UN Says India Will Overtake China As The World’s Most Populous Country In 2023

 CNBC: India set to overtake China as the world’s most populous country in 2023, UN says 

 * “India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country during 2023,” the U.N. says. 

* According to the U.N., its latest projections show that the global population could reach roughly 8.5 billion in 2030 and 10.4 billion in 2100. 

* In a statement, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres talks of a “shared responsibility to care for our planet.” 

India is on track to overtake China as the planet’s most populous country next year, according to a U.N. report published on Monday. 

The report, from the population division of the U.N.’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said China and India were each home to over 1.4 billion people in 2022. 

“India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country during 2023,” the U.N. said. 

The Indian government’s census for 2011 put the country’s population at more than 1.2 billion.

The US population will grow until 2062, then shrink - alongside 182 other countries around the world - to 336 million by 2100, a new study predicts.

Fertility rates in the US and abroad have been declining and are expected to continue to do so for decades to come, driving the number of people in many nations down for the next 80 years, according to the new research from the University of Washington’s Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).

Women are having fewer children as more widespread gender equality allows them to pursue educations, and careers and improved access to contraception - shifts that delay the age at which women start to have children and the limiting the number of kids they ultimately give birth to.

By 2100, the authors of the new study, published in The Lancet, predict the average American woman will have just 1.5 children, 17.7 percent lower than 2017’s fertility rate of 1.8 children per woman. These falling birth rates are expected to drive the US population down from its 2062 peak of 364 million to 336 million by 2100.

Coupled with aging populations, declining fertility could shrink the populations of 23 countries - including Japan, Thailand, Italy and Spain.

The World's Population Will Hit 7.75 Billion By The End Of this Year

DW: World's population to hit 7.75 billion in 2019

The alarming increase is an estimate from a German foundation that monitors populations. It also suggests the 8 billion mark will be reached in the year 2023.

By the end of this year there will be some 7.75 billion people living on planet Earth, according to Germany's Foundation for World Population (DSW).

The estimate gauges that the world's population will have increased by 83 million since January 1 2019, which equates to roughly the number of inhabitants in Germany.

For the first time in modern history, the world’s population is expected to virtually stop growing by the end of this century, due in large part to falling global fertility rates, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of new data from the United Nations.

By 2100, the world’s population is projected to reach approximately 10.9 billion, with annual growth of less than 0.1% – a steep decline from current levels. Between 1950 and today, the world’s population grew between 1% and 2% each year, with the number of people rising from 2.5 billion to more than 7.7 billion.

UN News: World population set to grow another 2.2 billion by 2050: UN survey

The world’s population is set to grow by 2.2 billion between now and 2050, the UN said on Wednesday, and more than half of that growth - 1.3 billion - is likely to be in sub-Saharan Africa, where women’s rights are hampered by limited access to healthcare and education, along with “entrenched gender discrimination”.

Monica Ferro, Director of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in Geneva, said the trend globally is towards smaller families, indicating that more people are making choices about exactly how many children they want, or can afford to raise.

The world’s population will break through the 8 billion mark in 2023, there are more men than women, and next year the number of over 60s will top 1 billion for the first time, according to the latest findings and forecasts from the United Nations annual population survey.

More than half of the global population growth by 2050 will come from sub-Saharan Africa, where fertility rates will persist at levels far higher than in the rest of the world, the UN predictions released on Wednesday show.

.... Half the growth in numbers of people will come from just nine countries: India, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the US, Uganda and Indonesia. By 2050 seven of the world’s 20 most populous nations will be African.

Dueling projections of population growth present different visions of the world's future.

Warning: The 21st century may get a lot more crowded than previously thought.

In a paper published Thursday in Science, demographers from several universities and the United Nations Population Division conclude that instead of leveling off in the second half of the 21st century, as the UN predicted less than a decade ago, the world's population will continue to grow beyond 2100. (Read "Population Seven Billion" in National Geographic magazine.)

And for the first time, through the use of a "probabilistic" statistical method, the Science paper establishes a range of uncertainty around its central estimate-9.6 billion Earthlings in 2050, 10.9 billion by 2100. There's an 80 percent chance, the authors conclude, that the actual number of people in 2100 will be somewhere between 9.6 and 12.3 billion.

Research suggests we may actually face a declining world population in the coming years.

The world’s seemingly relentless march toward overpopulation achieved a notable milestone in 2012: Somewhere on the planet, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the 7 billionth living person came into existence.

Lucky No. 7,000,000,000 probably celebrated his or her birthday sometime in March and added to a population that’s already stressing the planet’s limited supplies of food, energy, and clean water. Should this trend continue, as the Los Angeles Times noted in a five-part series marking the occasion, by midcentury, “living conditions are likely to be bleak for much of humanity.”

The World Population Is Getting Older

World Faces Ageing Population Time Bomb Says UN -- The Telegraph

The world needs to take urgent action to cope with the impact of a rapidly ageing population, according to a new report, which forecast that the number of people older than 60 would surpass one billion within a decade.

A major study published by the United Nations has warned that the growing numbers of the elderly presented significant challenges to welfare, pension and health care systems in both developing and developed nations.

And it bemoans the fact that skills and knowledge that older people have acquired are going to waste in societies rather than being used to their full.

"We must commit to ending the widespread mismanagement of ageing," said Richard Blewitt, chief executive of HelpAge International, which collaborated on the report, Ageing in the 21st Century.

My Comment: We have the means to live longer .... and better than our descendents. I regard this as a positive development .... not the UN's line that the world is facing an "aging population time bomb".

Humans have mined resources from the remote and rocky coast of Peru and Chile for more than a century and a half, gathering the guano deposits of seabirds for fertilizer and gunpowder. Those seabirds flourished on anchoveta in the coastal waters, while Peruvians in the highlands ate the same fish as dried snacks.

Now fishing vessels haul 7.5 million tons of the small silvery fish out of the water every year. Almost all the catch is reduced to fish oil and fish meal, which is fed to pigs, poultry and salmon being raised thousands of miles away to satisfy demand in the industrialized and rapidly-growing developing world.

Seven billion. Next week the world's population will, according the UN, reach seven billion and a baby born somewhere in the world will be designated the seven billionth baby – just as Adnan Nevic, now a healthy 11-year-old living in Bosnia, became the six billionth when he was born just after midnight on 11 October, 1999.

There is, of course, a spurious precision about this. We may have passed seven billion already – there are some suggestions we got there three months ago – or if the US Census Bureau is right, it will not happen until next March. But the detail does not matter.

10.1 Billion People By The End Of The Century

U.N. Forecasts 10.1 Billion People by Century’s End -- New York Times

The population of the world, long expected to stabilize just above 9 billion in the middle of the century, will instead keep growing and may hit 10.1 billion by the year 2100, the United Nations projected in a report released Tuesday.

Growth in Africa remains so high that the population there could more than triple in this century, rising from today’s one billion to 3.6 billion, the report said — a sobering forecast for a continent already struggling to provide food and water for its people.
