EurAsian Times: Ukraine War: Russia Gets Fresh Batch Of Su-57 Stealth Fighters; RuAF To Buy A Total Of 76 Fifth-Gen Warplanes 

The Russian Defense Ministry has received a new batch of Su-57 ‘Felon’ fighter jets from the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Plant (owned by the United Aircraft Corporation).  The press service of UAC announced on December 28. 

In addition to the fifth-generation fighter aircraft, the company also delivered a batch of the Su-35S for the Russian Aerospace Forces. “KnAAZ manufactured and transferred to the Russian Defense Ministry another batch of serial fifth-generation Su-57 aircraft as part of the supply program of this year,” UAC said.  

Yuri Slyusar, the corporation’s general director, stated that the aircraft plant had fulfilled the current year’s production schedule for the Su-57 and multipurpose Su-35S fighters for the Russian Aerospace Forces.

Russian Su-57 fighters Cause Mysterious Sound Over The Skies Of Moscow During Victory Day Parade Rehearsals

 

Defence Blog: Russian Su-57 fighters cause mysterious sound that frightened Moscow residents. 

Numerous people reported hearing the strange high-pitched ringing sound during a rehearsal of the Victory Day Parade in Moscow, while the four newest Russian Su-57 Felon fighter jets appeared in the sky. 

A Moscow resident has described hearing a mysterious ‘scary’ noise in the skies above the city as ‘like something a real howl’. 

The Frelon reportedly continues to suffer from developmental issues, including the production of the new turbofan engines. The initial serial production versions lack the promised new-generation engines.

Mark Episkopos, National Interest: Could the F-35 Stealth Fighter Lose to Russia's Su-57 in a Dogfight?

One of Russia’s most prominent test pilots seems to think so. 

Former Soviet test pilot Magomed Tolboyev told Russian reporters earlier this week that Russia’s new Su-57 fighter can “easily” defeat Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fifth generation fighter in a one-on-one engagement: “Su-57 will kill [a F-35] easily, should they meet one on one. The F-35 cannot maneuver, it’s simply incapable. But it does have electronic might.” Tolboyev added that the F-35’s reliance on its electronics suite makes it especially susceptible to jamming. “This is why I oppose everything electronic.”

Russian combat pilots have mastered the new capabilities of the fifth-gen Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jets, the Defense Ministry reported. Footage of the test flights includes a rare firing of a missile while in a near-vertical climb.

The Su-57 is an advanced warplane which can speed straight up into the sky immediately after take-off, thanks to powerful engines and state-of-art controls needed to maintain stability during such a maneuver.

It’s one thing to design a warplane. And other thing to build it. That’s a truism Russian fighter-maker Sukohi is learning—or relearning—as it tries to fill the Kremlin’s order for 76 Su-57 stealth fighters.

Sukhoi builds the twin-engine Su-57 at the Komsomolsk-on-Amur aircraft plant in the Russian Far East. The factory previously built the non-stealthy Su-35—and learned some hard lessons.

Now, several years after building the Su-35, managers at Komsomolsk-on-Amur are setting up Su-57 production in the plant’s Shop 45.

One of Russia’s cutting-edge Su-57 fighter jets crashed during routing factory test flights near the Komsomolsk-on-Amur aircraft plant.

The pilot ejected safely and was picked up by a Mi-8 rescue helicopter. The crashed jet's backboxes are yet to be recovered.

The aircraft involved in the incident belonged to the manufacturer and was undergoing a series of flight tests some 110 kilometers of Dzyomgi air base in Russia's Far Eastern Khabarovsk region.

The latest Russian-5th generation "stealth" combat aircraft, the Sukhoi Su-57, was assigned an official NATO reporting name this week: "FELON"

NATO Reporting names provide a convenient and recognizable English language moniker for communicating Russian aircraft types. The names are assigned to equipment including weapons systems, ships, ground vehicles and aircraft by members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). These code names or reporting names are used in radio communication and in common usage among westerners, including enthusiasts.

Russia’s first fifth generation fighter, the Sukhoi Su-57, has entered serial production. Under the terms of a contract signed last June United Aircraft Corporation will produce 76 Su-57s, with the first jet likely to enter service before the end of 2019.

First sighted in 2010, the Su-57 takes its name from the famous Sukhoi Design Bureau. The Su-57 was a previously unknown design and its appearance took the West by surprise. The Su-57 is described as a “fifth-generation fighter,” a term referring to to the fifth-generation of post World War II fighter jets. Fifth-generation fighter jets typically include a stealthy design, the ability to cruise at speeds of Mach 1 or greater, and a powerful radar and the ability to send and receive data with friendly forces in a networked environment.

Michael Peck, National Interest: Why Is Russia Turning Its Su-57 Stealth Fighter Into A Ship-Killer?

Russia is designing an anti-ship missile for its Su-57 stealth fighter.

But is hunting ships the best mission for such an advanced aircraft?

Deputy Defense Minister Alexey Krivoruchko made the announcement while visiting the Detal Design Bureau, which is developing a new anti-ship missile, according to Russian news agency TASS.

“Today the enterprise is working on developing an active homing warhead for the promising anti-ship missile that is planned to be carried by the Su-57 fighter as well," Krivoruchko said.

“A working meeting was held on the premises of the Detal Design Bureau to discuss the issue of signing a contract with Tactical Missiles Corporation on acquiring the entire range of air-launched weapons for the Su-57 fighter jets,” TASS said.

Warzone/The Drive: Half Of Russia's Su-57 Fleet Escorted Putin To Military Test Facility Ahead Of Pompeo Meeting (Updated)

The Russian leader very publicly inspected some of the country's most advanced aircraft and air defense systems.

Russian President Vladimir Putin flew to the country's southwestern region today on board his IL-96-300PU presidential plane with an escort of six Su-57s, roughly half of the total number of the advanced fighter jets that the country has in total. Putin made the grand display as he traveled to the region to inspect various military units before departing for Sochi to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Putin arrived at the 929th Chkalov State Flight-Test Center in Russia's southwestern Astrakhan region early on May 14, 2019. The facility is the Russian military's largest research and development site for advanced aircraft, as well as air defense systems.

Russia may attempt to fill the vacuum created by a U.S. embargo on F-35 exports to Turkey with an export variant of its Su-57 advanced fighter.

I don't think anyone would claim it came as a surprise, but nonetheless, the U.S. deciding to hold back NATO ally Turkey's F-35 order and potentially curtailing its industrial involvement in the program is a major development. It’s also one that is nearly certain to push Turkey further into Moscow’s orbit and could offer Russia a unique and much-needed opportunity to export their Su-57 advanced fighter.

* Russia has been using war-torn Syria as a testbed for its most advanced stealth fighter — the Su-57.
* The aircraft has flown ten sorties over Syria, the Russian Ministry of Defense said Monday in a statement accompanying the first official video of the aircraft's activities in Syria.
* The Russian fifth-generation fighter, which is still in development, is meant to rival the proven US F-35 and F-22 stealth fighters.

A new video from the Russian defense ministry shows the country's most advanced stealth fighter flying sorties in Syria.

Fifth-generation Su-57 stealth fighters have flown 10 sorties over war-torn Syria, the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement accompanying the footage, the first official video to publicly highlight the aircraft's activities in Syria.

Satellite images from February first indicated that Russia had deployed Su-57 fighters to Khmeimim Air Base in Latakia, Syria. The Ministry of Defense later confirmed the deployment. The Russians are admittedly using the bloody civil war in Syria to test some of their latest weapons. The plane has a "need to be tested in combat conditions, in conditions of resistance," Russian officials previously explained.

Franz-Stefan Gady, The Diplomat: Russia Will Not Mass-Produce 5th Generation Stealth Fighter Jet

Mass-production of the Su-57 is not needed now, according to Russia’s deputy defense minister.

Russia has no plans for mass-producing the PAK/FA Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet, the country’s first indigenously designed and built fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft, Russian Deputy Defense Minister, Yuri Borisov, said during an appearance on Russian television on July 2.

In the interview, the deputy defense minister spoke about the aircraft’s recent deployment to Syria, but also noted that serial production of the Su-57 does not make sense at this stage and would only occur once the Russian Air Force’s older fourth-generation fighter jets lag behind their Western equivalents.

“The plane has proven to be very good, including in Syria, where it confirmed its performance and combat capabilities,” Borisov said. “You know that today the Su-57 is considered to be one of the best aircrafts produced in the world. Consequently, it does not make sense to speed up work on mass-producing the fifth-generation aircraft.”

WNU Editor: Too many problems to solve. But more importantly .... there is not enough money in the defense budget to mass produce these jets. This is a big blow to the Russian defense industry, to the Russian airforce, and to Russian President Putin. I am just surprised that they are making this announcement on the eve of President Trump's and President Putin's summit and not after.

Made by an unmanned aerial vehicle, the footage showed a pair of Su-57s carrying out an attack on ground targets of a simulated enemy.
