Reuters: Chinese stock up on staples after government 'just in case' advice prompts confusion

BEIJING — Beijing shoppers stocked up on cabbage, rice and flour for the winter on Wednesday, after the government urged people to keep stores of basic goods in case of emergencies, though it assured them there were sufficient supplies after some panic-buying.

The Ministry of Commerce on Monday published a seasonal notice encouraging authorities to do a good job in ensuring food supplies and stable prices ahead of the winter, following a recent spike in the prices of vegetables and a growing outbreak of COVID-19.

They're afraid of retaliation, perhaps quite rightly.

Some think ridiculously included preparing for war as a reason. Sign of aging too much medication.

Anon (11:15),

You conveniently do not remember the CCP telling local authorities to stock up? If word got to the Western press, you know it leaked to the general population in China.

So why would the CCP tell the local authorities that? I do not know for sure, but I give war 3% to double digit probability. More like 3%. But who knows.

COP26 is over. So will China's electrical generation come back on line. Some think was that the decrease in electricity generation was a cheap stunt ahead of COP26. If it was not it leads to other worries. I though the 3 River Gorges dam was going to solve a lot of problems. It provides 16% of China's electricity. That is yuge!. So why are supplies of electricity so tight?

We live in a 5G and EDI world and there are so many energy and supply chain unknowns. Do you suppose that rancid fuck of a transportation secretary knows what EDI is?

When people get their backs up against the wall, they go to war. This happens often enough that it is not a black swan event. Case in point Hitler and Saddam Hussein. Hitler spent so much money rearming that the Germany economy was going to go bankrupt. Hussein's Iraq was bankrupt from the Iran-Iraq War. If China cannot supply enough electricity, there must be a lot of chinks (no pun intended) in their armor. Makes me wonder if they might attack Taiwan for some much needed largesse to maintain power.
