CNBC: Houthi militias launch biggest attack to date on merchant vessels in Red Sea 

* U.S. Navy officials tell CNBC four warships from Operation Prosperity Guardian are engaged in the fighting * Approximately 50 merchant vessels are in the area of the attack 

* This is the largest attack to date launched by Iranian-backed Houthi militants against commercial shipping vessels 

U.S. and coalition forces under Operation Prosperity Guardian responded Tuesday in the Red Sea to what American officials said was the largest attack to date on merchant vessels by Iranian-backed Houthis. 

“We are aware of the reports of the incident in the Red Sea,” said a senior Defense Department official, who was granted anonymity in order to discuss an ongoing operation. 

Attacks have been reported in at least two locations: Southwest of Mokha, Yemen, and Hodeidah, Yemen.

Business Insider: US Navy admiral says ships in the Middle East are now facing a new challenge: Houthi drone boats packed with explosives 

* The Houthis on Thursday launched an explosive drone boat into key waters off the coast of Yemen. 

* A US Navy admiral said the drone detonated in international shipping lanes without causing harm. 

* It's the first time the rebels have done this since they started attacking ships in November. 

Houthi rebels have introduced a new and dangerous threat to commercial vessels, as well as US and allied warships, operating in key waterways off the coast of Yemen: drone boats packed with explosives. 

Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, who leads US Naval Forces Central Command, said the Houthis on Thursday deployed a one-way attack unmanned surface vessel, or USV, for the first time since the Iran-backed militants started attacking ships in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, and Gulf of Aden several weeks ago. 

The Houthis originally launched the USV from Yemen and it transited around 15 miles into international shipping lanes "with the intent to do harm," Cooper told reporters. But the drone eventually detonated without hitting any ships or causing any casualties.

Reuters: Yemen's Houthis say they 'targeted' container ship, no damage reported 

DUBAI (Reuters) -Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis said on Wednesday they had "targeted" a container ship bound for Israel, a day after the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the militant group had fired two anti-ship ballistic missiles in the southern Red Sea. 

The Houthis, who control much of Yemen including the capital, have since October attacked in the Red Sea commercial vessels they say have Israeli links or are sailing to Israel, in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Reuters: Malta-flagged container ship reported seeing 3 explosions towards its port quarter off Yemen 

CAIRO (Reuters) - British maritime security firm Ambrey said on Tuesday that a Malta-flagged container ship reported seeing three explosions towards its port quarter, 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Yemen's Mocha. 

The vessel master was heard over VHF, calling a coalition warship, the firm added. Ambrey said it understood that three missiles had been fired from the direction of Yemen's Taiz Governorate. 

A nearby vessel reported seeing a small boat, about 50 metres (160 feet) in length, and with two lights, within 1 mile (1.6 km) of the incident location soon afterwards, the firm added.

The Guardian: Missile hits Red Sea container ship, US destroyers shoot down two more 

Warships responded to call from Maersk Hangzhou when they came under fire from Houthi rebel-held part of Yemen, says US Central Command 

An American destroyer shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Yemen Saturday as it responded to a call for help from a container ship that was hit separately, the US Central Command (Centcom) said. 

Centcom said the US destroyers Gravely and Laboon responded to a request for assistance from the Maersk Hangzhou, a Singapore-flagged, Denmark-owned and operated container ship that reported being struck by a missile while transiting the Red Sea. 

While responding, missiles were launched toward the ships from territory controlled by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, Centcom said.

Oil giant BP has announced it is pausing all shipments of oil through the Red Sea after recent attacks on vessels by Houthi rebels. 

The firm blamed the "deteriorating security situation" in the region as Iran-backed Houthis target ships they believe are bound for Israel. 

Many freight firms have suspended journeys as the attacks continue. 

BP said it would keep its "precautionary pause under ongoing review" and monitor the region. 

Analysts suggested that if other large oil firms follow suit, oil prices could rise. 

Brent crude, the international benchmark foroil prices, increased to $78.44 per barrel.

US Central Command said a missile fired from a Yemeni area controlled by Iran-backed Houthi rebels struck a Norwegian-flagged tanker on Monday. 

A Houthi military spokesperson said the Iranian-backed rebels had targeted the tanker with a rocket after the crew refused to respond to its warning calls.

Yemen's Houthi movement said its navy had attacked two Israeli ships on Sunday, Unity Explorer and Number 9, with an armed drone and a naval missile 

The Pentagon said it was aware of reports regarding attacks on an American warship and commercial vessels in the Red Sea on Sunday, as Yemen's Houthi group claimed drone and missile attacks on two Israeli vessels in the area. 

"We're aware of reports regarding attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available," the Pentagon said.

Warzone/The Drive: Houthi Helicopter Raid On Ship In Red Sea Seen In New Video 

The video shows at least seven Houthi commandos leave a helicopter that landed on the Galaxy Leader then capture the bridge on Sunday. 

The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels on Monday released a video showing Sunday’s helicopter-borne raid on the Galaxy Leader, a Bahamian-flagged vehicle carrier transiting the Red Sea. The Houthis still hold the ship and its 25 crew members. A U.S. military official told The War Zone it is believed to be the first Houthi helicopter attack on a ship. 

The video opens with a view of a Houthi Mi-171Sh variant transport helicopter with what appear to be UB-32 rocket pods and a PKM light machine gun at the door flying toward the vessel. The helicopter - bearing the black, red, white and green Palestinian flag and the red, white and black Houthi flag - flies low over the ship stern to bow and then lands just long enough for at least seven armed Houthi fighters to jump out and board the Galaxy Leader before the helicopter flies off.

The visit displays progress in the Oman-mediated dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi rebels. 

Saudi and Omani delegations have held talks with Houthi officials in the Yemeni capital Sanaa as part of international efforts to find a settlement to Yemen’s nine-year conflict, Houthi-run media reported. 

The visit indicates progress in the Oman-mediated consultations between Riyadh and Sanaa, which run parallel to United Nations peace efforts.

France 24: Yemen's warring parties renew two-month truce: UN 

Dubai (AFP) – Yemen's warring parties have agreed to renew a two-month truce, the United Nations said Thursday, in an 11th-hour move on the day it was set to expire. 

"I would like to announce that the parties to the conflict have agreed to the United Nations' proposal to renew the current truce in Yemen for two additional months," the UN special envoy on Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said in a statement. 

"The extension of the truce comes into effect when the current truce period expires, today 2 June 2022 at 19:00 Yemen time (1600 GMT)."

Warzone/The Drive: Iranian-Backed Houthi Rebels Show Off Captured Saudi Weapons After Seizing Cargo Ship  

While Houthi rebels in Yemen have launched multiple attacks on ships over the years, actually seizing one is much rarer for the group. 

Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have released pictures and video footage of weapons, vehicles, small boats, and other military cargo onboard the landing craft-type cargo vessel Rwabee, which the group seized in the Red Sea overnight. 

Saudi Arabian officials said this ship, which is flagged in the United Arab Emirates, was bringing home materiel from a disused military hospital on the island of Socotra in the Arabian Sea. 

The imagery the Houthis have released shows around a dozen of military trucks of various types, including at least one U.S.-made Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) variant and a Humvee with a large dish typically associated with ground-based satellite communications terminals. 

There are also a pair of rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIB) and containers and crates with other items, such as AK-type rifles and magazines for those guns, body armor, and helmets.

Middle East Eye: Yemen: Saudi-led coalition kills 165 Houthi rebels as battle for Marib rages 

The coalition says it has killed at least 1,000 Houthi rebels during the past week of fighting for the oil-rich province 

The Saudi-led military coalition supporting Yemen's government said it has killed at least 165 Houthi rebels in strikes south of Marib during the past 24 hours, as the battle for the strategic city rages. 

The Sunday strikes "destroyed 10 military vehicles and killed more than 165" rebels in the Abdiya district, the coalition said in a statement cited by the official Saudi Press Agency. 

The coalition has said it has killed around 1,000 Iran-backed rebels in strikes in the area in the past week, making daily announcements of at least dozens of rebel deaths.

FSO Safer has been abandoned since 2017 and loss of its 1.1m barrels would destroy Yemen’s fishing stocks 

The impact of an oil spill in the Red Sea from a tanker that is rotting in the water could be far wider than anticipated, with 8 million people losing access to running water and Yemen’s Red Sea fishing stock destroyed within three weeks. 

Negotiations are under way to offload the estimated 1.1m barrels of crude oil that remains onboard the FSO Safer, which has been deteriorating by the month since it was abandoned in 2017. The vessel contains four times the amount of oil released by the Exxon Valdez in the Gulf of Alaska in 1989, and a spill is considered increasingly probable.

The National: Fighting rages in Yemen's oil rich Marib as Houthis surround city 

City is close to being surrounded by Houthi militias Scores of people were killed in fighting between pro-government forces and Iran-backed Houthi militias in Marib governorate in northern Yemen this week. 

"More than 120 Houthi rebels were killed in fierce clashes in the mountainous terrain between the districts of Harib and Al Jobah, southern Marib in the last couple of days" Mohammed Al Qardaie, a tribal leader fighting alongside the Yemen government, told The National on Tuesday. 

The ancient city of Marib is a vital transport hub in the country's rugged north and serves as a gateway to other government-held provinces.

France 24: Scores killed in fierce fighting over Yemen's strategic city of Marib 

Sixty-seven Yemeni rebels and pro-government troops have been killed as fighting intensifies for the key city of Marib, military and medical sources said Monday. 

A volley of air strikes from the Saudi-led coalition targeted the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who have stepped up their assault on the government's last northern stronghold. 

Hundreds of fighters have died this month after the Houthis renewed their campaign for the capital city of oil-rich Marib province. 

"Fifty-eight Huthi insurgents and nine loyalists were killed in fighting and air strikes in the provinces of Marib and Shabwa in the past 24 hours," military sources told AFP, in figures that were confirmed by medical sources. 

The rebels rarely announce their casualties.

The head of the UN food agency is warning that 16 million people in Yemen “are marching towards starvation”, adding that food rations for millions in the war-torn nation will be cut in October unless new funding arrives. 

David Beasley said on Wednesday at a high-level meeting on Yemen’s humanitarian crisis that the United States, Germany, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and other donors stepped up when the World Food Programme (WFP) was running out of money earlier this year and “because of that we averted famine and catastrophe”.
