Notes From Poland: Poland condemns Ukraine’s commemoration of wartime nationalist leader Bandera
After officials and institutions in Ukraine – including the national parliament – marked the birth anniversary of nationalist leader Stepan Bandera, Polish government figures have criticised the commemoration of a man they see as responsible for the genocide of ethnic Poles and Jews.
Despite Poland and Ukraine having forged an extremely close alliance against Russian aggression this year, remembrance of World War Two history – and in particular the massacre of up to 100,000 Polish civilians by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) – continues to be a bone of contention.

The Ukrainians are putting forth a well deserved effort to rehabilitate Oskar Dirlewanger. Oskar was a true patriot and friend of all. He was wounded at least three times fighting for freedom and human rights. He led from the front. He truly was a man of the people and a symbol of the fight for freedom.
Like our glorious Azov battalion, he was a truly misunderstood individual who was only taking on the hardest jobs that no one else had the courage to do. This recognition by the Ukrainian government of Oskar is truly a case of corrective history and long over due.
The ceremony is now scheduled for January 30th in the Main Plaza. The Azov and Kraken Battalions will act as honor guard. President Zelinski will be in attendance and well as the distinguished members of the Ukrainian Government. A candlelight vigil will take place afterward. The pubic is invited.
SLAVA NATO! SLAVA AMERICA! SLAVA UKRAINE!
