SCMP: China a ‘welcome friend’ for reconstruction in Afghanistan: Taliban spokesman

The Taliban sees China as a "friend" to Afghanistan and is hoping to talk to Beijing about investing in reconstruction work "as soon as possible", the group's spokesman Suhail Shaheen said on Wednesday.

In an exclusive interview with This Week in Asia, Suhail said the Taliban now controlled 85 per cent of the country and that it would guarantee the safety of Chinese investors and workers if they were to return.

"We welcome them. If they have investments of course we ensure their safety. Their safety is very important for us," he said by phone.

Suhail also said the Taliban would no longer allow China's Uyghur separatist fighters, some of whom had previously sought refuge in Afghanistan, to enter the country. The Taliban would also prevent al-Qaeda or any other terrorist group from operating there.

I would suspect arms sales is where China is a good friend. It will be interesting to see what happens here, China seems to be eager to invest large sums in many countries, many speculating for debt traps to ensure Chinese ownership of assets and land. But when it comes to Afganistan, if it comes time for China to collect, its more then likely they will be facing armed resistance rather then a court of law.

I don't believe, China will do much in this area, you could argue many reasons but simply put, China is a coward and unlike the US, or even Russia, if things turn sour, well China is not that far away and they could quickly spread deep into China.

It really seems like a no brainier, as the US pulls out, they leave a void ready to be exploited. China could step in, create mines, refinaries and more but do the people of aghanistan really want to work? I think when war is what you know, what your good at, laying them down to pick up a pickaxe will never happen.

China likes Taliban. Russia likes Taliban. What does that tell you?

China and the Taliban? isn't the Taliban Muslim fundamentalist? I know most of the Taliban can't read but you would think a few Uyghurs escaped and told them what is happening. China is probably the only country who could destroy the Taliban influence in Afghanistan. because they do not care what anybody else thinks and they control most of the world's media. When the power vacuum occurs in Afghanistan, and if China sees the country as vital to their end game, the Taliban will be fooked.
