Killing Of General Vexes Rebels In Libya -- New York Times

BENGHAZI, Libya — In a mourning tent for the Libyan rebels’ top military leader, who was assassinated last week in mysterious circumstances, relatives and members of his tribe warned on Tuesday of dire consequences, including violence, if rebel leaders did not move quickly to find his killers.

The relatives, including three of his sons, warned that the provisional rebel government, the Transitional National Council, was moving too slowly to form a committee to investigate the death the commander, Gen. Abdul Fattah Younes. General Younes and two colleagues were shot to death by unknown gunmen on Thursday.

The Libyan government stated early on that this rebel movement was for the most part an al-Qaeda infiltrated effort. The Rebels do not deny this and as a mater of fact state that they are good fighters.

Of course they are, they have been practicing in Iraq and Afghanistan for a decade now.

The danger of this is the establishment of an extremist Islamist government that is outside of the control of the West. Just as the CIA trained the Bin Laden movement in Afghanistan to defeat the Russians, we are now supplying weapons and training to these same fanatics to defeat a non compliant leader of Libya. How many times must the US travel down this dangerous road? What is the real reason for this war?

The intent from the beginning was to establish the USAFRICOM on Libyan soil. Gaddafi refused to cooperate with the US in this regard, so regime change was in the cards.

Gaddafi was the first head of state, (perhaps the only), to charge Bin Laden with crimes against humanity. He reported that Bin Laden was targeting himself and other Libyan leaders for assassination over a decade ago. Interpol refused to respond to the Libyan charges.

Our American Foreign Policy is in tatters. We are increasingly hated throughout the world as a result of our over 1,000 military bases that are located on the vast majority of the world's nations.

The excuse for this war was protecting humans, yet our and NATO's bombs have now killed over 1,000 innocent civilians. Protecting humans by bombing from 30,000 feet?

It is time for Uncle Sam to fold his tent and bring our troops home from all over the world, retrain those troops and get serious about rebuilding our decaying infrastructure and society. Only then will we once again become a beacon of civil and human rights for the rest of the world. War will not help us rebuild our global reputation or our nation.
