Police in China and South Africa have seized thousands of fake doses of Covid-19 vaccine 

Police in China and South Africa have seized thousands of fake doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, the global police organization Interpol said on Wednesday, warning this represented only the “tip of the iceberg” in vaccine-related crime. 

The Lyon-based agency Interpol said 400 vials – equivalent to around 2,400 doses – containing the fake vaccine were found at a warehouse in Germiston outside Johannesburg in South Africa, where officers also recovered fake masks and arrested three Chinese and a Zambian national.

In China, police successfully identified a network selling counterfeit Covid-19 vaccines in an investigation supported by Interpol, which has 194 member countries, it said.

(Bloomberg) -- Interpol delegates elected South Korean Kim Jong Yang as the new president of the global policing body after international criticism of the possibility that rival Russian candidate Aleksander Prokopchuk might get the job.

Kim was selected Wednesday morning in a snap election organized at Interpol’s general assembly in Dubai following the arrest in China of former president Meng Hongwei last month. Interpol didn’t disclose on its website the margin of victory for the South Korean in the election, which was organized on a one country-one vote basis.

The election had become deeply political in recent days as U.S. and other western countries warned that if elected, Prokopchuk, as a high-ranking police official in Russia, could abuse Interpol protocols to harass political opponents of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

ABC News Online: Missing Interpol chief Meng Hongwei under investigation, China's anti-corruption watchdog says

China's anti-corruption watchdog says it is investigating Meng Hongwei, who heads the global law enforcement organisation Interpol, for suspected violations of the law.

Mr Meng, 64, who is also Vice-Minister of Public Security in China, had been reported missing after travelling from France, where Interpol is based, to China.

"Public Security Ministry Vice-Minister Meng Hongwei is currently under investigation by the National Supervisory Commission for suspected violations of law," the Chinese anti-corruption body said in a brief statement on its website.

The Head of Interpol Is Missing In China

DW: Head of Interpol, Meng Hongwei, missing after China trip

French police are investigating the apparent disappearance of the head of Interpol. His wife reported him missing after a trip to China in late September.

French authorities have opened an investigation into the whereabouts of the head of Interpol, police sources told several news outlets on Friday.

Meng Hongwei, a Chinese national who was elected head of Interpol in 2016, traveled to China at the end of September and has not been heard from since, his wife told police.

Interpol told DW it was "aware of media reports in connection with the alleged disappearance of Interpol President Meng Hongwei."

(CNN) -- Interpol said Thursday it issued a red notice for Samantha Lewthwaite, the so-called "White Widow," at the request of Kenyan authorities.

Reports that a white woman was among the terrorists who stormed a mall in Nairobi last weekend have prompted a slew of media speculation about Lewthwaite, a British woman whose husband was one of the suicide bombers in the 2005 London terror attacks.

Known as the "White Widow," Lewthwaite, 29, has been wanted by international counterterrorism officials since authorities found bomb-making materials in her Mombasa, Kenya, apartment in 2011. She vanished shortly before a raid.

Interpol Issues Global Alert Over al-Qaida-Linked Prison Breakouts -- The Guardian

Police agency urges countries to show increased vigilance after hundreds of terrorists escaped over past nine months.

Interpol has issued a global security alert following a series of al-Qaida-linked prison breakouts in which hundreds of terrorists escaped.

The warning came a day after the US state department issued a worldwide travel warning to American citizens and closed 21 of its embassies over intelligence suggesting that the terrorist network was planning attacks during August. Britain is closing its embassy in Yemen for two days due to increased security concerns.

In a statement issued from its headquarters in Lyon, France, Interpol urged countries around the world to show "increased vigilance", following prison breakouts over the past month in nine countries, including Iraq, Libya and Pakistan.
