UN Says Some 110 Million People Are Now Displaced Around The World

Reuters: Global level of forced displacement climbs to record 110 million, UN says

GENEVA (Reuters) - The number of people forcibly displaced around the world has climbed to a record 110 million people, the head of the U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) said, with conflicts in Ukraine and Sudan spurring millions of people to flee their homes.

The increase of around 19 million people to 108.4 million by the end of last year is the biggest annual jump on record, UNHCR said in a report released on Wednesday.

That number has since risen further to 110 million, mostly due to Sudan's eight-week-old conflict, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi told journalists.

"It's quite an indictment on the state of our world to have to report that," he said at a Geneva press conference.

United Nations: Refugee Numbers Hit Record High In 2019

DW: Refugee numbers hit record high in 2019: UN report

Around 79.5 million people were displaced last year, more than ever before, the United Nations has revealed. And displaced people are finding it even harder to return to their home countries.

The number of people fleeing war and persecution rose to a record 79.5 million in 2019, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said Thursday.

That figure represents "approximately 1% of the world population," said agency chief Filippo Grandi.

Figures in detail

The UN's refugee agency published its annual report, revealing that:

* The number of refugees rose by 9 million from the previous year
* Syrians, Venezuelans, Afghans, South Sudanese, and stateless Rohingya are worst-affected
* Some 73% of refugees seek asylum in a neighboring country
* Fewer than 400,000 refugees returned home over the past decade, down from an average of 1.5 million in the 1990s.

U.N. Report: Nearly 71 Million People Forcibly Displaced Worldwide In 2018

Daily Mail: A record 71 million people were displaced from their homes last year, UN reveals - with the huge number of people fleeing Venezuela a major factor

* Venezuelans were the largest number of new asylum seekers amid turmoil there
* Syrians remained the largest group of displaced people, according to UN report
* Launching it, the UN's refugee chief decried 'damaging' anti-immigrant rhetoric

A record 71million people were displaced from their homes because of war, persecution and violence last year, the UN has revealed.

Venezuelans were the largest number of new asylum seekers, amid a spiralling political and economic crisis in the South American nation which has prompted at least 4milloin to flee the country.

Syrian people remained the largest group of displaced people, according to the report which said that many refugees around the world had been displaced for several years.

The annual Global Trends report said the worldwide total had increased by 2million since 2017, adding that the figures were 'conservative' and could be higher.

The number of refugees fleeing conflicts ballooned to 1 percent of the global population, the highest level in modern history, according to a report showing the world is less peaceful now than at any time in the last 10 years.

Terrorism and internal conflict were the two biggest contributors pushing down the 2018 Global Peace Index, it’s fourth consecutive annual drop, according to a report published by the Institute of Economics & Peace. Iceland retained the top spot as the world’s most peaceful country while Syria was the least peaceful for the fifth straight year.

“Increased numbers of refugees, terrorism, and heightened political tensions were behind the deterioration,” Steve Killelea, the institute’s founder, said in an interview. “Refugees on their own would make one of the world’s biggest nations.”

UN News Centre: Violence and persecution uprooted record 65.6 million people in 2016, UN agency reports

Nearly 66 million people were forcibly displaced from their homes last year, the United Nation refugee agency today reported, stressing the “very high” pace at which conflict and persecution is forcing people to flee their homes.

The figure equates to “one person displaced every three seconds – less than the time it takes to read this sentence.”

The report Global Trends, released by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), marks a jump of 300,000 since the end of 2015.

Some Key Facts On The World's Refugee Crisis

PEW Research Center: Key facts about the world’s refugees

With the number of displaced people at a record 65.3 million in 2015 – a total that counts both those living inside and outside of their home countries – World Refugee Day has gained new prominence as countries, including the U.S., have taken in large numbers of people.

Here are some key facts about refugees arriving in Europe and the U.S. from around the world:

CNN: UNHCR report: More displaced now than after WWII

(CNN)The U.N.'s refugee agency reports that the number of displaced people is at its highest ever -- surpassing even post-World War II numbers, when the world was struggling to come to terms with the most devastating event in history.

The total at the end of 2015 reached 65.3 million -- or one out of every 113 people on Earth, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The number represents a 5.8 million increase on the year before.

A little under 1% of the earth's population is either "an asylum-seeker, internally displaced or a refugee" according to the UNHCR report, which was released Monday.

The report offers three main reasons for the increase in the rate of forced displacements:

The number of internally displaced people rose to a record 40.8 million people in 2015, according to a joint report released Wednesday by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and the Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC).

United Nations: 50 Million Refugees For The First Time Since WWII

Number Of Displaced People Hits 50 Million, Highest Since WWII -- Voice of America

GENEVA — The U.N. refugee agency’s annual Global Trends report says more than 50 million people were forcibly displaced by conflict at the end of last year, the highest number since World War II.

As the world marks World Refugee Day, these staggering figures are nothing to celebrate. Of the more than 50 million people forcibly displaced, the report finds 16.7 million are refugees and more than twice that number, 33.3 million, are people displaced within their own countries.

U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said these growing numbers are a result of the multiplication of new crises. He said the alarming spectacle of seeing millions of people forced to flee for their lives confirms the inability of nations to resolve or prevent conflict.

World Refugee Day: U.N. Announces Worst Crisis in Nearly Two Decades -- Time

A United Nations report released ahead of World Refugee Day on June 20 finds that we’re experiencing the worst refugee crisis in nearly two decades. More than 45.2 million people have been displaced from their homes due to conflict or violence, up from 42.5 million a year earlier, making it the highest number since 1994, when millions of people fled ethnic violence in former Yugoslavia and genocide in Rwanda.

The overall number breaks down into three categories: 15.4 million people fled as refugees across borders, 28.8 million were internally displaced within their own countries, while 937,000 others sought asylum elsewhere. That last figure matches a report in April by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center.

More Than Seven Million Refugees Displaced In 2012 - UN -- BBC

The UN says 7.6 million people became refugees in 2012, with the total number now higher than at any time since 1994.

A report from the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says that Syria is "a major new factor" driving up refugee numbers.

The report say 55% of all refugees come from five countries: Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, Sudan and Syria.

It also found that developing countries now hosted 81% of the world's refugees, 11% more than a decade ago.

"These truly are alarming numbers. They reflect individual suffering on a huge scale and they reflect the difficulties of the international community in preventing conflicts and promoting timely solutions for them," said UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres.

UN: Millions Of Refugees Languish In Camps For Decades

Refugee Camp In Darfur

From Voice Of America:

More than two-thirds of the world's refugees, some six million people, are living in limbo. Many have been in exile for decades with no hope of going home. They are trapped in squalid refugee camps and communities, struggling to survive in remote, insecure parts of the world. The UN refugee agency recently convened an international conference aimed at seeking durable solutions to these protracted refugee situations.

The burden of hosting refugees falls almost exclusively to developing countries and in particular, to Africa. UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, said the international community has not done enough to share that burden.

The Global Refugee Crisis Worsens

Rwandan Refugee Camp

From Time Magazine:

The white refugee tents pitched in London's Trafalgar Square this week are meant to underscore a stark message: more people than ever before are being forced by war, famine or natural disaster to flee their homes. In the run-up to World Refugee Day on June 20, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, said that the UNHCR last year cared for 25.1 million refugees and internally displaced people. That is the highest level of need ever recorded in the agency's 57-year history — 10% more than in 2006 — and the upward trend is bound to continue.
