Thwaites glacier is losing ice at an accelerating rate, threatening catastrophic sea-level rise
Many climate scientists regard Thwaites glacier in West Antarctica as one of the most vulnerable and most significant glaciers in the world in terms of future global sea-level rise.
Its collapse would raise global sea levels by more than half a metre on its own, and subsequently release other major bodies of ice in West Antarctica, which together could raise sea levels by 2-3 metres. The ramifications for many countries, including most of the world’s coastal cities, would be catastrophic.
For this reason, Thwaites is known as Antarctica’s “Doomsday glacier”.
Earlier this year a team of scientists observed, for the first time, the presence of warm water at a vital point underneath the glacier, which helps explain the reason behind the extent of its decrease.
‘At some point these chronic realities do reach a breaking point’.
The world is going to end in 12 years unless the government takes action, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said Monday at a Martin Luther King forum in New York City.
Here’s an excerpt from her interview with Ta-Nehisi Coates:
“And I think the part of it that is generational is that millennials and people, in Gen Z, and all these folks that come after us are looking up and we’re like, the world is gonna end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change. You’re biggest issue, your biggest issue is how are going to pay for it? — and like this is the war, this is our World War II. And I think for younger people looking at this are more like, how are we saying let’s take it easy when 3,000 Americans died last year, how are we saying let’s take it easy when the end person died from our cruel and unjust criminal justice system?

WNU Editor: The amount of positive attention that the main stream media has focused on this new Congresswomen is incredible. As to global warming and the destruction of the earth, I have been hearing this for decades .... U.N. Predicts Disaster if Global Warming Not Checked (June 29, 1989. AP).
Pentagon Says Global Warming Presents Immediate Security Threat -- New York Times
WASHINGTON — The Pentagon released a report Monday asserting decisively that climate change poses an immediate threat to national security, with increased risks from terrorism, infectious disease, global poverty and food shortages. It also predicted rising demand for military disaster response as extreme weather creates more global humanitarian crises.
The report lays out a road map for how the military will adapt to rising sea levels, more violent storms and widespread droughts. The Defense Department will begin by integrating plans for climate change risks across all of its operations, from war games and strategic defense planning situations to a rethinking of the movement of supplies.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, speaking Monday at a summit meeting of defense ministers in Peru, highlighted the report’s findings and the global security threats of climate change.
Climate Change Compounds Global Security Threat, British Admiral Says -- CNN
Stresses from global climate change are increasing the threat of wars around the world, a British admiral saidhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif Wednesday.
Royal Navy Rear Adm. Neil Morisetti told students and faculty at Georgia Institute of Technology that global climate change threats to food, water, land and energy will present substantive security challenges in regions of the world where there are already stresses.
"Those climate stress multipliers are increasing the threat of armed conflict around the world," Morisetti said.
My Comment: Rear Adm. Neil Morisetti has been pushing the thesis of climate change and its impact on security issues for a long time. For more info on his work, check this link.
Forum Says Climate Shift Brings Deaths -- New York Times
Global warming is causing more than 300,000 deaths and about $125 billion in economic losses each year, according to a report by the Global Humanitarian Forum, an organization led by Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary general.
The report, to be released Friday, sifted data sets and existing studies of health, disaster, population and economic trends. It found that human-influenced climate change — mainly by exacerbating flooding and drought — was elevating the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition, diarrheal disease, malaria and heat-related ailments. But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions.
Special Note from the WNU Editor: In the 1980s I worked for Environment Canada in gathering information on the impact of acid rain on Canadian forests. I have "some" experience and expertise on environmental issues. I also worked for the UN from 1988 to 1994 ... so I have some idea on how they work.
My Comment: For this UN report .... the authors emphasize on the suffering that is occurring in the poor countries .... not the developed countries. Hmmmm .... you think there is a link.
Of course the report ignores the impact of rotten and corrupt politics/governments, tribalism and ethnic warfare, and a culture of anti-capitalism mixed with a culture of environmental destruction and a pro-socialist slant for government intervention and control. Oh no .... these situations have no impact at all.
I have already read the executive summary, and this report is an embarrassment to anyone who takes man made climate change and pollution seriously. I am sure that when I look at the methodology of how this report was brought about .... more embarrassment and ridicule will be found. The fact that 20 Nobel Laureates signed on to this travesty makes one realize that these individuals may be brilliant in their field .... but global warming they are not.
300,000 dying each year .... and to solve this there must be a massive transfer of resources from developed countries to underdeveloped countries .... all of course administered by the UN and the authors of this report.

Kyoto Redux: Clinton Vows to Use Cabinet Position to Push for Climate Treaty -- Business Media Institute
Secretary of State nominee and Senate Foreign Relations Chair both call global warming a 'security threat.'
Change we can all believe in? How about the same song and dance, but just a different day?
In opening remarks at her confirmation hearing on Jan. 13, President-elect Barack Obama’s Secretary of State designate Hillary Clinton told the Senate Foreign Relations committee she would use the office to shape foreign policy that would fight climate change
“You Mr. Chairman [Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.] were among the very first in a growing chorus from both parties to recognize that climate change is an unambiguous security threat,” Clinton said. “At the extreme it threatens our very existence. But well before that point, it could well incite new wars of an old kind over basic resources – like food, water and arable land.”

WASHINGTON - A new US military report has come under scrutiny for asserting that the scientific data on what is causing global warming is "contradictory" - a position one leading specialist said indicates the government still hasn't fully embraced the urgency of climate change.
The long-range planning document, published Thursday by the US Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., which is responsible for developing blueprints for future military strategy, is intended to provide a "basis for thinking about the world a quarter of a century from now."

(WASHINGTON) — Global warming is likely to increase illegal immigration, create humanitarian disasters and destabilize precarious governments in political hot spots, all of which could affect U.S. national security, according to an assessment by U.S. intelligence agencies.
Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Central and Southeast Asia are most vulnerable to warming-related drought, flooding, extreme weather and hunger. The intelligence assessment warns of the global impact from the spillover: increased migration and "water-related disputes," according to prepared remarks by Tom Fingar, deputy director of national intelligence for analysis, who was scheduled to speak before a joint House committee hearing. "We judge that the most significant impact for the United States will be indirect and result from climate-driven effects on many other countries and their potential to seriously affect U.S. national security interests," Fingar stated.
