CNN: China claims successful anti-ballistic missile interceptor test

Seoul, South Korea (CNN)China successfully conducted an anti-ballistic missile test on Sunday night, according to the country's Defense Ministry, part of ongoing military efforts to enhance the country's defensive capabilities.

It was a land-based mid-course missile tested within China's borders, the ministry said in a brief statement, adding the test was defensive in nature and not targeted against any country.

Anti-ballistic missile systems are meant to shield a country from potential attacks by using projectiles to intercept incoming missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

Some analysts liken it to shooting down a bullet with another bullet.

DoD Buzz: Navy Destroys Ballistic Missile Target in Successful Interceptor Test

U.S. sailors aboard the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer John Finn destroyed a target Friday with the latest version of the Standard Missile-3 interceptor during a flight test off the coast of Hawaii.

The ship launched the SM-3 Block IIA guided missile, which then successfully intercepted a medium-range ballistic missile target deployed from the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Kauai, Hawaii, according to a U.S. Missile Defense Agency press release.

Latest U.S. Navy Ballistic Missile Intercept Test Has Failed

Defense News: Another US Navy ballistic missile intercept reportedly fails in Hawaii

WASHINGTON — A test shoot of the SM-3 Block IIA fired from an Aegis Ashore test site in Hawaii failed Wednesday, CNN has reported. The missile is designed to intercept ballistic missiles.

If confirmed, it would mark the second unsuccessful test of the Raytheon missile in the past year. It also deals a setback to U.S. missile defense efforts as North Korea makes seemingly daily progress on it goal of striking the U.S. mainland with nuclear-armed missiles.

When reached for comment, U.S. Missile Defense Agency spokesman Mark Wright declined to comment on the outcome of the test.

“The Missile Defense Agency and U.S. Navy sailors manning the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense Test Complex (AAMDTC) conducted a live-fire missile flight test using a Standard-Missile (SM)-3 Block IIA missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, Hawaii, Wednesday morning,” Wright said.

Latest U.S. Navy Ballistic Missile Intercept Test Fails Off The Coast Of Hawaii

A Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA is launched in February from the guided-missile destroyer USS John Paul Jones during a flight test off Hawaii resulting in the first intercept of a ballistic missile target by the Block IIA, which is being developed jointly by the US and Japan

Defense News: US Navy ballistic missile intercept test fails

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Navy conducted a failed ballistic missile intercept Wednesday with its SM-3 Block IIA off the coast of Hawaii.

The destroyer John Paul Jones, running the Navy’s top-of-the-line Aegis Baseline 9.C2 combat system, failed to intercept a medium-range ballistic missile launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Kauai, Hawaii.

The destroyer detected and tracked the target on the AN/SPY-1 phased array radar but was unable to intercept it. It was the second test of this latest iteration of the SM-3. The John Paul Jones successfully shot down a target in February with it. That test was the first intercept using Baseline 9.2C.

Japanese Ship Brings Down Missile Target -- Global Security Newswire

In a joint drill with the U.S. Navy, a Japanese destroyer today brought down a ballistic missile launched from Hawaii, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, Sept. 17).

The medium-range target was fired from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on the island of Kauai. The JDS Myoko identified and monitored the missile and then stopped its trajectory with a Standard Missile 3 interceptor fired from the vessel's deck. The test missile was intercepted approximately 100 miles above the Pacific Ocean, according to a statement from the two nations' militaries.

U.S., Israel Abort Missile Test

A 2005 photo shows the launch of an Arrow missile in Israel. A test of a missile-defense shield being developed by the U.S. and Israel was aborted this week. Associated Press

From The Wall Street Journal:

TEL AVIV -- Israeli and U.S. military officials this week aborted a test of a missile-defense shield under development by the two countries, raising questions about the reliability of Israel's defenses against a potential Iranian attack.

The news, which military officials were careful not to characterize as a failure of the Israeli missile-defense program, comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East over the strengthening of Iranian hawks loyal to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Military Shoots Down Missile In Test Off Hawaii

From Breitbart:

HONOLULU (AP) - The U.S. military says it has intercepted a ballistic missile near Hawaii in a test.

The sea-based test Thursday was the military's first since an errant satellite was shot down earlier this year.

A target was fired from a decomissioned amphibious assault ship about 100 miles off the island of Kauai. It was a Scud-like missile with a range of a few hundred miles.

The USS Lake Erie fired two interceptor missiles at the target. It was shot down in its final seconds of flight about 12 miles above the Pacific Ocean.

The Lake Erie is a Navy cruiser based at Pearl Harbor. In February, the ship shot down a U.S. spy satellite in the Aegis defense program's first real-world mission.

My Comment: They are getting better at this. It was a short range test, but still .... I am repeating myself .... they are getting better at this.
