EU Threatens To Ban Twitter

Politico: Blocked! French minister threatens to ban Twitter if it doesn’t follow EU rules  

“Twitter, if it repeatedly doesn’t follow our rules, will be banned from the EU,” said France’s digital minister, Jean-Noël Barrot. 

France's Digital Minister Jean-Noël Barrot waded into a growing tussle between the European Union and Elon Musk's Twitter on Monday, as he threatened the social media platform's access to the bloc. 

In comments made on radio network France Info, the minister said that the U.S. company would be banned from the EU if it refused to follow the incoming European Digital Services Act, which goes into effect throughout the EU at the end of August. 

"Disinformation is one of the gravest threats weighing on our democracies," said Barrot. "Twitter, if it repeatedly doesn't follow our rules, will be banned from the EU," the French minister added.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has claimed the U.S. government had access to users private messages on Twitter. 

In a wide-ranging interview with Fox News' Tucker Carlson, set to be broadcast on Monday and Tuesday night, Musk made the startling claims noting how he was shocked to learn that the government had full access to private communications on the platform. 

The billionaire tycoon told Carlson how unaware of the fact until he joined the company and expressed surprise at the degree to which government agencies were able to monitor social media.

It’s January 4th, 2023, which means Twitter Files stories have been coming out for over a month. Because these are weedsy tales, and may be hard to follow if you haven’t from the beginning, I’ve written up capsule summaries of each of the threads by all of the Twitter Files reporters, and added links to the threads and accounts of each. At the end, in response to some readers (especially foreign ones) who’ve found some of the alphabet-soup government agency names confusing, I’ve included a brief glossary of terms to help as well.

The FBI has issued a statement in response to the Elon Musk's release of THE TWITTER FILES, which boils down to 'Of course we've embedded ourselves in social media companies, and anyone who has a problem with it is a conspiracy theorist trying to tarnish our stellar reputation.'

To What Extent Did The FBI Play A Role In Censoring Information On Twitter?

Daily Mail: FBI paid Twitter $3.5M 'to do its bidding': Taxpayers' money was used for 'processing requests' from the bureau amid Hunter Biden censorship scandal - as anger grows over secret state censorship of the American people 

* The most recent batch of Twitter files show that the FBI paid off staffers at the tech giant to the tune of $3.5 million 

* Emails show that Twitter's deputy counsel Jim Baker met with feds for top secret meeting - a day before he said Hunter laptop should be banned  

* In response to the latest Twitter files dump, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said: 'This is going to be a much bigger situation than people realize' 

* Earlier it was revealed that former FBI lawyer turned Twitter general counsel Jim Baker helped to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story 

The FBI handed nearly $3.5 million of taxpayers money to Twitter to pay its staff to handle requests from the bureau as it sought to ban accounts. 

A Twitter employee wrote in a February 2020 email that the company's Safety, Content & Law Enforcement (SCALE) had 'collected $3,415,323' in less than two years from the FBI for 'law-enforcement related projects.' 

The email, which was revealed by journalist Michael Shellenberger, stated that SCALE had instituted a 'reimbursement program' in exchange for devoting staff hours to 'processing requests from the FBI'.

As to what is my take. There does appear to be enough evidence that the FBI did try to influence Twitter on what could be posted. This should surprise no one. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself admitted the FBI influenced his company to ban certain posts, so why not Twitter .... Zuckerberg tells Rogan FBI warning prompted Biden laptop story censorship (BBC). 

So what should be done? 

In the 1970s the US Senate launched the Church Committee Hearings to investigate abuses by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Security Agency (NSA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) (link here). It looks like the US needs another similar hearing to investigate alleged abuses from these agencies in 2023. 

 Update: One thing that I find remarkable about the release of the Twitter files is the almost complete absence of legacy media coverage of this story. I know in Canada there has been zero coverage from the main networks. So the question is why? Hmmm .... Dinesh D'Souza may have a point (see below).

Elon Musk Announces He Will Resign As Twitter CEO Once He Finds 'Someone Foolish' Enough As Successor

Daily Mail: Elon Musk announces he WILL resign as Twitter CEO after humiliating defeat in his own poll - as soon as he finds 'someone foolish enough to take the job' 

 * Musk confirmed that he'd be stepping down from the role as CEO of Twitter 

 * But he said he first needs to find a replacement 'foolish enough' to take over  

 * The tech billionaire put out a poll over the weekend asking users to vote on whether he should resign as head of the social media site 

 * Perhaps to his surprise, the majority of people voted for him to leave the role 

Elon Musk will resign as Twitter CEO after being defeated in his own disastrous poll. 

The Tesla boss, 51, said when he uploaded the poll that he would 'abide by' the result - even if users said he should step down.  

The result was confirmed Monday morning, with a total of 57.5 per cent of more than 17million accounts voting for him to step down from his position.

* More than 17.5million people voted, with 57.5% saying they wanted him to go  

Elon Musk might be on the way out as head of Twitter after nearly 60 per cent of users who voted in a poll want him to be sacked. 

After weeks of criticism for how he has run the website since he took it over at the end of October, the Chief Twit put a review of his performance to the people.

* Part Five of the so-called Twitter Files dropped Monday afternoon 

* It details Twitter's decision to indefinitely ban Donald Trump, who was president at the time, from the platform  

* Internal correspondence shows those assigned to evaluate Trump's tweets didn't see proof of incitement of the Capitol riot 

* That didn't stop for massive internal calls to ban the president from Twitter  Twitter decided to indefinitely ban Donald Trump two days after the January 6 Capitol attack when rank-and-file employees compared him to Adolf Hitler and a terrorist leader - even though senior staff said said he didn't violate policy. 

The latest revelations of the platform's actions taken against the former president and conservative voices were detailed in the fifth installment of the Twitter files published on Monday afternoon. 

Journalist Bari Weiss shared internal messaging showing some staffers for the social media platform were concerned of the negative repercussions of banning Trump, including allegations of censorship.

Twitter Blacklisted Conservatives According To Latest Installment Of The Twitter Files

Daily Mail: Twitter's secret 'blacklist': Second tranche of bombshell internal files reveal conservatives were marked 'do not amplify' and COVID lockdown skeptics 'shadow banned' in a move staff called 'visibility filtering' to stop accounts and topics trending 

* Journalists Matt Taibbi and Bari Weiss have been handed a trove of documents from Twitter, detailing why they censored the story of Hunter Biden's laptop 

* Taibbi released the first tranche of the documents on Friday, and Weiss on Thursday followed up with a second series * Weiss revealed that conservatives and lockdown skeptics were deliberately down-ranked by Twitter, to stop their accounts gaining prominence  

* Among those blacklisted were Fox News regular Dan Bongino and youth activist Charlie Kirk, plus Stanford CDC critic Dr Jay Bhattacharya 

* Jack Dorsey and his head of legal, Vijaya Gadde, both denied that Twitter ever deliberately downgraded or 'shadow banned' any accounts  

* The documents from Taibbi showed panic among senior Twitter staff in October 2020 when The New Post reported on the contents of Hunter's computer

Twitter kept a 'secret blacklist' of topics and accounts to prevent them from trending, according to data obtained by journalist Bari Weiss - with up to 200 'cases' being dealt with a day by a special division within the company.  

Conservative commentators such as Dan Bongino and Charlie Kirk were deliberately put on a 'search blacklist' - in the case of Bongino - or tabbed 'do not amplify', in the case of Kirk. 

Those who questioned the prevailing COVID orthodoxy of lockdowns and mask mandates, such as Stanford's Dr Jay Bhattacharya, who argued that lockdowns harmed children, were also placed on a 'search blacklist'.

French President Macron Ends US Visit With A Surprise Meeting With Elon Musk

France 24: Wrapping up US trip, Macron meets Musk for ‘honest’ talk 

President Emmanuel Macron on Friday visited New Orleans, a city emblematic of historic Franco-American ties, to promote the French language and conclude his state visit to the United States. 

The French president, on the third day of a US trip that included a lavish reception at the White House a night earlier, strolled New Orleans's historic French Quarter -- and held an unannounced face-to-face meeting with Twitter owner Elon Musk. 

Macron said the two had a "clear and honest" discussion during an hour-long meeting, and that he conveyed to Musk his -- and Europe's -- concerns about content moderation on the influential platform.

It is clear to me that the staff at Twitter probably never thought that these internal discussions would be made public. They must be really pissed. On another note. You know that this type of political bias, influence and censorship is even worse at Facebook and Google/YouTube.

Twitter’s decision to let COVID-19 misinformation run wild frustrates Brussels and Paris. 

Twitter’s decision to stop enforcing its COVID-19 misinformation policy has put another bullseye on Elon Musk's back. 

“In my view, Twitter now is jumping to the front of the queue of the regulators,” Věra Jourová, the European Commission’s vice president for values and transparency, told POLITICO. 

“Mr. Musk seems to want to attract a lot of attention,” she added when asked about the Commission’s stance on Twitter’s decision not to remove falsehoods related to the ongoing global pandemic. “I think he succeeded in attracting the attention of the regulators, also with a recent decision not to assess COVID-related disinformation.”

FOX News: Elon Musk says Twitter 'has interfered in elections' 

Twitter CEO Musk promises, 'Twitter 2.0 will be far more effective, transparent and even-handed' 

Twitter owner and CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday acknowledged that prior to his takeover, the "obvious reality" was that Twitter "has interfered in elections" through its content moderation policies. 

Musk's explosive assertion came in response to comments made by Yoel Roth, Twitter's former head of trust and safety, who indicated the social media platform was not safer under the Tesla CEO's leadership. Roth was speaking at a Knight Foundation conference on Tuesday when he explained why he resigned from Twitter, accusing Musk of running the company like a dictator.

Reuters: White House keeping a 'close eye' on misinformation on Twitter 

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House said on Monday it was monitoring social media platform Twitter, now under the stewardship of new Chief Executive Elon Musk, for misinformation. 

"This is something that we're certainly keeping an eye on," said White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre, when asked about Twitter becoming a vector for misinformation. 

Jean-Pierre said it was the responsibility of social media platforms to "make sure that when it comes to misinformation, when it comes to the hate that we're seeing, that... they take action, that they continue to take action."

Elon Musk Reinstates Donald Trump's Twitter Account After Holding Poll On Whether To Bring Him Back

* Elon Musk started a Twitter poll late on Friday asking followers to vote on whether to reinstate former President Donald Trump's account on the platform  

* On Saturday night, results shows 51.8% voted 'yes' to Trump being allowed back on Twitter, with the poll open for a full 24 hours  

* Trump has already stated he will not return to Twitter even if reinstated  

* His account previously had 90 million followers but they were all removed  

* His new account quickly reached 1 million followers within an hour  

* On Friday, Musk said the accounts for comedian Kathy Griffin, Dr. Jordan Peterson & The Babylon Bee satire site have been restored  

* Musk added that Twitter will be a free speech platform, but that hate tweets will be demonetized and not seen by many  

Elon Musk has reinstated former President Trump's Twitter account on Saturday night after being barred from the platform for almost two years. 

But Trump appeared to have his almost 90 million followers wiped clean from his account and was starting from scratch.  

Within one hour of being reinstated onto the platform, Trump's account had already garnered more than 1.6 million followers.

CBS News Suspends Twitter Posting

Variety: CBS News Suspends Twitter Posting ‘In Light of the Uncertainty’ About Musk-Owned Social Platform 

CBS News is halting its activity on Twitter over Elon Musk’s turbulent and potentially devastating moves following his takeover of the company. 

“In light of the uncertainty around Twitter and out of an abundance of caution, CBS News is pausing its activity on the social media site as it continues to monitor the platform,” Jonathan Vigliotti, CBS News national correspondent, said in a report about the latest chaos at the company on the “CBS Evening News” Friday. 

A statement with nearly identical wording was shared Friday by the Twitter account of KPIX, the CBS-owned station in San Francisco.

WNU Editor: CBS is over-reacting. Even if technical problems do occur on the platform, Elon Musk has the resources from SpaceX, Tesla and elsewhere to call upon to fix it. 

What CBS is actually saying is that they do not like the idea that some people who have been banned on the platform are now being permitted to come back.

Twitter Claims User Growth Is Now At An 'All-Time Highs'

FOX News: Twitter claims user growth at 'all-time highs' after Elon Musk's purchase: report 

Twitter had 237.8 million daily active users at the end of the second quarter Growth of daily active users on Twitter spiked 20% in the first week of Elon Musk's ownership, according to an internal document obtained by The Verge, a metric that may dispel concerns of a mass exodus from the platform. 

Twitter had 237.8 million monetizable daily active users at the end of the second quarter, according to the last earnings report before Musk took the company private.
