North and South Korea’s New Military Agreement Is One Step Among Many For Korean Reconciliation

South Korea Defense Ministry

Sukjoon Yoon, The Diplomat: North and South Korea’s New Military Agreement

Despite questions, the agreement should be welcomed – including by the U.S.

At the Pyongyang summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, held from September 18-20, 2018, a declaration was signed by the ranking military officials of the two Koreas. This agreement is intended to prevent military confrontation on the Korean Peninsula. Specifically it establishes buffer zones, based on the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) (a.k.a. the Armistice Line) on land, and on the Northern Limit Line (NLL) at sea. Optimists see the agreement as a useful step toward better relations; pessimists see it as a step too far, given the continuing military tensions on the Korean Peninsula. A balanced appraisal suggests that it is too soon to decide.

WNU Editor: I expected an agreement to end the Korean war to happen first before this military agreement. I hope it is not because South Korean President Moon is in a rush to push reconciliation with the North. The next two years are going to be critical .... we can only hope for the best.

The reason why I hatte cnn
Look at the language they use in this smear article to shape opinions about this man after dragging him through the mud and giving unfair coverage to one side of the story

https://edition-m.cnn.com/2018/10/05/politics/brett-kavanaugh-donald-trump-republicans-vote/index.html?r=https%3A%2F%2Fedition.cnn.com%2F

The call him hyper partisan, showing unacceptable behaviour, label him an operative. ..Just the choice of words. .just one step from calling him evil again eh cnn? How many times does cnn want to lose out to the cartoon network in ratings? And all their taking heads look the same, sound the same and wear even the same glasses to look intellectual. ..Göd, this network has fallen so badly over the last 10 years... poor Ted Turner - it used to be one of tee best networks out there, now just partisan hacks opposing anything Trump says, nominates or touches. Despicable what they do to Kavannaugh and the disservice they do to the country

I think president Moon knows what he is doing. Also, I think the South Korean people know what they are doing. To the best I can tell, he has enormous support among his electorate. If there were a problem, South Korean Intelligence Services would have warned him. I would tend to trust their judgment in cases such as this.

This is in contrast to the incompetent boobs and political hacks who make up US (un)intelligence. As the only new variable to this equation, Trump is the primary driving force behind this. Should he be impeached or lose his ability to influence things due to problems in the US this could derail things and we could be right back where we started. A year ago war not only looked inevitable but there was no guarantee would win along with substantial prospects that we would not win. I do not think we want to go back to that.

I also think Trump correctly calling out the South Koreans during the campaign as users and abusers of America has had an impact. Knowing that America would not nor could it be expected to serve as South Korea's pawn and bitch boy forever has likely influenced South Korea and its leaders to move towards trying to make peace with North Korea.

I would think there are many in South Korea who would love to be reunited with relatives in the North.

The Diplomat is the source of the article and Not CNN
the two sides have done this thus far on their own with out Trump
the older S.Koreans want to merge but the younger not interested (read up on this)
first thing we need to do is encourage N.K. to change their outlandish military hats

"The two sides have done this thus far on their own without Trump." This could well be true as we do not have access to inside information in real time. As such, we cannot "know" with 100% certainty. Now we can examine evidence to try and determine what is happening. 1.)Men like Kim, the Kim family, Moon, the people in SK leadership, the South Korean people, the North Korean people, men like Pompeo, and the desire for peace among SK and the US have all been there. These aren't new variable. Along comes Trump a new variable the likes of which has never been present at such levels of power and influence. Trump then makes the resolution of this conflict a top priority and things start happening. We could stop right here. The evidence does not support your claim.

Continuing on 2.)Kim felt it important to hold a Summit with Trump. If this were being done strictly by NK and SK on their own without significant assistance from Trump it would have been unnecessary to hold the summit and afford Trump the prestige it got him. He's now legitimized the American position.

Frankly, I won't this effort to be successful and I do not care who gets the credit. Based upon what is happening it appears that Trump looks at things this way as well.

I live in the ROK and trust me, Moon is desperate for something to improve his poll numbers.
