National Grid Collapses In Bangladesh. 130 Million Have No Power

Reuters: Bangladesh plunged into darkness by national grid failure

* Power grid collapse leads to blackouts in 75-80% Bangladesh

* Authorities working to restore power, investigating cause

* Government had rationed some gas due to high global prices

DHAKA, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Large swathes of Bangladesh were left without electricity on Tuesday after a grid failure, a government official said, adding that authorities were working to gradually restore power supply in the country of 168 million people.

The country's power grid malfunctioned at around 2 p.m. (0800 GMT) on Tuesday, leading to blackouts across 75-80% of the Bangladesh, Bangladesh Power Development Board official Shameem Hasan told Reuters.

An investigation was underway to ascertain the reason for the grid's collapse and power had been restored in 45% of the regions hit by the blackouts, he said. By nightfall, it was still not clear when power would be fully restored.

WNU Editor: As of this posting, the power is still off for more than half of the country. As to what caused the grid collapse. Much of the country's power-grid uses natural gas, and with sky-high prices there has been cutbacks. It looks like the cutbacks were just too much for the grid.

Bangladesh has executed the Islamist leader Abdul Kader Mullah, convicted of atrocities in the 1971 war of independence with Pakistan.

He is the first person convicted by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to be executed.

The ICT was set up in 2010 to investigate abuses committed during the 1971 conflict, in which some estimate three million people were killed.

Mullah was a senior leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party.

His trial earlier in the year sparked protests from Jamaat supporters.

152 Bangladeshis Sentenced To Death Over 2009 Border Guard Mutiny -- The Guardian

Human rights groups criticise Dhaka court for mass trial of 846 defendants over deaths of 74 people in military revolt

A court in Bangladesh has sentenced 152 people to death for their actions in a 2009 border guard mutiny in which 74 people, including 57 military commanders, were killed.

Dhaka's metropolitan sessions court judge Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman also sentenced 157 others, mostly border guards, to life in prison while 271 people were acquitted. The extensive case involves 846 accused, and the verdicts are still being announced.

The mutiny on 25-26 February 2009 took place two months after the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, took office. The military was unhappy over the response of the government, which did not allow troops to attack the border guards' headquarters in Dhaka where military commanders were killed.

Violent Protests In Bangladesh Continue

Death Toll From Bangladesh Unrest Reaches 44 -- New York Times

DHAKA, Bangladesh — The death toll from violent clashes between protesters and security forces in Bangladesh reached at least 44 on Friday, one day after a special war crimes tribunal handed down a death sentence to an Islamic leader for crimes against humanity committed 42 years ago, during the country’s 1971 war of independence from Pakistan.

The verdict against Islamic leader, Delawar Hossain Sayedee, a leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, an Islamist party, resonated across the country. It was celebrated by the hundreds of thousands of young protesters who have taken to the streets in recent weeks to condemn Jamaat and demand justice in the war crimes cases against other party leaders, insisting that those who were convicted be hanged.

“This verdict is a victory for the people,” declared Imran H. Sarkar, a blogger and an organizer of the protests, during a rally on Thursday afternoon.

Bangladesh Islamist's Death Sentence Sparks Deadly Riots -- Reuters

(Reuters) - A Bangladeshi Islamist party leader was sentenced to death on Thursday over abuses carried out during the country's independence war, triggering riots that killed at least 30 people.

Delwar Hossain Sayedee, 73, vice-president of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was found guilty by Bangladesh's war crimes tribunal of mass killing, rape, arson, looting and forcing minority Hindus to convert to Islam during the 1971 war of separation from Pakistan, lawyers and tribunal officials said.

After he was convicted and sentenced, police clashed with activists from Sayedee's party and violence raged in more than a dozen areas around the country, police, witnesses and media reports said.

At least three policemen were among the dead and around 300 were wounded, they added.

Protests Continue In Bangladesh Over Past War Crimes. Islamists Warn Of Civil War

Bangladesh Tense Amid War Crime Protests -- Al Jazeera

Protester killed during strike after government amends law to allow retrial of politicians charged with war crimes.

Bangladesh continues to face political and social unrest over trial of opposition Jamaat-e-Islami leaders accused of involvement in murder and other atrocities during country's liberation war in 1971.

Police on Monday shot dead a protester in demonstrations in eastern Bangladesh amid a nationwide strike called by the Jamaat-e-Islami party.

Authorities kept schools and colleges open and many businesses reopened on Monday.

Jamaat, the country's largest Islamic party, called the strike to protest against the death last Friday of four of its activists in police shooting in the southeastern city of Cox's Bazaar.

At least 14 people have been killed so far during protests against government trials of Jamaat leaders.

A Landmark Moment in Bangladesh's Slow Crawl Toward Justice -- Time

In Dhaka, a war crimes tribunal charged its first suspect on some 20 counts, including crimes against humanity. Delwar Hossain Sayedee, a leading figure in the Jamaat-e-Islami, the country's most important Islamist party, will now go to court Oct. 30. If you haven't heard of the case, it's not your fault — the 1971 genocide in Bangladesh is perhaps the least discussed mass slaughter in the history of the 20th century. According to some accounts, up to 3 million people were killed and hundred of thousands of women were raped in a nine-month orgy of violence as Pakistani soldiers and loyalists to Islamabad tried to quell the rebellion that eventually led to East Pakistan splintering off into the independent state of Bangladesh.

Dozens Hurt As Bangladesh's Khaleda Zia Evicted -- BBC

Dozens of people have been injured in clashes between police and protesters in Bangladesh.

The protests were sparked by the eviction of opposition leader Khaleda Zia from the home she has lived in for some 30 years.

Meanwhile at least three people were killed in an apparent suicide bombing at the house of a ruling party MP in western Bangladesh.

Police have not said whether they think the protests and bombing are linked.

The High Court had given Ms Zia, the leader of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, until Friday to leave her house, inside a military compound in Dhaka.

The residence has been leased to her since 1982 but the government cancelled it last year, claiming it was illegal.

Bangladesh Charges 824 People Over Deadly Mutiny -- BBC

Prosecutors in Bangladesh have charged 824 people with the killing of dozens of army officers during last year's mutiny at barracks in Dhaka.

Most of the accused were members of a paramilitary border force who rebelled over pay and conditions.

All of the suspects could face the death penalty if found guilty.

Officials say that 74 people, most of them senior army officers, were killed during the two-day rebellion in the capital in February 2009.

The violence had also spread nationwide and Bangladesh appeared to be on the brink of civil war.

Bangladesh Is 'Safe Haven For British Islamic Terrorists'

From The Independent:

Increasing surveillance in Pakistan has prompted fundamentalists to seek new hideaways for training

Security experts have warned that extremists training in Bangladesh could pose a major threat to Britain, adding that the south-Asian country has become a "safe haven" for terrorists.

Rising numbers of British-born fundamentalists are travelling to Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) for jihadist training, prompting the Bangladeshi government to launch a database to monitor the movements of suspected terrorists.

After The Mutiny, Questions About Bangladesh's Army

The bodies of Bangladesh Rifles officials are recovered from a mass graveyard inside the Bangladesh Rifles headquarters in Dhaka. Andrew Biraj / Reuters

From Time Magazine:

Bangladesh is still reeling following the discovery of mass graves and evidence of cold-blooded execution of army officers who were killed amid last week's mutiny at the headquarters of the nation's paramilitary border security force, the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR). The body of Lt. Col. Golam Kibria was found floating through a sluice gate in a nearby sewer Monday morning, bringing the death toll to 74, with 70 more BDR commanding officers who were present at the headquarters when the mutiny occurred still missing and presumed dead. The mutineers initially raised demands related to their pay and conditions of service, but the extent of the carnage now appears to raise concerns about the depths of the anger that led to the uprising.
