Israeli Forces Withdraw From West Bank City Of Jenin

Washington Post: Israel’s raid left Jenin in rubble. Netanyahu says it won’t be the last time.

JENIN REFUGEE CAMP — Israel ended Wednesday a two-day operation in the Jenin refugee camp that killed 12 Palestinians and an Israeli soldier, forced thousands from their homes, and created a new equation in the West Bank conflict for longer, deadlier reprisals to militant attacks.

The operation, the biggest in two decades, cleared Jenin camp of hundreds of explosives and weapons and confiscated hundreds of thousands of dollars in “terror funds,” according to Israel. But the scars on the camp were everywhere with churned asphalt and pulverized cars, windows and doors smashed in by military bulldozers. Cartridge shells and burned tires littered the streets, while water and power supplies were cut.

Warring Israel-Palestine Sides Indicate No Truce Is Imminent

Reuters: Israel, Islamic Jihad signal no near-term Gaza truce

GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel on Saturday ruled out an immediate truce in Gaza, saying the onus was on Palestinian militants to stop launching rockets from an arsenal it suggested could be depleted within days, while its aircraft kept up strikes in the enclave.

"We're not holding ceasefire talks," National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi told a municipal event near Jerusalem, adding that Israel's top priority was presently firing on militants.

Two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli raid on the outskirts of Nablus in the northern West Bank, where clashes had erupted, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. A military spokesman said gunmen exchanged fire with Israeli forces.

Israeli Forces And Palestinian Armed Groups Agree To Ceasefire After Death Of Palestinian Hunger Striker In Israeli Custody Sparks Fighting

France 24: Israel, Palestinian armed groups agree to ceasefire after hunger striker's death sparks fighting

A Palestinian hunger striker died in Israeli custody on Tuesday, sparking an exchange of fire between Israel and armed groups in Gaza, before three Palestinian officials said the sides had agreed to a ceasefire.

Earlier, Israeli jets struck in Gaza as armed groups there fired rocket barrages toward Israel in response to the death of Khader Adnan, a prominent political leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad faction, following an 87-day hunger strike in an Israeli prison.

Adnan, who was awaiting trial, was found unconscious in his cell and taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead after efforts to revive him, Israel's Prisons Service said. He was the first Palestinian hunger striker to die in Israeli custody in more than 30 years.

Gunman waited until Shabbat prayers ended before opening fire on people in worst terrorist attack on Israelis in years

Eight Israelis have been shot and killed as they left a synagogue in East Jerusalem, in the latest episode of spiralling violence across Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories over the past two days.

A gunman in a car waited on Friday night until Shabbat prayers ended at a synagogue in Neve Yaakov, a neighbourhood of Israeli settlers in occupied East Jerusalem, before opening fire on people as they left the building, a preliminary Israeli police probe said.

The attack came on International Holocaust Remembrance day.

Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

CNN: 'They were shooting directly at the journalists': New evidence suggests Shireen Abu Akleh was killed in targeted attack by Israeli forces

(CNN)Several shots ring out in quick succession, cutting through a clear, blue spring morning in Jenin, in the West Bank. Crack, crack, crack, crack, crack, crack, crack.

The cameraman filming the scene scrambles backwards to take cover behind a low concrete wall. Then a man cries out in Arabic: "Injured! Shireen, Shireen, oh man, Shireen! Ambulance!"

When the camera operator pans around the corner, Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh can be seen lying motionless, face down on the ground as another Palestinian reporter, Shatha Hanaysha, crouches down beside her, using a tree trunk for cover. Hanaysha reaches out and tries to rouse her as gunshots continue. There's no response. Both women are wearing helmets and blue protective vests marked "Press."

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Travels To The Mideast To Try And Revive The Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process

USA Today: Biden administration dampens expectations on Israeli-Palestinian peace process as Blinken visits Middle East

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Antony Blinken's priority as he begins his first trip to the Middle East will be ensuring that the Israel-Hamas ceasefire "sticks," not trying to revive the long dormant peace process, a senior State Department official said on Monday.

"We just we don't want to see a return to the bloodshed," the State Department official told reporters as Blinken prepared to leave for meetings in Israel, the West Bank, Egypt and Jordan.

The cease-fire, which went into effect on Friday, ended 11 days of deadly conflict that began May 10 when Hamas launched rockets into Israeli territory and Israel responded with a fusillade of missile strikes.

More than 230 Palestinians and 12 Israelis were killed.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Is Confident U.S. Will Allow West Bank Annexation In Two Months

Reuters: Netanyahu 'confident' U.S. will allow West Bank annexation in two months

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voiced confidence on Sunday that Washington would give Israel the nod within two months to move ahead with de facto annexation of parts of the occupied West Bank.

Palestinians have expressed outrage at Israel’s plans to cement its hold further on land it seized in the 1967 Middle East war, territory they are seeking for a state.

Netanyahu, in announcing a deal with his centrist rival Benny Gantz last week to form a unity government, set July 1 for the start of cabinet discussions on extending Israeli sovereignty to Jewish settlements in the West Bank and annexing outright the area’s Jordan Valley.

Such a move would need to be agreed with Washington, according to the Netanyahu-Gantz agreement.

Israel Strikes Palestinian Islamic Jihad Groups In Gaza and Syria

Daily Mail: Israel pounds targets around Damascus as it launches airstrikes against Islamic Jihad terrorists in Syria and the Gaza Strip

* Israel said warplanes launched strikes against Palestinian Islamic Jihad group
* Syria said its air defences confronted the strikes launched from Golan Heights
* Israel said it responded to rockets fired from the Gaza Strip Sunday morning
* It said the sites targeted in both Syria and Gaza were used for rocket making

Israel tonight pounded targets surrounding Damascus, prompting a volley of anti-aircraft fire in return, sending tremors through the Syrian capital.

In a rare acknowledgement of operations in neighbouring Syria, Israel said its warplanes attacked targets of the Palestinian militant Islamic Jihad group south of Damascus in addition to sites in the Gaza Strip.

Syria reported an Israeli attack near Damascus International Airport and said its air defences confronted Israeli rockets coming from the direction of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. It said the defenders intercepted or shot down most of them.

Residents said multiple explosions shook Damascus for about 15 minutes as air defences fired back.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians have demonstrated in Gaza to mark the anniversary of the start of weekly protests on the boundary with Israel.

Haaretz: Fourth Gaza Strike: Israel Goes on the Attack Against Palestinians Launching Burning Balloons

Air force targeted 'car of cell leader' in early morning hours, followed by group who allegedly sent burning kites into Israel, and additional group who sent incendiary balloons.

The Israeli army said Sunday evening that it struck a car used by a group of Palestinians who launched incindiery balloons from the southern Gaza Strip into Israel, the fourth such strike in a day. Reports in Gaza said Israel attacked a Hamas target east of the Al-Bureij refugee camp in the center of the coastal enclave. No casualties were reported.

Early Sunday, the military confirmed that it struck the vehicle of one of the leaders of the incendiary kites unit in Gaza. This was in response to a string of kites and balloons with explosives launched at Israel in recent days, the army said. Later, the army struck again, this time also targeting what the army called a cell launching balloons carrying explosive devices.
