Press Association/Daily Mail: Hugo Chavez´s childhood home burned by anti-government protesters in Venezuela

Protesters have set late president Hugo Chavez’s childhood home in western Venezuela on fire, an opposition legislator said, as protests against the nation’s socialist government grew increasingly hostile.

Demonstrators lit the house – in the city of Barinas, where Mr Chavez spent his early years – aflame along with several government buildings, including the regional office of the National Electoral Council, said Pedro Luis Castillo, who represents the area.

The burnings capped a violent day in Barinas - known as the cradle of Mr Chavez’s socialist revolution - during which protesters clashed with national guardsmen, businesses were closed and roads blocked with fire-filled barricades.

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles condemned Mr Maduro's imminent inauguration as "fraudulent".

Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez died of a massive heart attack after great suffering and inaudibly mouthed his desire to live, the head of the country's presidential guard said.

Venezuela's Hugo Chavez Dies From Cancer -- Reuters

(Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has died after a two-year battle with cancer, ending the socialist leader's 14-year rule of the South American country, Vice President Nicolas Maduro said in a televised speech.

The flamboyant 58-year-old leader had undergone four operations in Cuba for a cancer that was first detected in his pelvic region in mid-2011. His last surgery was on December 11 and he had not been seen in public since.

"It's a moment of deep pain," Maduro, accompanied by senior ministers, said, his voice choking.

Chavez easily won a new 6-year term at an election in October and his death will devastate millions of supporters who adored his charismatic style, anti-U.S. rhetoric and oil-financed policies that brought subsidized food and free health clinics to long-neglected slums.

(Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's breathing problems have worsened and he is suffering from a "severe" new respiratory infection as he struggles to recover from cancer surgery, the government said in a somber update on Monday.

The 58-year-old socialist leader has not been seen in public nor heard from in almost three months since undergoing surgery in Cuba. It was his fourth operation since the disease was detected in mid-2011.

"Today there is a worsening of his respiratory function. Related to his depressed immune system, there is now a new, severe infection," Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said, reading the latest brief, official statement on his condition.

My Comment: My father (after his stroke) developed a similar condition. In his case he never recovered. Hugo Chavez is definitely very very sick. His convalescence is going to take a very long time ... or to put it bluntly .... even if he recovers he will not be the same person that everyone has gotten to know in the past few years.

He only returned home ten days ago following two months of treatment for cancer in Cuba.

Last week the government said that the 58-year-old was still suffering from a respiratory infection and that the outlook was not favorable.

Nicolas Maduro, Chavez's self-appointed successor, said on television that his boss 'is battling there for his health, for his life, and we're accompanying him.'

"The commander is fighting for his health, for his life," Nicolas Madura said on national TV Thursday.

The statement comes 10 days after Chavez returned to Venezuela from Cuba where he had received two months of treatment for his most recent bout with cancer. It was the clearest public indication to date of the severity of the president's condition.

Rumours Swirl As Chavez Stays Out Of Sight -- The Age

CARACAS: With President Hugo Chavez still out of sight, the Venezuelan government has denied any rift with the army as it led a rally in Caracas to mark the anniversary of a popular but deadly revolt.

Thousands of people clad in red rallied in the capital on Wednesday, many wearing shirts bearing the image of the leftist leader, and others holding signs reading "I am Chavez" as they marked the massacre of hundreds of people in 1989.

The rally came as Twitter lit up with speculation - none of it confirmed - that Mr Chavez had died. Thursday's rally was the first in Caracas since Mr Chavez, 58, checked into a military hospital in the capital nine days ago after spending two months in Cuba, where he underwent his fourth round of cancer surgery in 18 months.

El Comandante still suffers respiratory problems following cancer surgery in Cuba.

President Hugo Chávez, who returned to Venezuela Monday after undergoing medical treatment in Cuba, continues to suffer respiratory problems in his two-year battle with cancer, the Venezuelan government said in a somber statement Thursday.

"Respiratory inefficiencies that emerged in the post-operative period persist and his tendency hasn't been favorable," according to an official statement read on national TV by Information Minister Ernesto Villegas.

It was the first official communique on El Comandante's condition since his surprise return from at 2:30 a.m. local time on Monday.

My Comment: These images of Chavez remind me of my father after he had a stroke. He smiled in all of our pictures but his convalescence was incredibly difficult. I suspect that in the case of Hugo Chavez .... his personal struggle is just beginning.

(Reuters) - Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro said Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is getting "much better" as he recovers from cancer surgery almost two months ago in Havana, Communist Party newspaper Granma reported on Monday.

Castro, 86, spoke to reporters as he voted on Sunday in Cuba's parliamentary elections in one of his increasingly rare public appearances.

Recently re-elected president has undergone his fourth cancer-related surgery and his health is said to be 'delicate'.

Senior Venezuelan leaders have gathered in Cuba where Hugo Chávez is recovering from his fourth cancer-related surgery, amid growing speculation that the recently re-elected president will be unable to attend the 10 January inauguration of his fourth term in power.

Diosdado Cabello, the president of the National Assembly, and Chávez's brother Adan, a regional governor, joined the vice-president, Nicolas Maduro, in Havana where Chávez underwent surgery three weeks ago.

Maduro described Chávez's health as "delicate" after reporting on New Year's Eve that the oil-rich nation's leader had suffered a new complication from a respiratory infection.

My Comment: I have zero knowledge on what is the present health condition of Hugo Chavez .... but with more Venezuelan officials arriving in Cuba to be at the bedside of Venezuelan President Chavez, this is beginning to look more like a "death watch" than a trip to wish someone well.

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez is in an induced coma being kept alive by life support following complications during cancer surgery, it was claimed today.

Sources at the hospital in Cuba where he is being treated told a Spanish newspaper he was showing 'very weak' vital signs, adding that doctors could decide to switch off the machines 'at any moment'.

With rumours swirling that Chavez had taken a turn for the worse, Venezuela's Vice President Nicolas Maduro said the ailing president's condition remains 'delicate' three weeks after his cancer surgery.

My Comment: When someone has to have his fourth cancer operation .... all in a few years .... you do not have to be a rocket scientist to realize that his cancer has probably spread throughout his body and that it will only be a matter of time before his body succumbs to it. And while I do not know the specifics of President Chavez's situation .... I do know that time for him is running out, and it is only going to be a matter of time before he is gone.

Hugo Chávez has suffered "new complications" following his cancer surgery in Cuba, his vice president said, describing the Venezuelan leader's condition as delicate.

Vice president Nicolas Maduro delivered a solemn televised address from Havana, saying he had spoken with Chávez and that the president sent greetings to his homeland. Maduro did not give details about the complications, which he said came amid a respiratory infection.

"Several minutes ago we were with president Chávez. We greeted each other and he himself referred to these complications," Maduro said, reading from a prepared statement. Maduro was seated alongside Chávez's eldest daughter, Rosa, and son-in-law Jorge Arreaza, as well as attorney-general Cilia Flores.
