In China, getting to a vaccine first would be a shot in the arm for its global image as a technology leader. In the US, an America-first vaccine could boost US President Donald Trump's reelection campaign.
The increasingly bitter United States-China rivalry is drawing international concern that politics will be put ahead of public health if either country is the first to come out with an effective vaccine for SARS-CoV-2.
Developers from the US and China combined have the most candidate vaccines currently in human trials. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are at least eight candidate vaccines moving forward in phase two of clinical evaluation.
