Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Sentenced To Three Years In Jail

 

BBC News: Imran Khan: Pakistan ex-PM given three-year jail sentence 

Ex-Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for nationwide protests after he was handed a three-year jail sentence over corruption allegations. 

Mr Khan was found guilty of not declaring money earned from selling gifts he received in office. 

He denies the charges and says he will appeal. 

After the verdict, Mr Khan was taken into custody from his home in Lahore. In a pre-recorded statement posted after the verdict, he urged supporters to fight against the ruling. 

 "I have only one appeal, don't sit at home silently," he said in a video address posted to X, formerly known as Twitter. 

"I am struggling for you and the country and your children's future," he added. 

The former cricketer-turned-politician, 70, was elected in 2018, but was ousted in a no-confidence vote last year after falling out with Pakistan's powerful military.

BBC: Imran Khan: Pakistan's Supreme Court rules arrest was illegal 

Pakistan's Supreme Court has ruled that former prime minister Imran Khan's dramatic arrest on corruption charges this week was illegal. The court ordered Mr Khan's immediate release. 

His lawyers had argued that his detention from court premises in Islamabad on Tuesday was unlawful. 

At least 10 people have been killed and 2,000 arrested as violent protests have swept the country since he was held. Tuesday's arrest escalated growing tensions between him and the military. 

The opposition leader, ousted in a confidence vote in April last year, was brought to court on the orders of Pakistan's top judge. 

As Mr Khan arrived in court, media ran through the corridors to capture his first public appearance since he was arrested.

Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan has pleaded not guilty to corruption charges a day after his arrest sparked nationwide protests. 

Eight people have died nationwide in the protests and about 1,000 have been arrested, police say. 

The army is being deployed in some areas, and has issued a stern warning after crowds attacked its properties. 

Mr Khan's arrest dramatically escalated tensions between Mr Khan and the military at a time of economic crisis. 

Conviction would disqualify the former cricket star - prime minister from 2018 to 2022 - from standing for office, possibly for life. Elections are due later this year.

Video shows Khan standing at the front of an open top container truck during a protest march to demand snap elections when a gunman wielding an AK-47 fired at the politician. 

As the sound of bullets fill the air, a shocked Khan tried to take cover but he was shot in the foot. Khan's supporters can be seen surrounding around him, as people in the crowd can be heard screaming.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan has sparked fury after saying former Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was 'martyred'.

Khan, 67, made the hugely controversial comment in parliament when describing the troubled history between Pakistan and the US.

'The Americans came to Abbottabad and killed Osama bin Laden. Martyred him,' Khan said.

Anti-Drone Protest March In Pakistan

Pakistan's Imran Khan To Lead Anti-Drone Protest March -- BBC

Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan is to lead a march to the tribal areas this weekend to protest against US drone strikes.

The two-day march is due to start in Islamabad on Saturday and end with a rally in South Waziristan which has been a major focus of drone strikes.

However, it is not clear if authorities will allow the rally to take place.

Mr Khan, like many Pakistanis, says the attacks kill large numbers of civilians and foster support for militants.

Imran Khan: I Will Order Air Force To Shoot Down Drones -- The Telegraph

Imran Khan has promised to order the Pakistan Air Force to shoot down American drones if he takes power in a general election due in the first half of next year.

The former cricket captain is to lead peace activists into the country’s lawless tribal belt on Saturday to publicise the human toll of the CIA’s covert programme of missile strikes.

He has emerged as a serious contender for power after a decade and a half in the political wilderness since retiring from cricket and is now one of the country’s most outspoken critics of America’s use of unmanned aircraft.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he said the attacks were pushing young men in the arms of Taliban recruiters.
