France 24: West African regional bloc suspends Guinea's membership after military coup 

West Africa's main political and economic bloc suspended Guinea's membership on Wednesday following a weekend military coup that ousted President Alpha Condé and dealt the latest in a flurry of setbacks to democracy in the region. 

 During a virtual summit, leaders from the 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) demanded a return to the constitutional order and Condé's immediate release, and also agreed to send a high-level mission to Guinea as soon as Thursday, said Burkina Faso's Foreign Minister Alpha Barry.

France 24: Guinea's opposition leader says he's open to transition following military coup 

Guinea's main opposition leader said on Tuesday he was open to participating in a transition following a military coup over the weekend, as the soldiers who seized power consolidated their takeover. 

West African countries have threatened sanctions following the overthrow of President Alpha Condé, who was serving a third term after altering the constitution to permit it. 

His opponents said the change was illegal and frustration boiled over into deadly protests last year. 

Eighty political prisoners detained by Conde's government, including a number who had campaigned against his third term, were released on Tuesday evening, said Hamidou Barry of the Guinean Organisation of Human Rights.

The Guardian: Guinea president held in military detention, say army coup leaders 

International community condemns takeover but many in impoverished west African country welcome it 

Guinea’s president, Alpha Condé, is being held in military detention, according to an elite unit of the army who have led a coup condemned by the international community but welcomed by many in Guinea. 

The coup leader and head of the country’s special forces, Col Mamadi Doumbouya, announced in state broadcasts on Sunday that the country’s constitution had been suspended, the government dissolved and the borders closed, with a 24-hour curfew imposed.

A Guinean army colonel has gone on state television to say that President Alpha Conde's government has been dissolved along with the constitution in a coup. 

Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya sat, draped in a Guinean flag with other soldiers by him, as he read a statement Sunday on the uprising on state television, vowing: 'The duty of a soldier is to save the country.' 

The group call themselves the National Committee of Gathering and Development vowed to restore democracy and also ordered the closure of the country's borders.

The Guardian: Guinea’s president wins third term amid widespread protests 

Opposition supporters take to streets as electoral commission says Alpha Condé won almost 60% of vote 

Guinea’s president, Alpha Condé, has won a controversial third term with 59.49% of the vote, the National Independent Electoral Commission declared on Saturday. 

His victory came amid widespread protests that were violently suppressed by security forces. Some people went on to the streets to protest immediately after the announcement.

Such demonstrations have occurred for months after the government changed the constitution through a national referendum, allowing Condé to extend his decade in power. 

Opposition candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo received 33.50% of the vote, the electoral commission said. Voter turnout was almost 80%.

France 24: Guinea opposition candidate claims victory before official results 

Guinea opposition candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo said on Monday he had won the first round of the Oct. 18 presidential election, but his claim was quickly disputed by the electoral commission and the government, setting the stage for a stand-off. 

"Despite the serious anomalies that marred the smooth running of the ... election and in view of the results that came out of the ballot boxes, I am victorious in this election in the first round," Diallo told journalists and cheering supporters. 

He did not give any figures but said the tally was based on his party's count, not an official tally being conducted by the national election commission, which has yet to publish results. The electoral commission said Diallo's claim carried no weight.

Al Jazeera: President Conde seeks third term as Guinea goes to the polls 

Almost 5.5 million registered to take part in the election expected to be a tight race between Conde and opposition leader Diallo. 

Voters in Guinea have been casting their ballots in a high-stakes presidential poll taking place after months of bloody unrest. 

Almost 5.5 million registered voters can vote on Sunday at roughly 15,000 polling stations. 

Results are expected within 24 hours after voting closes at 6pm local time (18:00 GMT). 

A candidate needs to secure more than 50 per cent of the vote to win. 

Twelve candidates are vying for the highest office, but only the incumbent, Alpha Conde, and Cellou Dalein Diallo, the leader of main opposition party Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG), are said to be in with a chance of victory.

Guinea faces an Ebola epidemic on an unprecedented scale as it battles to contain confirmed cases now scattered across several locations that are far apart, the medical charity Médecins sans Frontières said.

The warning from an organisation used to tackling Ebola in central Africa came after Guinea's president appealed for calm as the number of deaths linked to an outbreak on the border with Liberia and Sierra Leone passed 80.

The outbreak of one of the world's most lethal infectious diseases has alarmed a number of governments with weak health systems, prompting Senegal to close its border with Guinea and other neighbours to restrict travel and cross-border exchanges.

CONAKRY — Three days of ethnic violence in Guinea last week left 98 people dead, nearly double the previous death toll, the government said on Wednesday.

The violence erupted on July 14 after a man accused of being a thief was lynched. It took place during tense preparations for long-delayed elections meant to restore civilian rule after a 2008 military coup.

"We are today at around 100 dead — 76 victims in [Guinea's second largest city] Nzerekore and 22 others in Koule," government spokesman Damantang Albert Camara said.

Hours before the Guinea election commission announced Alpha Conde as the nation's first democratically elected president in a half-century, rival candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo proclaimed himself winner.

Euphoria over the announcement that Alpha Conde is Guinea’s first democratically elected president melted into apprehension as rival candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo also proclaimed himself winner – setting the stage for a tense showdown in the days ahead.

Mr. Conde won the Nov. 7 runoff election with 52.52 percent of the vote to Mr. Diallo's 47.48 percent, according to final results released late Monday night by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). Pre-election violence saw numerous car and store windows smashed with rocks, resulting in clashes with the military that claimed the lives of at least three residents, in addition to another civilian reportedly killed Monday night.

Guinea Is Tense After Election Violence

Supporters of the defeated candidate in Guinea's presidential election, Cellou Dalein Diallo, have been protesting in the streets about the poll results.

The security forces have been firing tear gas in the capital and violence has been reported in some other areas.

Mr Diallo appealed for calm and said he would challenge the results in court.

Veteran opposition leader Alpha Conde, who won with more than 52% of the vote, said he wants to lead a process of national reconciliation.

The elections mark an end of 52 years of authoritarian rule, but since the first round in June, won by Mr Diallo - a former prime minister - the process has been marred by violence and delays.

According to the electoral commission, Mr Conde received 1.47 million votes in the country's 28 districts, against 1.3 million votes, or 47.5%, for Mr Diallo.

Riot police fought stone-throwing demonstrators in Guinea's capital, as it appears a long-time opposition leader has won last week's presidential election.

CONAKRY — The Guinean Social Movement (MSG) has addressed an open letter to interim president Sekouba Konate, asking him to describe the state of health of the junta leader, who was shot on December 3.

"Since December 4, date on which President Moussa Dadis Camara was evacuated to Morocco after an assassination bid (...) the Guinean people have received no reliable information on his state of health," the movement said in an open letter dated Tuesday.
