Al Jazeera: Blast at mosque in Pakistan’s Peshawar kills at least 47 people 

Officials say an explosion at a mosque in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, has caused multiple casualties. 

More than 40 people have been killed and about 150 others wounded in a suicide bomb attack targeting police at a mosque in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, according to officials. 

Sarbakaf Mohmand, a commander for the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for Monday’s attack on Twitter. The main spokesman for the group was not immediately available for comment. 

Earlier, a Lady Reading Hospital spokesperson in Peshawar, Muhammed Asim, told Al Jazeera at least 32 people were killed and more than 70 injured people were brought in for treatment. A Peshawar police official told Al Jazeera about 150 people were wounded in total.

Pakistan's Supreme Court has ordered the release of four Islamist militants convicted and later acquitted in the gruesome beheading of American journalist Daniel Pearl in 2012. 

The court also dismissed an appeal against the militants - including British-born Ahmad Saeed Omar Sheikh who had been on death row - by the Wall Street Journal reporter's family. 

Sheikh, Fahad Naseem, Syed Salman and Muhammad Adil were found guilty of the abduction and murder of the journalist in 2012.

Leaked footage, showing Interior Minister Shehryar Afridi promise 'full support' to UN-designated terrorist Hafiz Saeed and his groups, expected to create trouble for Imran Khan govt.

A video clip surfaced on Monday showing Pakistan Interior Minister Shehryar Afridi promising “full support” to UN-designated terrorist Hafiz Saeed, founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and mastermind of the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

The video shows Afridi sitting with members of the Milli Muslim League (MML), a body affiliated with the LeT, reassuring that the group would be protected by the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI).

“Allah willing, as long as we are in the Assembly, we will support Hafiz Saeed and anyone who follows the righteous path. This is our faith,” Afridi is seen as saying.

Pakistani Militants Attack Chinese Consulate In Karachi

ABC News Online: Chinese consulate in Pakistan attacked, leaving five dead including three suicide bombers

Suicide bombers have attacked the Chinese consulate in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi, killing two police officers but failing to enter the compound.

A blast and gunshots rang out in the affluent Clifton neighbourhood, where the consulate is located, along with those of several other nations.

A doctor at a nearby hospital confirmed at least two Pakistani policemen had died, and a security guard was injured.

Changing one's name in Pakistan is a daunting and lengthy legal procedure that requires extensive paperwork.

Surprisingly, that is not the case with militant groups that get banned by the government. In the past two decades, several groups accused of carrying out terror attacks have avoided a crackdown by changing their names.

New York Times: Militant Leader Hafiz Saeed Is Released by Pakistani Court

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A Pakistani court has ordered the full release of Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, the founder of the Islamist militant group that carried out the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks, 10 months after the government placed him under house arrest, his lawyer said.

The move will free Mr. Saeed to participate more directly in Pakistan’s politics. And at a time when the United States has been pushing Pakistan to do better in curbing militants, it presents another example of how the most extremist voices in the country seem to be moving more into the mainstream.

Mr. Saeed had long been one of the most-wanted militant leaders in the region, but he had been living in the open in Pakistan for years despite a $10 million American bounty on him. India, in particular, has criticized Pakistan for not bringing him to justice after the militant group he founded, Lashkar-e-Taiba, killed 166 people in the Mumbai attacks.

CNN: Pakistan launches terrorism crackdown after spate of bloody attacks

(CNN)Pakistan's military has announced a major new nationwide operation to deal with militancy in the country in the wake of a string of terrorist attacks.

The operation, called Radd-ul-Fasaad, which translates to 'Elimination of Discord,' has been launched to "eliminate the menace of terrorism," according to a statement released by the military.
The announcement comes after a wave of bloody attacks has lead to mounting public criticism of the army and government.

BBC: Pakistan 'kills 100 militants' after Sufi shrine attack

Pakistan says it has killed more than 100 militants in a security crackdown following Thursday's attack on a shrine that left at least 80 people dead.

A suicide bomber blew himself up among devotees at the Sufi shrine in the town of Sehwan.

Pakistan has reacted with raids across the country and by lashing out at Afghanistan which it accuses of tolerating militant sanctuaries.

So-called Islamic State said it had carried out the attack.

It was the latest in a string of bombings by the jihadist group.

In response, some 18 militants were killed in southern Sindh province, where the Sufi shrine is located, and another 13 in the north-west, officials said. It is unclear where the other alleged terrorists were killed.

A suicide bomber killed scores of Sufi worshippers and wounded hundreds as they were performing a ritual in Pakistan's Lal Shahbaz Qalandar Sufi shrine in Sindh province.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group claimed responsibility for Thursday's attack in Sehwan via it Amaq website.

Khadim Hussain, deputy inspector-general of Hyderabad police, told Al Jazeera that at least 75 people were killed in the blast, and more than 200 were injured.

At least 43 men, nine women and 20 children were among the victims.

Analysis: Here’s Why Pakistan Finally Arrested Hafiz Saeed

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan — Pakistan's decision this week to finally detain the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks signals a broader shift in the country's treatment of extremists.

Placing Hafiz Saeed under house arrest was driven in part by President Donald Trump's arrival on the world stage as well as pressure from China, according to military insiders and experts.

"Recent indicators from our friends, the U.S. and China, are that he has to go," said a senior officer on the sidelines of a rare briefing held at the military's General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

This pronouncement came less than 24 hours after Monday's arrest of Saeed, an extremist who espouses "jihad," or holy war, with India.

The U.S. has a $10 million bounty on his head, and India accuses him of being the mastermind of the Mumbai attacks that left 166 dead, including several Americans.

Terror Attack At Police Academy In Pakistan Kills 60

CNN: Militant group attacks Pakistan police academy; scores dead

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN)At least 59 people were killed and 118 injured when militants attacked a police training academy in Quetta, Pakistan, late Monday night, government officials said.

Major General Sher Afgan, Chief of the Paramilitary Frontier Corps, told reporters Tuesday that Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-jhangvi was behind the attack -- an al Qaeda-linked militant group that has repeatedly carried out deadly attacks on the country's Shiite Muslim minority in recent years.

One attacker was killed by security forces; two others died when they detonated bombs they were carrying, said Sarfraz Bugti, Home Minister for Balochistan province, where Quetta is located. He added the assault ended in the early hours of Tuesday.

The attackers targeted a hostel at the academy where as many as 700 police cadets live. Two hundred cadets were rescued Monday night, Bugti said.

Five or six "terrorists entered the training school and (went) straight to the hostel where they took cadets hostage," the Pakistani army said in a statement.

ABC News Online: Pakistan suicide bombing: Death toll rises to 36, including eight children

Eight children are among 36 people who were killed in a Taliban suicide bomb attack on a mosque in northwest tribal Pakistan, officials say.

The Friday (local time) attack targeted a mosque in the Mohmand tribal district bordering Afghanistan where the army has been fighting against Taliban militants.

"We have now compiled a list of victims of the blast, which includes 36 dead and 27 injured. At least eight children below the age of 10 years are among the dead," deputy chief of the Mohmand tribal district administration Naveed Akbar said.

Reuters: Suicide bomber kills at least 63 at Pakistan hospital

A suicide bomber in Pakistan killed at least 63 people and wounded dozens more in an attack on mourners gathered at a hospital in Quetta, according to officials in the violence-plagued southwestern province of Baluchistan.

The bomber struck as more than 100 mourners, mostly lawyers and journalists, crowded into the emergency department to accompany the body of a prominent lawyer who had been shot and killed in the city earlier in the day, Faridullah, a journalist who was among the wounded, told Reuters.

Abdul Rehman Miankhel, a senior official at the government-run Civil Hospital, where the explosion occurred, told reporters that at least 63 people had been killed, with more than 50 wounded, as the casualty toll spiked from initial estimates.

A U.S. drone strike in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday killed the mastermind behind the 2014 attack on a military-run school in Pakistan that left more than 130 children dead, the Pakistani military said.

Khalifa Omar Mansour, a top commander of the Pakistani Taliban, died in the strike, Taliban sources also confirmed, adding that three of his bodyguards were believed dead.

The five officers allegedly tried to steal a Pakistani warship to attack a U.S. naval vessel.

At least five officers of the Pakistan Navy received death sentences in a secret military trial for allegedly trying to hijack a Pakistan Navy vessel to attack a U.S. Navy refueling ship, Daily Pakistan reports.

The officers were convicted of planning and orchestrating the September 6, 2014, attack on the Karachi Naval Dockyard located at Pakistan’s Arabian Sea coast. The attack was thwarted by Pakistani military personnel with purportedly two attackers killed and four arrested alive (some sources cite 10 killed, including four rogue naval officers).

The attackers allegedly attempted to hijack the F-22P Zulfiquar-class frigate Zulfiqar, the lead ship of its class, with the intention of using the ship’s missiles to attack a U.S. Navy refuel vessel in the Arabian Sea (other sources claim that the target was a U.S. aircraft carrier).

Reuters: Suicide bomber kills 65, mostly women and children in Pakistan park

A suicide bomber killed at least 65 people and injured more than 280 others, mostly women and children, at a public park in the Pakistani city of Lahore on Sunday, striking at the heart of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's political base of Punjab.

The blast occurred in the parking area of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park, a few feet away from children's swings.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, which occurred in a busy residential area during the Easter holiday weekend. Police said it was not clear whether the attack had deliberately targeted mainly Muslim Pakistan's small Christian minority.

Pakistan, a nuclear-armed nation of 190 million people, is plagued by a Taliban insurgency, criminal gangs and sectarian violence. Punjab is its biggest and wealthiest province.

Militants Attack University In Pakistan Killing At Least 22

Reuters: Militants kill at least 19 as they storm Pakistan university

Armed militants stormed a university in volatile northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing at least 19 people and wounding dozens a little more than a year after the massacre of 134 students at a school in the area, officials said.

A senior Pakistani Taliban commander claimed responsibility for the assault in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province but an official spokesman later denied involvement, calling the attack "un-Islamic".

The violence nevertheless shows that militants retain the ability to launch attacks, despite a country-wide anti-terrorism crackdown and a military campaign against their strongholds along the lawless border with Afghanistan.

Al Jazeera: Pakistani Taliban storms airbase near Peshawar

At least 21 security officers among 43 dead in firefight after attack by fighters on military barracks and mosque.

Fighters belonging to the Pakistani Taliban have stormed an air force station near Peshawar in Pakistan's northwest, resulting in a firefight with security forces and the deaths of at least 43 people, sources say.

ISPR, the Pakistan military's media wing, said at least 21 security officers and five civilians working at the Badaber Air Force base died and 14 fighters were killed in Friday morning's gun battle.

BBC: Pakistan gunmen kill 45 on Karachi Ismaili Shia bus

At least 45 people have been killed and 13 injured in a gun attack on a bus carrying Ismaili Shia Muslims in the Pakistani city of Karachi, police say.

Police said six gunmen on motorcycles had stopped the bus and fired indiscriminately at passengers.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned the attack and ordered an investigation.

Pakistani Taliban splinter group Jundullah and Islamic State (IS) both said they had carried out the attack.

Later, the militant group Tehrik Taliban Pakistan (TTP) also said it was behind the shooting.

Two Christian Churches Targeted By Taliban Bombers In Pakistan

Washington Post: Christians riot in Pakistan after attacks targeting churches kill 14

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Christians rampaged through the streets of Lahore on Sunday after suicide bombers attacked two churches during morning services, killing at least 14 people and wounding more than 70.

The Pakistani Taliban took credit for the attacks, reviving concerns that the Islamist militant group will increasingly target religious minorities in a bid to further divide Pakistanis and distract them from ongoing military operations against extremists.
