if Biden was considering sharing part of the U.S. COVID-19 vaccine supply with allies. "No," she replied. "The president has made clear that he is focused on ensuring that vaccines are accessible to every American. That is our focus," she added.

WNU Editor: A close friend of mine has a summer cottage in the Adirondacks in upper New York state. He has not been there all year. I know a number of Canadian "snowbirds" who travel to Florida each winter and stay at their condos. Not going to happen this year. And then there is me. I am one of those who enjoys making short trips to the States 2 or 3 times a year. Did not happen this year, and there is a very good chance that travel is going to be limited next year..
