Defence Blog: Russian Su-57 fighters cause mysterious sound that frightened Moscow residents. 

Numerous people reported hearing the strange high-pitched ringing sound during a rehearsal of the Victory Day Parade in Moscow, while the four newest Russian Su-57 Felon fighter jets appeared in the sky. 

A Moscow resident has described hearing a mysterious ‘scary’ noise in the skies above the city as ‘like something a real howl’. 

The Frelon reportedly continues to suffer from developmental issues, including the production of the new turbofan engines. The initial serial production versions lack the promised new-generation engines.

Someone – we aren’t exactly certain who – posted photos of a Russian Sukhoi Su-34 (NATO code name “Fullback”) twin-engine, two-seat tactical strike aircraft being towed along a Russian highway. If the aircraft were on a trailer, that may not be such a big deal. But this Su-34 is being pulled along on its own landing gear tires. Only in Russia…

Warzone/The Drive: Russian MiG-31 Foxhound Shot Down Its Wingman During Disastrous Live Fire Exercise

The incident raises concerns about Russian training procedures, as well as the capabilities of the MiG-31's radar and other key systems.

A new report, citing a leaked Russian government document, says that a crash of MiG-31 Foxhound in Siberia almost two years ago was actually the result of a friendly fire incident during a botched training exercise. In addition, the summary of the mishap suggests that there could be dangerous problems with the aircraft’s Zaslon-AM radar and Baget-55 fire control system that might increase the risk of more accidental shootdowns occurring in the future.

Baza, a relatively new Russian independent online investigative news outlet, revealed the new information on Apr. 23, 2019. The incident in question had occurred on Apr. 26, 2017, over the Telemba proving ground in Buryatia, a semi-autonomous republic within Russia that borders Mongolia. At the time, the Kremlin said that the plane had been on a training exercise, but offered no additional details about the mishap. Both of the Foxhound’s crew survived the incident.

Sputnik: Russian Tu-22M3 Bomber Crashes During Landing in Murmansk Region - Russian MoD

Two crew members of a Tu-22M3 have died and two more were injured during a hard landing in Russia's Murmansk region, the Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement.

"On 22 January, the Tu-22M3, after completing a scheduled training flight in the Murmansk region, made a hard landing when it encountered heavy snow… According to a report, two pilots were taken to a medical facility, where they’re receiving the necessary assistance. Two crew members were killed", the ministry said in a statement.

The doctors estimate the surviving pilots to be in grave condition, according to a source.

The Tu-22M3 is a supersonic, variable-sweep wing, long-range strategic and maritime strike bomber developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau and designed to destroy naval and ground targets at a distance of up to 2,200 km from home-based airfields with guided missiles and bombs.

Russian pilots honed their skills in gaining air superiority in case of a surprise attack during the drills in southern Russia. Footage from cameras strapped to fighter jets has captured the simulated high-intensity air fight.

A video released by the Russian Defense Ministry shows Su-30M2 and Su-27SM fighter jets being scrambled to repel an attack by a simulated enemy on the air fields in the southern Krasnodar Region. The video also shows the jets maneuvering at various altitudes and even flying upside-down at one point.

Sputnik: Downed Il-20 Was on Recon Mission Over Idlib De-Escalation Zone – Russian MoD

The Russian Hmeymim airbase had lost contact with the crew of the Russian Il-20 military aircraft late on Monday during the attack of four Israeli F-16 aircraft on Syrian targets in the province of Latakia.

"Our reconnaissance Il-20 aircraft with a crew of 15 on board was carrying out a reconnaissance mission over the Idlib de-escalation zone to determine the locations of storage and collection of unmanned aerial vehicles that fly out of the zone and strike different areas of Syria," Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stated at a meeting with senior military commanders.

Israeli F-16 jets attacked Syria under the cover of the Russian Il-20, assuming that the Syrian air defense forces would not act in this direction, Shoigu said.

Russia is in the final stages of assembling its new generation of pinpoint accurate supersonic strike bombers, ready for test flights later this month.

The Tu-22M3M is a 'deep moderisation' of the Tu-22M3 which Russia's air force has about 100 in service and used extensively in missions over Syria in support of the Assad regime.

The new planes can be navigated up to eight times better than the previous generation and target their improved missiles up to 10 times more accurately.

Russia’s future sixth-generation fighter as well as its next generation unmanned aircraft could be equipped with what is described as a “radio-photonic radar.”

“Its performance exceeds state-of-the-art electronics at carrier frequencies above two gigahertz, and the detection of non-cooperating aeroplanes confirms the effectiveness and expected precision of the system.”

Other researchers—including one from China—have followed up on the PHODIR team’s work to address some of the limitations of current photonic radar technology.

“The signal processing in the sampling receiver is still a main limitation of the operation frequency and bandwidth,” reads a paper by Chinese scientists Fangzheng Zhang, Qingshui Guo and Shilong Pan in Nature .

The multi-role fighters took part in the rare exercise in the country's southern Rostov region near Ukraine.

Some of Russia's Su-30M2 Flanker fighter jets and Su-34 Fullback fighter-bomber aircraft performed a series of touch-and-gos on a highway, with this reportedly being the first time those two types of aircraft have ever done so. Su-27 Flankers and Ka-27 Helix helicopters also took part in the exercise Rostov region, which included mock air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, as well as simulated combat search and rescue operations.

According to a statement from Russia's Ministry of Defense, "complex weather conditions" prevented pilots from actually landing and then taking off again, but there were no specific details about the conditions. TV Zvezda, the Russian military's official outlet, said it is rare for the country's combat aircraft to practice on roadways during the winter in general. The last such major instance of this type of training occurred during the massive Zapad 2017 drills with Belarus, when Russian Su-27 Flanker and MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jets, as well as Su-25 Frogfoot ground attack aircraft, performed similar maneuvers on a stretch of road near the Belorussian capital Minsk.

The fight was filmed by two GoPro cameras – one was installed on a cockpit canopy while the other was mounted on pilot's helmet.

The video clearly shows how the pilot launches air-to-air missiles – both forward and backwards – and fires the plane's autocannon.

Russian publication Business Online posted this picture earlier this year of what looks to be a wind-tunnel model of Russia’s planned new stealth bomber.

According to state-run Ria Novosti, the design for the PAK-DA strategic bomber was approved in April. “The development of the aircraft is going as planned,” Lt. Gen. Viktor Bondarev told the media outlet in April. “The outline of its design and characteristics has been approved and all relevant documents have been signed allowing the industry to start the development of systems for this plane.”
