Zimbabwe Denounces Botswana 'Interference'

HARARE (AFP) — Authorities in Harare accused neighbouring Botswana of meddling in its affairs Wednesday after President Ian Khama called for a rerun of Zimbabwe's disputed elections under international supervision.

"The statement he has made to his country is an act of extreme provocation to Zimbabwe," Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa said in comments carried by state media.

West Suffers Historic Defeat As China And Russia Veto Zimbabwe Sanctions

Britain’s diplomatic strategy in Zimbabwe collapsed last night in an historic defeat for the West in the UN Security Council that will have repercussions across Africa and beyond.

Russia and China wielded their veto to kill a resolution imposing UN sanctions on President Mugabe and his inner circle in a defining vote in the 15-nation council.

Sir John Sawers, the British Ambassador to the UN, said: “The people of Zimbabwe need to be given hope that there is an end in sight to their suffering. The Security Council today has failed to offer them that hope.”

Botswana Troops Mass On Zimbabwe Border

Botswana has deployed units of its army along its border with Zimbabwe as "a precaution" against trouble in its crisis-torn neighbour spilling into the country, sources close to the government have said.

Relations between the two countries have become strained by the influx in recent years of tens of thousands of refugees from Zimbabwe who have crossed the border illegally, fleeing the violence of Robert Mugabe's supporters.
