Former CIA Director: Saudi Arabia Is Running Out Of Money

CNBC: Saudi Arabia is ‘gradually running out of money’ and needs IPO to fund reforms, ex-CIA chief says

* Saudi Arabia is going to float a small portion of its state oil giant Saudi Aramco, the most profitable company in the world, in December.
* The IPO was first flagged in 2016 by the now-Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
* The listing is seen as part of the crown prince’s “Vision 2030” program of economic and social reforms designed to diversify the kingdom’s economy and reduce its dependence on oil.

Saudi Arabia needs the initial public offering (IPO) of its state oil company to be successful as it needs to attract outside investment and, frankly, it needs the money, the former chief of the CIA David Petraeus told CNBC Thursday.

“It’s a fact that Saudi Arabia is gradually running out of money, they’d be the first to acknowledge that the sovereign wealth fund has been reduced, it’s somewhere below $500 billion now,” Gen. David Petraeus, who is currently chair of the KKR Global Institute, told CNBC’s Hadley Gamble in Abu Dhabi.

Former CIA Director Petraeus: It Would Be 'Suicide' For Iran To Start A War With US

CNN: David Petraeus: Iran's economy is in a 'tailspin' and it would be 'suicide' to start a war with US

Crushing sanctions from the United States have sent Iran's economy into a "tailspin," ex-CIA director David Petraeus told CNN Business.

Petraeus, who was also America's top general in the Middle East, warned that Iran's economy could continue to nosedive "as we tighten the screws a few more turns."

Despite soaring tensions between Washington and Tehran, the former CIA director isn't overly concerned about an all-out war breaking out.

"Certainly, if Iran were to precipitate that, it would be a suicide gesture," Petraeus said from the sidelines of the SALT Conference in Las Vegas. "It would be very, very foolhardy. And they know that."

Former General Petraeus: UK-US Military Cooperation Under Threat Due To EU Human Rights Laws

Daily Mail: Former US military chief David Petraeus who oversaw Iraq and Afghanistan wars claims Britain's military alliance with America could be under threat if the UK pursues veterans through the courts

* General David Petraeus said UK's military capability may be 'greatly diminished'
* Warned 'special relationship' may be at risk if UK continues down current path
* He added there was an 'overly expansive interpretation' of the ECHR laws

The former head of the US military has warned pursuing British veterans through the courts system could threaten the UK's military alliance with America.

General David Petraeus, who oversaw US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, said Britain's military capabilities could be 'greatly diminished' if human rights laws were not balanced against the laws of warfare.

Speaking on Thursday, Petraeus said: 'The very special relationship between our two militaries, which has been built over decades of serving shoulder-to-shoulder in the hardest tests of battle, could be put at risk by the present situation.'

Former General/CIA Director Petraeus Is Asked Whether The Iraq War Was Really Worth It

Gen. David H. Petraeus explains security improvements in Sadr City while giving an aerial tour of Baghdad Monday to Sen.'s Barack Obama, Jack Reed and Chuck Hagel. 21 July 2008 (Wikipedia).

Task & Purpose: We Asked Gen. Petraeus Whether The Iraq War Was Really Worth It. Here’s What He Said.

Fifteen years of war have turned Iraqi cities such as Ramadi, Fallujah, and Mosul into ruins. Iraq remains as divided as ever along sectarian lines, despite the deaths of more than 4,500 U.S. troops and untold numbers of Iraqis.

U.S. troops remain in Iraq to help advise and assist Iraqi forces as they try to prevent ISIS from launching yet another insurgency. Meanwhile, Iran has flooded the country with thousands of proxy fighters, giving it a large say in what the government of Iraq does post-ISIS.

This wasn’t the Iraq that was supposed to emerge when U.S. troops crossed the berm from Kuwait to Iraq in March 2003. Nor is this the Iraq that troops who trounced al Qaeda during the surge bled for. There are few tangible signs of success, and Iraq’s future is still unclear.

Why Are Failed U.S. Generals Being Rewarded?

General David Petraeus. Reuters.

Nick Turse, War Is Boring: Leaker, Speaker, Soldier, Spy

The charmed life of David Petraeus

I ran into David Petraeus the other night. Or rather, I ran after him.

It’s been more than a year since I first tried to connect with the retired four-star U.S. Army general and ex-CIA director — and no luck yet. On a recent evening, as the sky was turning from a crisp ice blue into a host of Easter-egg hues, I missed him again.

Led from a curtained “backstage” area where he had retreated after a midtown Manhattan event, Petraeus moved briskly to a staff-only room, then into a tightly packed elevator and momentarily out onto the street before being quickly ushered into a waiting late-model, black Mercedes S550.

And then he was gone, whisked into the warm New York night, companions in tow.

Pentagon Will Not Demote Retired General David Petraeus

Reuters: Retired general, ex-CIA chief David Petraeus to receive no further punishment

U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has decided not to impose further punishment on David Petraeus, a former U.S. military commander and CIA director who admitted sharing classified information with his mistress, according to a letter seen by Reuters.

The short letter was sent by Stephen Hedger, the assistant secretary of defense for legislative affairs, and the decision is in line with an Army review.

Petraeus resigned as head of the CIA in 2012 after it was revealed that he was having an affair with his biographer, Army Reserve officer Paula Broadwell. When he pleaded guilty to mishandling classified information, a court document signed by Petraeus and prosecutors said that in 2011, Petraeus illegally gave Broadwell access to official binders.

Retired Gen. David Petraeus' Defenders Come To His Defense

Photo from Stars and Stripes

Shane Harris and Nancy A. Youssef, Daily Beast: McCain and Top Dem Warn Pentagon: Petraeus Demotion May Be Illegal

The defense secretary wants to strip the retired general of a star after his offense against the Army. Critics say the move is more than gratuitous, it may be against the law.

Sen. John McCain, powerful chairman of the Armed Services Committee and former Republican presidential nominee, is riding to the rescue of retired Gen. David Petraeus, who is facing a retroactive demotion that McCain says could be illegal.

In a letter to Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, McCain cited “troubling media reports” that Carter might strip Petraeus of his fourth star, a rare form of discipline that could violate administrative law and McCain argued, would be “manifestly unreasonable and unfair.”

The Daily Beast first reported last week that Carter was considering the action, in light of Petraeus admitting to sharing classified information with his mistress and biographer, Paula Broadwell. Carter is said to view a demotion as sending a message throughout the military that even the most revered officers aren’t immune from punishment for their actions.

Pentagon Considering Retroactively Demoting Retired Gen. And Former CIA Director David Petraeus

General David Petraeus. Reuters.

Nancy A. Youssef & Shane Harris, Daily Beast: Exclusive: Pentagon May Demote David Petraeus

The Defense Secretary is looking to put the clamp down on misbehaving generals. Pentagon insiders say Petraeus could be the next general to face the consequences.

The Pentagon is considering retroactively demoting retired Gen. David Petraeus after he admitted to giving classified information to his biographer and mistress while he was still in uniform, three people with knowledge of the matter told The Daily Beast.

The decision now rests with Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, who is said to be willing to consider overruling an earlier recommendation by the Army that Petraeus not have his rank reduced. Such a demotion could cost the storied general hundreds of thousands of dollars—and deal an additional blow to his once-pristine reputation.

I have been following his career when he was in Iraq at the beginning. Former General And CIA Director David Petraeus: Keep U.S. Troops Out Of Syria

Fiscal Times: Retired US General Petraeus is warning the US to keep troops out of Syria

Retired U.S. Army General David Petraeus, the man who oversaw the (temporary) restoration of order in Iraq following the Sunni awakening and the subsequent surge of American troops there, doesn’t see much hope for a similar process in Syria.

In an interview with PBS host Charlie Rose, Petraeus warned against putting American troops on the ground in the war-torn country, saying the country “may be a Humpty Dumpty that can't be put back together again … One doesn't know what the various outcomes could be.”

Petraeus, who was forced to resign as CIA director after acknowledging that he supplied classified materials to his biographer, with whom he was having an extramarital affair, is still remembered by many as the most successful U.S. general in recent generations, even as the two wars for which he is best known, in Iraq and Afghanistan, resulted in states that can’t successfully govern themselves.

Are U.S. Special Forces Operating In Syria?

DoD Buzz: Petraeus Suggests U.S. Commandos Operating in Syria

Retired four-star Army Gen. David Petraeus on Tuesday returned to Capitol Hill for the first time since he resigned three years ago as CIA director amid revelations of an extramarital affair.

Much of his testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee focused on sweeping recommendations for changing the U.S. strategy in the Middle East, in part by having the U.S. military take on a bigger role in war-torn Syria.

But the former commander of U.S. troops in Iraq and later Afghanistan also included an interesting statement that seemed to corroborate what Army Gen. Lloyd Austin, head of Central Command, recently said regarding American commandos being on the ground in Syria.

WNU Editor: A commentator in this DoD post (adrestia) made the following obvious observation ....

.... Let me see if I have this correct. Petraeus plead guilty to mishandling classified information and documents, which should have revoked his security clearance, yet he has information on special mission troops in Syria, which should by all accounts be classified TOP SECRET.

Indeed.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus Advises On Islamic State Strategy

New York Times: David Petraeus Urges Stronger U.S. Military Effort in Syria

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration’s Syria policy came under sharp criticism Tuesday from one of its own former top military commanders and C.I.A. directors —David H. Petraeus — even as the White House is weighing new options for fighting the Islamic State in Syria.

Mr. Petraeus, in his first public testimony since resigning as director of the C.I.A. in 2012, told a Senate committee that the United States should establish safe havens in Syria where a moderate rebel force could operate and displaced Syrians could find refuge under the protection of American and allied air power.

WNU Editor: I am willing to bet that the White House ignored former CIA Director David Petraeus' Tuesday testimony on Syria .... especially the part where he says that the U.S. should launch air strikes against the Syrian regime of Assad.

Former CIA Director Petraeus Wants To Support Al Qaeda To Defeat The Islamic State

Shane Harris & Nancy A. Youssef, Daily Beast: Petraeus: Use Al Qaeda Fighters to Beat ISIS

To take down the so-called Islamic State in Syria, the influential former head of the CIA wants to co-opt jihadists from America’s arch foe.
Members of al Qaeda’s branch in Syria have a surprising advocate in the corridors of American power: retired Army general and former CIA Director David Petraeus.

The former commander of U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan has been quietly urging U.S. officials to consider using so-called moderate members of al Qaeda’s Nusra Front to fight ISIS in Syria, four sources familiar with the conversations, including one person who spoke to Petraeus directly, told The Daily Beast.

An array of friends in high places came to the aid of retired Army general and former CIA Director David Petraeus as he faced sentencing for providing classified data to his mistress, newly released court papers show.

Senator Lindsey Graham and former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair were among almost three dozen people who wrote a federal judge urging leniency for Petraeus. The former general was sentenced to two years probation after he signed a plea deal to avoid jail time.

The documents were filed under seal until a challenge by media organizations including Bloomberg News resulted in the papers being released Monday under the Freedom of Information Act.

Former CIA Director And Retired Four-Star General David Petraeus: U.S. 'Probably Losing' In Iraq

NEW YORK -- The U.S.-led coalition is keeping up air attacks on ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria. Yet, the Islamic terror group still controls important territory and cities, including Palmyra in Syria and both Mosul and Ramadi in Iraq.

Former CIA Director and retired General David Petraeus, who has commanded U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, spoke with Charlie Rose on the "CBS Evening News" about the challenges the coalition faces in the fight against ISIS.

The situation on the ground in Iraq and Syria is "worrisome," Petraeus said, calling the loss of Ramadi to ISIS "both an operational and a strategic setback, a significant one."

Former CIA Director David Petrateus Fined $100,000 And Sentenced 2 Years For Probabion Over Military Leak

Reuters: Ex-general, CIA chief Petraeus gets probation, $100,000 fine in leak case

(Reuters) - Former U.S. military commander and CIA director David Petraeus was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay a$100,000 fine but was spared prison time on Thursday after pleading guilty to mishandling classified information.

The retired four-star general apologized as he admitted in federal court in Charlotte, North Carolina, to giving the information to his mistress, who was writing his biography. He agreed under a plea deal to a misdemeanor charge of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material.

U.S. Magistrate Judge David Keesler raised the fine from the $40,000 that had been recommended to the maximum possible financial penalty for that charge, noting it needed to be higher to be punitive and reflect the gravity of the offense.

Kevin Maurer, Daily Beast: How The David Petraeus Prosecution Backfired

The former director of the CIA is getting off easy after leaking classified material to his mistress. Other leakers aren’t so lucky.

The sordid tale of marital infidelity, cyber-stalking, and spilled secrets surrounding former CIA director David Petraeus is scheduled to come to a close Thursday, when the former four-star general is sentenced for his crimes.

But Petraeus’s punishment will likely have lasting ramifications on future leak cases, national security lawyers said. They argue the government is cutting its own throat by offering him a more lenient sentence in the wake of harsher penalties to other leakers and creating a double standard that can be exploited by defense attorneys in future cases.

“This is a horrible choice by the government,” said Mark Zaid, a national security lawyer for more than two decades. “I think it is going to have a negative impact. The judges who are going to be truly objective are going to look at the Petraeus case. Going forward, it is going to hurt the government’s cases.”

Gen. David H. Petraeus, who commanded U.S. troops in Iraq during the 2007-2008 surge, was back in that country last week for the first time in more than three years. He was attending the annual Sulaimani Forum, a get-together of Iraqi leaders, thinkers and academics, at the American University of Iraq - Sulaimani in northern Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

In his most expansive comments yet on the latest crisis in Iraq and Syria, he answered written questions from The Post’s Liz Sly, offering insights into the mistakes, the prosecution and the prospects of the war against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, which he refers to by its Arabic acronym, Daesh.

Did Former CIA Director Petraeus Get Off Easy For Leaking Classified Information?

David A. Graham, The Atlantic: General Amnesty: Petraeus's Escape

The retired general will pay $40,000 and get two years' probation. Not all leakers are so lucky.

The Obama administration is against intelligence officials leaking classified information—but some conditions may apply.

If you're a CIA analyst who talks to reporters, you might end up serving 30 months in federal prison or facing more. Even a reporter could end up being named a co-conspirator by prosecutors. But if you're a decorated general, a former CIA director, and a former member of the Cabinet, you might get off with a $40,000 fine and two years of probation.
