Washington Post: Talk of military takeover in Brazil grows
RIO DE JANEIRO - Flipping through the news several weeks ago, Carlos de Lima Belucio grew alarmed. People were panicking over a strange new disease. Other countries were locking down. Then it hit him: There was only one way to save the country. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro had to stage a military takeover.
Ignoring warnings to stay inside, Belucio began joining demonstrations urging Brazil's armed forces to remove the institutions that impede Bolsonaro's rule. Using violence, if need be. The country, he said, must stay open.
"The pandemic is just a smokescreen," said Belucio, 43, who lives in the northern city of Belém. "With a military regime, it would all be better."
As Latin America's largest nation grapples with its gravest health and economic challenges in a generation, and Bolsonaro flounders under the pressure, the specter of the armed forces is looming larger over public life than at any time since the fall of the military dictatorship in 1985.

Brasil has 210 million. 11,500 registered deaths is nothing.
.... Shocking scenes emerge in country ravaged by virus (Yahoo News).
Yahoo News is appropriately named; see definition #1.
Definition Yahoo:
1) a rude, noisy, or violent person.
2) Yahoo is defined as a exclamation of joy or excitement.
People working at Yahoo are not rednecks or from Appalachia. They are worse. They are public school and college graduates from the worst of the worst.
Brasil is a country that has had problems with poverty for 5 decades or more. Corona will not make it worse or better. Brasil will be on the same arc as before. It would behoove some yahoo at Yahoo to take 3 vacations to Brasil and get a feel for the country.
Maybe crappy can go to night school and take courses in biology or something. Maybe then we would not have such bad reporting.
On a related note: The complicit press is trying to push corona while Obamagate, which they were complicit in is exploding across the country.
Anon (10:29AM),
Nailed it!! The only things I would add is the response to coronavirus has caused more damage than the virus itself likely ever could. Also, as I understand it Brazilian leadership has resisted the pressure to close their economy. No wonder a coup might be being plotted. Due to the hype surrounding coronavirus cover is provided for those who seek unbridled power and control.

Brasilians are very passionate. They should not be underestimated, trifled with, or ignored. Brasilians are more passionate about soccer than Americans are about football. Carnival in Brasil is better than Mardi Gras. Quit looking at it like it is some Latin American sick man.
Brasil has the same problems as China. It is very advanced and has a lot of poor like India or China.
Tangent:
A lot of American manufacturing has moved to Brasil based on wages & TAXES.
FUCKING ASS CONGRESS CRITTERS NEED TO GET OFF THEIR ASSES AND STOP JUST FEEDING THEIR WASHINGTON LOBBYIST RELATIVES DEALS
"Suzuki, BMW, and Honda all started as motorcycle companies first. Honda's first auto wasn't made until 1963, BMW in 1928, and Suzuki in 1967. Honda started making bikes in 1949, BMW in 1923, and Suzuki in 1953."
If you are in a 2nd tier city and have to fly to a hub to get to your destination LOOK WHO MAKES THE AIRPLANE THAT YOU ARE FLYING ON, Embraer (Brasilian) or Bombadier (Canada). Might Embraer or Bombadier one day make all planes used in the US?
FUCK a DUCK, but Congress has to get off the ass and 'right size' government, so that we have America manufacturing and businesses.

The linked article is a a Washington Post hit piece.
"More than 430 people were killed or disappeared." in a country of what size. During that time America was entirely peaceful and no one was lynched, bombed, etc/
You are correct!! I've seen thhs all to many times and assumed "same old, same old." This one is a bit different. It seems, in thhs case the Brazilian president, seeks to maintain his leadership role against unscrupulous elements who want to shut down the economy among other things. I tend to think such a coup would be unlikely at this time. With that said if various leaders continue with this experiment push back that may include military actions aimed at reopening various countries may be pursued. I don't think such actions would have enough support at this time to be pursued.
It appears in Brazil, as in other countries, many are wanting to politicize the wuflu believing it will benefit them politically. Achieve an economic shutdown, ramp up testing, and start making political opponents disappear.
