SCMP: China claims another success in midcourse ballistic missile interception test 

* Test carried out within country's territory is sixth success of its kind and 'accomplished its objectives', defence ministry says 

* China needs to carry out repeated tests to improve technology and be able to hit multi-warhead targets, expert observes 

China successfully tested a ground-based midcourse ballistic missile interception, the defence ministry announced on Friday. 

The result brought the number of such missile interceptions to at least six. 

Friday's test took place within Chinese territory and space and "accomplished its objectives", according to a statement from the ministry. 

"This test is defensive in nature and it does not target any particular country," the statement added, without elaborating.

Channel News Asia: China says carries out another anti-missile test

BEIJING: China has successfully carried out another test of an anti-missile intercept system, the Defence Ministry said on Tuesday, describing it as defensive and not aimed at any country.

China has been ramping up research into all sorts of missiles, from those which can destroy satellites in space to advanced nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles, as part of an ambitious modernisation scheme overseen by President Xi Jinping.

The Defence Ministry said in a brief statement the "ground-based midcourse anti-missile intercept technology" had been tested on Monday within China's borders.

"The test reached its expected goals," the ministry said. "This test was defensive and not aimed at any country."

It provided no other details.

He took these breath-taking photos during a flight from Hong Kong to Baku in Azerbaijan on Sunday on an airway heading over the Himalayas.

Reuters: China says pressing ahead with own anti-missile system

China's Defence Ministry confirmed on Thursday that it was pressing ahead with anti-missile system tests after pictures appeared on state television, amid anger at South Korea's decision to deploy an advanced U.S. anti-missile system.

An announcement by South Korea and the United States this month that they would deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) unit has drawn protests from China, which warned that the system would destabilize regional security.

The decision by the United States and South Korea is the latest move to squeeze increasingly isolated North Korea, but China worries the system's radar will be able to track its military capabilities. Russia also opposes the deployment.

Pictures broadcast this week on Chinese television were the third time since 2010 that China has publicly indicated tests of its own anti-missile system, state media said.

China Carries Out Anti-Missile Test -- Reuters

(Reuters) - China tested emerging military technology aimed at destroying missiles in mid-air after an initial test in 2010, state media said on Sunday, in a move that will unnerve its neighbors.

A brief report by the official Xinhua news agency said the military carried out a "land-based mid-course missile interception test within its territory".

"The test has reached the pre-set goal," the report quoted an unnamed Defence Ministry official as saying. "The test is defensive in nature and targets no other country."

It did not specify whether any missile or object had been destroyed in the test.

"Although no other detailed information about the test was released from the military authorities, weapon system experts said such a test could build shield for China's air defenses by intercepting incoming warheads such as ballistic missiles in space," the report added.

The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson made slightly more detailed comments, including noting that “The test would neither produce space debris in orbit nor pose a threat to the safety of orbiting spacecraft.”

BEIJING (AP) -- China announced that its military intercepted a missile in mid-flight Monday in a test of new technology that comes amid heightened tensions over Taiwan and increased willingness by the Asian giant to show off its advanced military capabilities.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported late Monday that ''ground-based midcourse missile interception technology'' was tested within Chinese territory.

''The test has achieved the expected objective,'' the three-sentence report said. ''The test is defensive in nature and is not targeted at any country.''
