Brazil Sinks Decommissioned Aircraft Carrier 'Sao Paolo' In Atlantic Despite Pollution Risk

A photo taken in 1994 shows the then-French aircraft carrier 'Foch' in the Adriatic Sea. Renamed 'Sao Paulo' when bought by Brazil in 2000, the ageing and decommissioned aircraft carrier was sunk on Friday February 3, 2023 in the Atlantic Ocean, Brazil's Navy said (File/AFP)

Washington Post: Brazil sinks decommissioned aircraft carrier in face of contamination fears

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s navy said Friday night that it had carried out a “planned and controlled” operation to sink a decommissioned aircraft carrier nearly 220 miles off its coast — despite the objections of environmentalists and some government officials who argued that it contained toxic materials that could contaminate the ocean.

The navy said in a statement that the operation to sink the São Paulo, a Clemenceau-class carrier, was carried out with the necessary technical competencies and safety measures in “order to avoid logistical, operational, environmental and economic losses to the Brazilian state.”

Despite those assurances, it was a near certainty that not everyone would see it that way. Shipbreaking Platform, a coalition of nonprofits that advocates for the safe recycling of ships, said last week that a controlled sinking would “equate to a state-sponsored environmental crime.”

Brazil's Proposal to Sink “Toxic” Carrier Raises Environmental Protest

Brazilian aircraft carrier São Paulo – Wikipedia

Business Insider: Brazil wants to abandon a 34,000-ton warship in international waters, and it could become one of the biggest pieces of garbage in the ocean

* Brazil plans to abandon its biggest warship, the "São Paulo," out at sea.

* The ship was en-route to a Turkish scrapyard to be taken apart, but was denied entry.

* It's believed to contain asbestos, and the Brazilian army now plans to abandon it in international waters.

Brazil is planning to abandon its biggest warship in international waters after failing to get it scrapped, and, as Ciara Nugent reported for Time, it could become one of the biggest pieces of garbage in the ocean.

The São Paulo, a 60-year-old aircraft carrier, has been floating abandoned in the South Atlantic Ocean for five months. Weighing 34,000 tons and reaching a length of 870 feet, it's the largest Brazilian warship in existence.

Brazil sold the ship to a Turkish scrapyard to be dismantled, per Time, and it started sailing to Turkey in August, but it was not allowed to dock in the country. Turkish authorities said the ship had asbestos, a toxic material commonly found in ships made in the 20th century.

Brazilian Police Have Arrested Almost 2,000 Since Yesterday's Riots In Brasilia

Daily Mail: Brazil's insurrection crackdown: 1,200 more Bolsonaro supporters are rounded up a day after rioters trashed senate building, including slashing a £1.2million painting - as their hero ex President lives it up in Florida

* Police rounded up 1,2000 protesters stationed in camps outside army HQ calling on military to oust Lula  * Yesterday, rioters stormed seats of power in Brasilia in bid to overturn election results

* Insurrectionists stormed government buildings, smashed up offices and defaced art and historic objects

* Meanwhile, Jair Bolsonaro is in Florida far away from the action

Brazilian police have arrested more than 1,200 protesters camping out in front of its army headquarters as authorities launch a brutal crackdown on yesterday's violent insurrection attempt.

Officers in riot gear and on horseback amassed at the encampment where supporters of Jair Bolsonaro stationed themselves after the storming of the government buildings which saw the yellow and green-clad rioters unleash chaos in the democratic chambers.

The 1,200 arrested today were transported in dozens of buses to a police station, on top of the 400 arrested yesterday, after a top judge ordered mass detentions and a thorough investigation into the mayhem, which saw Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court raided.

WNU Editor: A few observations.

Jair Bolsonaro and other Brazilian leaders have denounced yesterday's riot. The police who are mandated to protect these government buildings were clearly not ready for these protests. And as for the protestors themselves. They were not armed, and in many regions of Brazil that voted heavily against Lula there was no continuation of these protests. It looks like yesterday was a one-off.

As for Lula himself. He must feel both angry and insecure. He is leading a radicalized and deeply divided country, and I am sure he must know that he must be careful to not make a terrible situation into something worse.

Lula orders federal government to take control of policing in Brasília as extremists refuse to accept his presidency

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has ordered the federal government to take control of policing in Brazil’s capital, Brasília, after hundreds of hardcore supporters of the former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s congress, presidential palace and supreme court.

The massed attack was a stunning security breach that was immediately compared to the 6 January invasion of the US Capitol by followers of Donald Trump in 2021.

“What we are witnessing is a terrorist attack,” the news anchor Erick Bang announced on the GloboNews television network as word of the upheaval spread. “The three buildings have been invaded by coup-mongering terrorists.”

Brazil Markets Plunge On President Lula's First Full Day In Office

Reuters: Brazil markets tumble on Lula's first full day in office

BRASILIA, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Brazilian markets delivered a withering verdict on leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's first full day in office on Monday, after he pledged to prioritize social issues and ordered a budget-busting extension to a fuel tax exemption.

Lula's decision to extend the fuel tax exemption, which will deprive the Treasury of 52.9 billion reais ($9.9 billion) a year in fiscal income, was a stinging rebuke of his finance minister Fernando Haddad, a Workers Party (PT) loyalist who had said it would not be extended.

Haddad, who is seeking to dispel market fears that he might not maintain fiscal discipline, took office on Monday, pledging to control spending. "We are not here for adventures," he said.

Markets seemed unconvinced.

Outgoing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Makes Tearful Final Broadcast And Leaves The Country To Travel To The U.S.

VOA/Reuters: Brazil's Bolsonaro Lands in Florida, Avoiding Lula Handover

BRASiLIA, BRAZIL — Outgoing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro landed in Florida on Friday after delivering a teary message to his supporters less than two days before his fierce leftist rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is set to take office.

An official Brazilian plane landed in Orlando, Florida, late Friday, flight-tracking website FlightAware showed. Although Bolsonaro's destination has not been officially confirmed, his security staff were already in place in Florida.

Bolsonaro's exit from Brazil came after he repeatedly said he would not hand over the presidential sash to Lula at Sunday's inauguration, breaking with Brazil's democratic tradition. He may also face legal risks from remaining in Brazil as his presidential immunity expires when Lula takes office.

Lula da Silva Wins Brazil's Presidency

Daily Mail: Brazilian president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva calls for 'peace and unity' after beating far-Right rival Jair Bolsonaro in knife-edge election that split the nation after millions cast their votes... but will the 'Trump of the Tropics' concede defeat?

* Millions of voters in Brazil cast their vote on Sunday to decide whether to keep in far-right Bolsonaro

* It follows a divisive election campaign between Bolsonaro and former left-wing President Luiz Lula da Silva

* During the first half of the night's count, Bolsonaro had been leading with results on a knife-edge

* With 98.8% of the votes tallied, da Silva was guaranteed victory with 50.8% while Bolsonaro had 49.2%

* US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron have both congratulated Mr Da Silva

Brazil's veteran leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has urged for 'peace and unity' after being elected president on Sunday by a hair's breadth, beating his far-right rival Jair Bolsonaro in a down-to-the-wire poll that split the country in two.

The former president, who won a third term in office, stood neck and neck with incumbent Bolsonaro throughout a nail-biting count, however he emerged victorious with 50.83 percent of the vote to 49.17 percent for his rival, according to election authorities who declared him the victor.

All eyes are now on Bolsonaro and whether he will accept the result.

Polls Say Brazil's Presidential Election Too Close To Call

Reuters: Bolsonaro-Lula presidential race down to the wire in Brazil, polls show

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil's heated presidential race has tightened ahead of a Sunday vote, several opinion surveys showed on Saturday, with right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro eroding a slight advantage for leftist challenger Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in most polls.

Surveys by pollsters Datafolha and Quaest both showed Lula with 52% of valid votes against 48% for Bolsonaro, down from a 6 percentage-point lead three days prior, putting the incumbent in striking distance of a come-from-behind victory.

A survey by pollster MDA showed Lula's edge slipping to just 2 percentage points, equal to the margin of error for the poll commissioned by transport sector lobby CNT.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Embattled incumbent Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro closed out his underdog campaign last night in his home state of Rio de Janeiro. Thousands of enthusiastic Bolsonaro supporters, clad in Brazil’s yellow soccer jerseys, packed the plaza in Campo Grande, a western suburb of Rio de Janeiro.

Amidst scorching heat, which caused a few medical emergencies, popular Brazilian televangelist Silas Malafaia, and Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro warmed up the crowd. The gathering was part military muster, part campaign rally and part religious revival.

The run-off election will be held this Sunday.

Brazil's bitterly divisive presidential election will go to a runoff after far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro came in a close second to left-wing rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Electoral authorities confirmed the runoff election late Sunday night after President Bolsonaro beat expectations to finish a relatively close second to front-runner Lula.

Lula, the veteran leftist seeking a presidential comeback, had 47.9 per cent of the vote to 43.7 per cent for the far-right president with 97.2 per cent of polling stations reporting, according to official results from the Superior Electoral Tribunal, which said on its website a second round was now 'mathematically defined.'

Brazil’s upcoming presidential election has been shrouded by an unprecedented climate of tension and violence.

As the Oct. 2 vote approaches, episodes of harassment and attacks have intensified, with even neutral players like poll institutes turning into targets.

Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who aims to be reelected, is currently lagging in the main polls behind leftwing former President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva.

Brazil Covid-19 Coronavirus Cases Reach 2 Million, 75,000 Deaths

Reuters: Brazil coronavirus cases reach 2 million, doubling in less than a month

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 16 (Reuters) - Brazil on Thursday passed the 2 million confirmed coronavirus cases mark, with little sign that the rate of increase is slowing as anger grows over President Jair Bolsonaro's handling of the outbreak.

Just 27 days have passed since Brazil, which has the world's second-largest outbreak after the United States, reached one million cases. In recent weeks, there have been nearly 40,000 confirmed new cases per day, according to government figures.

By contrast, 43 days passed between 1 million and 2 million confirmed cases in the United States, where the spread of COVID-19 eased briefly in May before accelerating again in June, according to a Reuters tally.

On Thursday, confirmed cases in Brazil totaled 2,012,151, while deaths numbered 76,688.

Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro Tests Positive For Covid-19

Daily Mail: Jair Bolsonaro has coronavirus: Brazil's President - who has consistently dismissed his country's soaring pandemic - tells reporters he has tested POSITIVE.... then takes his mask OFF

Brazil's president Jair Bolsonaro today revealed he has tested positive for coronavirus - but dismissively removed his mask as he told reporters he felt 'perfectly well'.

Bolsonaro, who has repeatedly played down the severity of the virus and mingled with crowds of supporters in spite of social distancing rules, said his fourth coronavirus test had come back positive but insisted he had only mild symptoms.

'I'm well, normal. I even want to take a walk around here, but I can't due to medical recommendations,' the 65-year-old told reporters outside the presidential palace in Brasilia.

Coup Rumours Continue To Spread In Brazil

DNYUZ: Brazil Coup: Threats Rattle Bolsonaro as Coronavirus Deaths Surge

The threats are swirling around the president: Deaths from the virus in Brazil each day are now the highest in the world. Investors are fleeing the country. The president, his sons and his allies are under investigation. His election could even be overturned.

The crisis has grown so intense that some of the most powerful military figures in Brazil are warning of instability — sending shudders that they could take over and dismantle Latin America’s largest democracy.

But far from denouncing the idea, President Jair Bolsonaro’s inner circle seems to be clamoring for the military to step into the fray. In fact, one of the president’s sons, a congressman who has praised the country’s former military dictatorship, said a similar institutional break was inevitable.

WNU Editor: I doubt that the Brazilian military, or any military in the world, wants to assume power while this pandemic is rampaging the world. But what I do know is that this pandemic has clearly unnerved Brazil.
