Reuters: North Korea fires two missiles after U.S. submarine arrives in South Korea 

North Korea launched two ballistic missiles eastward early on Wednesday, Japan’s and South Korea’s militaries said, just hours after a U.S. ballistic missile submarine arrived in a South Korean port for the first time in four decades. 

Both of the missiles appeared to have fallen outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, the Japanese Defense Ministry said. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, or JCS, called on the North to cease such launches.

BBC: North Korea fires intercontinental ballistic missile after threatening US 

North Korea has fired a suspected intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Japanese and South Korean officials report. 

The long-range missile flew for more than an hour before landing short of Japanese waters on Wednesday morning. 

Pyongyang's launch comes after it threatened retaliation against what it said were recent US spy plane incursions over its territory. 

Earlier this week it threatened to shoot down such planes.

North Korea launched two missiles from a submarine in the waters of the Sea of Japan Sunday morning local time, according to the state-run news agency KCNA. 

The “strategic cruise missiles” were launched from a “8.24 Yongung” submarine, according to KCNA – the same vessel used to test North Korea’s first submarine-launched ballistic missile in 2016, CNN previously reported. 

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said earlier Sunday that North Korea fired at least one unidentified missile from a submarine near the port city of Sinpo in the South Hamgyong province. 

KCNA claimed the missiles flew for over an hour, traveling roughly 1,500 km (932 miles) per hour and performing figure-of-eight shaped patterns before “precisely” hitting a target.

North Korea test-fired four strategic cruise missiles during a drill designed to demonstrate its ability to conduct a nuclear counterattack against hostile forces, its state media said. 

The exercise on Thursday involved an apparently operational strategic cruise missile unit of the Korean people’s army, which fired the four Hwasal-2 missiles in the area of Kim Chaek city, North Hamgyong province, towards the sea off the east coast of the Korean peninsula, the news agency KCNA said. 

Other units conducted firepower training at hardened sites without live firing.

North Korea has launched a long-range ballistic missile into the sea off Japan's west coast after warning of a strong response to upcoming military drills by South Korea and the United States. 

Japanese authorities said the missile plunged into waters inside Japan's exclusive economic zone on Saturday more than an hour after it was launched, suggesting the weapon was one of Pyongyang's largest missiles. 

 Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kisihda said the missile appeared to have been an ICBM-class, referring to an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The launches are the latest in an unprecedented number of missile tests conducted by North Korea this year, as Pyongyang presses on with weapons development amid speculation it could test a nuclear weapon for a seventh time.

* Japan’s Vice Defence Minister Toshiro Ino said the North Korean-fired ballistic missiles seemed to have landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). 

* Ino said there had been no report of damage from the missiles so far. 

* It comes just days after the country tested a high-thrust solid-fuel engine that experts said would allow quicker and more mobile launch of ballistic missiles, as it seeks to develop a new strategic weapon and speed up its nuclear and missile programs. 

North Korea fired two ballistic missiles towards the sea off the Korean Peninsula’s east coast on Sunday, South Korea’s military said.

North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles from the Munchon area of Kangwon Province to the waters off the peninsula’s eastern coast, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff told reporters on Sunday. 

The missiles were launched between 1:47 a.m. and 1:53 a.m. local time Sunday, according to Japan’s State Minister of Defense Toshiro Ino. Both missiles fell outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone, Ino added. 

The first missile is estimated to have flown about 350 kilometers, or 217 miles, at a maximum altitude of approximately 100 kilometers, or 62 miles, according to Ino. The second traveled about the same distance.

Washington (CNN)North Korea has carried out its first weapons test since President Joe Biden took office, according to three US officials, launching two projectiles last weekend in a move senior administration officials downplayed as falling "on the low end of the spectrum" of provocative actions the regime could carry out. 

The test had been widely expected, as officials and experts have long anticipated that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would attempt to send a message to the Biden administration about the country's importance in the region. 

One US official told CNN that North Korea had launched short-range projectiles, possibly artillery or cruise missiles, not ballistic missiles -- a key distinction that underscores the Biden administration's view that it does not qualify as a serious breach and will not prevent the US from pursuing diplomacy with Pyongyang.

North Korea fired what appeared to be cruise missiles off its east coast and air-to-ground missiles from fighter jets into the East Sea on Tuesday, South Korea’s military said, in muscle-flexing maneuvers on the eve of the late national founder’s birthday and the South’s general elections.

The surface-to-ship cruise missiles were fired northeastward from areas near its eastern coastal town of Munchon at around 7 a.m. during a time period of more than 40 minutes, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said, adding they flew around 150 kilometers before splashing into waters off the east coast.

Along with the missile launches, the North also flew multiple Sukhoi-variant fighter jets above the eastern coastal city of Wonsan, and fired multiple anti-ground missiles into the East Sea, the JCS added.

North Korea on Sunday fired at least one 'unidentified projectile' into the sea off its east coast, the Yonhap news agency reported, citing the South's military joint chiefs of staff.

The projectile was fired towards the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, the report said, adding that additional details were not immediately available from military officials.

North Korea fired at least three unidentified projectiles Monday, according to US and South Korean officials.

"Our military detected 3 unidentified projectiles fired this morning from the Sondok area in Hamgyong Province, North Korea, toward northeast, toward the East Sea," the South Korea Defense Ministry said in a text to reporters.

"Currently, our military is monitoring related movement in case of additional launch and is maintaining preparedness."
The East Sea is also known as the Sea of Japan.

A US official told CNN that North Korea fired four unidentified projectiles.

North Korea has launched two unidentified projectiles, South Korea's military says, in its first apparent weapons test of the year.

The projectiles were launched from the North's east coast towards the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said they were "believed to be short-range ballistic missiles".

Last May saw the first missile tests after an 18-month freeze. As the year progressed, many more followed.

North Korea, which has historically stepped up missile testing in the spring, carried out its last test in November.

North Korea fired an 'unidentified projectile' today, apparently ramping up its weapons tests while talks with the United States remain deadlocked.

The Thanksgiving launch was revealed in a one-line announcement by South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff which gave no further details.

Japanese media quoted sources from the defence ministry in Tokyo saying that two projectiles were launched from North Korea's east coast.

The sources said that the projectiles appeared to be ballistic missiles - which Pyongyang is banned from firing under UN sanctions.

North Korea Fires Two 'Ballistic Missiles' Into The Sea of Japan

CNN: North Korea fired 2 unidentified projectiles, South Korea says

North Korea fired two "unidentified projectiles" into the waters between South Korea and Japan on Thursday afternoon, the South Korean government said in a statement.

It is unclear what exactly was launched, but South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the military "is maintaining its readiness by monitoring relevant movements in preparation for further launches."

Japan's Coast Guard said in a statement "it appears that North Korea has launched a missile" and advised ships to avoid the area.

If confirmed as a missile test, it would be the first by Pyongyang in nearly a month and the 12th since May. The country said it tested a new type of submarine-launched ballistic missile on October 2. Experts voiced concern over that event because it was the first missile test by North Korea in some time that didn't involve a shorter-range weapon.

North Korea Says It Has Successfully Tested A Submarine-Launched Missile

Test firing comes ahead of long-delayed denuclearization talks with the United States.

Just as long-delayed talks with the United States were set for the end of this week, North Korea test-fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile, or SLBM, on Wednesday morning.

The missile was fired from a position off the country’s East Coast near Wonsan at 7:11am on Wednesday and flew approximately 450 kilometers at an altitude of about 910km, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

South Korea’s presidential National Security Council convened an emergency meeting, Yonhap added.
