The Last Refuge: Why is Obama Panicking Now? – The Importance of Understanding Political Surveillance In The Era of President Obama…
Why is former President Obama calling forth all his defensive resources now? Why did former national security advisor Susan Rice write her cya letter? Why have republicans in congress not been willing to investigate the true origins of political surveillance? What is the reason for so much anger, desperation and opposition from a variety of interests?
With the release of recent transcripts and the declassification of material from within the IG report, the Carter Page FISA and Flynn documents showing FBI activity, there is a common misconception about why the intelligence apparatus began investigating the Trump campaign in the first place. Why was Donald Trump considered a threat?

Former Deputy And Acting Director Of The FBI Andrew McCabe Facing Criminal Charges
FOX News: US attorney recommends proceeding with charges against McCabe, as DOJ rejects last-ditch appeal
U.S. Attorney Jessie Liu has recommended moving forward with charges against Andrew McCabe, Fox News has learned, as the Justice Department rejects a last-ditch appeal from the former top FBI official.
McCabe -- the former deputy and acting director of the FBI -- appealed the decision of the U.S. attorney for Washington all the way up to Jeffrey Rosen, the deputy attorney general, but he rejected that request, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The potential charges relate to DOJ inspector general findings against him regarding misleading statements concerning a Hillary Clinton-related investigation.

U.S. Democrats Move To Block The Declassification Of Intelligence Documents That Were Used To Justify Warrants To Spy On The Trump Campaign

Washington Examiner: Adam Schiff calls on Dan Coats to tell him if William Barr declassifies over intelligence community objections
House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff pressed the intelligence community to let him know if Attorney General William Barr declassifies any documents pertaining to the Russia investigation over their objections.
Last week, President Trump delegated Barr "full and complete authority to declassify information" related to the origins of the federal investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. The White House also instructed several agencies to cooperate with Barr's inquiry, including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Defense Department, the State Department, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

WNU Editor: I am still waiting for the evidence that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff says he has that President Trump colluded with the Russians. But this move by him to block the release of the intelligence that was used in justifying the issuing of warrants to spy on the Trump campaign is unfortunate, but also not surprising. The Congressman knows what is coming down. That Democrat officials in the Obama administration green-lighted a surveillance operation on the Trump campaign on the slimmest of evidence (if you want to call it evidence), and they did so for political reasons. This move to block this process by House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff is also going to fail. The Department of Justice has a lot of power and independence, and the Attorney General definitely appears determined to get to the bottom of this story when it became clear to him that he was (and is) getting conflicted information .... Barr has not received 'satisfactory' answers from intelligence community in Russia probe origins review (FOX News). I also see many parallels to Watergate here. The principles in this entire affair are now turning on each other, because they know that subpoenas and grand juries are their future. And like Watergate it took over a year before trials and convictions were meted out to government officials involved. I can see the same thing happening here.

CBS News: Does Barr think Obama officials committed treason? "Not as a legal matter, no"
Attorney General William Barr said he does not think some Obama-era Justice Department officials who oversaw the Russia investigation committed treason.
"Not as a legal matter, no," Barr told CBS News chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford when asked if he believed senior officials in the Obama administration committed treason, an accusation Mr. Trump has repeatedly made.
Pressed on whether he had concerns about the way these officials conducted the investigation into Russian interference in U.S. elections and possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Moscow, the attorney general replied, "Yes."

WNU Editor: Many in the media have brought up the differences between the attorney general and the special counsel on this point .... Mueller, Barr give different explanations for not charging Trump (CBS). And some are even claiming that the Attorney General perjured himself to Congress by lying .... Fox News Reports: William Barr 'Emphatically' Lied To Congress (Crooks and Liars). The problem with this claim is that the Attorney General made his remarks under oath, and in the discussions that he had with the Special Console there were always people in the room (including the Assistant Attorney General Rosenstein) who witnessed and have since collaborated the Attorney General's testimony. On this issue alone it is important that former Special Console Robetr Mueller be brought in to testify under oath, and to receive questions from Congress explaining why he differs with the Attorney General. Making an 8 minute speech and then running out of the room while refusing to take questions is not good enough.

Byron York, Washington Examiner: As Barr mulls declassification, a familiar tune from critics
In February 2018, the House Intelligence Committee released the so-called Nunes memo. In four pages, the document, from the committee's then-chairman Rep. Devin Nunes, revealed much of what the public knows today about the FBI's reliance on the Steele dossier in pursuing since-discredited allegations that the Trump campaign and Russia conspired to fix the 2016 election. Specifically, it revealed that the FBI included unverified material from the dossier in applications to a secret spy court to win a warrant to wiretap Trump foreign policy volunteer adviser Carter Page.
All that was classified. To release it, the committee appealed to President Trump, who made a declassification order. That is the only way Americans know about the Page warrant. From that knowledge came later revelations about the FBI's use of confidential informants and undercover agents to get information on Trump campaign figures.

U.S. Attorney General Barr Vows To Uncover 'Exactly What Happened' With Russia Probe
FOX News: Bill Barr vows to uncover 'exactly what happened' with Russia probe, says explanations have been 'inadequate'
Attorney General Bill Barr, in an exclusive interview with Fox News, said the country must know “exactly what happened” with counterintelligence activities conducted during the 2016 election -- and he is determined to get to the bottom of the case.
In his first interview since becoming attorney general, Barr spoke to “America’s Newsroom” host Bill Hemmer during a visit to El Salvador for meetings with law enforcement officials. In pointed terms, he fired back at Democrats who have castigated him over his handling of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report -- calling Speaker Nancy Pelosi's charge that he lied to Congress "laughable" and dismissing an attempt to hold him in contempt of Congress.

A Dispute Among Former FBI-CIA Officials Erupts On Who Pushed The Steele Dossier
FOX News: Dispute erupts over whether Brennan, Comey pushed Steele dossier, as DOJ probe into misconduct begins
A high-level dispute over which senior government officials pushed the unverified Steele dossier amid efforts to surveil the Trump campaign has broken out into the open again, after it emerged that Attorney General William Barr appointed a U.S. attorney to examine the origins of the Russia investigation and determine if the FBI and DOJ's actions were "lawful and appropriate."
Sources familiar with the records told Fox News that a late-2016 email chain indicated then-FBI Director James Comey told bureau subordinates that then-CIA Director John Brennan insisted the dossier be included in the intelligence community assessment on Russian interference, known as the ICA.

Update: FBI-CIA Dispute Erupts Over Whether Comey Or Brennan Pushed Steele Dossier (Zero Hedge)
WNU Editor: My gut tells me that it is former CIA Director John Brennan who pushed the dossier. Former FBI Director Comey never struck me as someone who thought strategically or was as vested politically as the former CIA Director was with the Obama administration, its legacy, and a continuation of that legacy into a Clinton administration. One other piece of information that makes me believe that it is the former CIA Director who pushed this dossier comes from former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos. He strongly believes that it was the CIA and not the FBI who tried to use and manipulate him to implicate the Trump campaign with Russia .... Papadopoulos: Informant Who Tried To "Seduce" Me During 2016 Campaign Was CIA Not FBI (RCP). U.S. Attorney General To Name Connecticut Prosecutor To Investigate Russia Probe's Origins
William Barr testifies at the US Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing [Kevin Lamarque/Reuters]
New York Times: Barr Assigns U.S. Attorney in Connecticut to Review Origins of Russia Inquiry
WASHINGTON — Attorney General William P. Barr has assigned the top federal prosecutor in Connecticut to examine the origins of the Russia investigation, according to two people familiar with the matter, a move that President Trump has long called for but that could anger law enforcement officials who insist that scrutiny of the Trump campaign was lawful.
John H. Durham, the United States attorney in Connecticut, has a history of serving as a special prosecutor investigating potential wrongdoing among national security officials, including the F.B.I.’s ties to a crime boss in Boston and accusations of C.I.A. abuses of detainees.
His inquiry is the third known investigation focused on the opening of an F.B.I. counterintelligence investigation during the 2016 presidential campaign into possible ties between Russia’s election interference and Trump associates.

Former FBI Chief Of Counterespionage Believed The CIA Was Leaking To The Media On The Trump-Russia Investigation

Former FBI agent Peter Strzok appeared to believe the CIA was leaking to the media about the Trump campaign and suspicious ties to the Russians and was involved in the investigation far earlier than previously known, according to text messages highlighted by a pair of Republican senators on Monday.
In a letter to intelligence community Inspector General Michael Atkinson, Sens. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, quoted Strzok saying in December 2016 that “our sisters have begun leaking like mad. ... President Trump Says He Will Declassify Everything Related To The Obama Administration's 'Spying' Of His Campaign

New York Times: FBI Sent An Agent To Spy On A Trump Aide In 2016
George Papadopoulos, a former Trump campaign aide, was the target of an F.B.I. investigation into connections between the campaign and Russia.CreditCreditTom Brenner for The New York Times
New York Times: F.B.I. Sent Investigator Posing as Assistant to Meet With Trump Aide in 2016
WASHINGTON — The conversation at a London bar in September 2016 took a strange turn when the woman sitting across from George Papadopoulos, a Trump campaign adviser, asked a direct question: Was the Trump campaign working with Russia?
The woman had set up the meeting to discuss foreign policy issues. But she was actually a government investigator posing as a research assistant, according to people familiar with the operation. The F.B.I. sent her to London as part of the counterintelligence inquiry opened that summer to better understand the Trump campaign’s links to Russia.
The American government’s affiliation with the woman, who said her name was Azra Turk, is one previously unreported detail of an operation that has become a political flash point in the face of accusations by President Trump and his allies that American law enforcement and intelligence officials spied on his campaign to undermine his electoral chances. Last year, he called it “Spygate.”
The decision to use Ms. Turk in the operation aimed at a presidential campaign official shows the level of alarm inside the F.B.I. during a frantic period when the bureau was trying to determine the scope of Russia’s attempts to disrupt the 2016 election, but could also give ammunition to Mr. Trump and his allies for their spying claims.

Update: FBI sent undercover investigator to meet with Papadopoulos in 2016: report (The Hill)
WNU Editor: This is an explosive story and a follow up on a previous New York Time's report from last year .... New York Times Reveals How U.S. Intelligence And The Justice Department Targeted And Spied On The Trump Campaign During The Election Campaign (May 17, 2018). The New York Times is trying to rationalize why the FBI sent an agent to spy on a Trump aide, and in the process giving them cover for why they did it. Good luck on that. This is (again) another validation on previous claims by President Trump and his allies that American law enforcement and intelligence officials spied on his campaign to undermine his electoral chances. So why did the New York Times release this story today? To get ahead of Attorney General Barr's upcoming investigation on what precipitated the investigation/spy operation on the Trump campaign. To say that I smell panic in those who are afraid on what Attorney General Barr is going to find is an understatement.
Update #2: The MI6 connection via through the use of Cambridge professor Stefan A. Halper in this FBI operation is intriguing. Did MI6 sanctioned this operation, and what role did the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community specifically play in using Professor Stefan A. Halper in this operation? And then there is this interesting Pentagon connection to Stefan A. Halper .... Pentagon Analyst Stripped Of His Security Clearances After Questioning Exorbitant Contracts for Trump-Campaign Spy Stefan Halper (August 17, 2018).
Update #3: George Papadopoulos has already commented on this article. He agrees with the New York Times, but is saying that it was not an FBI agent that was sent to spy on him, but a CIA agent (link here). A direct tie to former CIA Director John Brennan? And if true did he approve it?

Former FBI Director Comey Defends The Use Of Informers
Facts matter. The FBI’s use of Confidential Human Sources (the actual term) is tightly regulated and essential to protecting the country. Attacks on the FBI and lying about its work will do lasting damage to our country. How will Republicans explain this to their grandchildren?— James Comey (@Comey) May 23, 2018
Dangerous time when our country is led by those who will lie about anything, backed by those who will believe anything, based on information from media sources that will say anything. Americans must break out of that bubble and seek truth.— James Comey (@Comey) May 23, 2018
CNBC: Comey attacks Republicans, defends FBI's alleged use of Trump campaign informant in pair of scathing tweets
* Former FBI Director James Comey says the lies and attacks on the FBI "will do lasting damage to our country."
* Comey singled out Republicans in positions of political leadership, suggesting they were attacking the FBI dishonestly.
* Comey does not mention Trump by name, but his tweets arrived on the heels of a Twitter diatribe from Trump about an alleged informant who reportedly talked to multiple Trump campaign associates.
Former FBI Director James Comey on Wednesday weighed in for the first time on reports of an informant investigating President Donald Trump's campaign, saying that lies and attacks on the investigative agency "will do lasting damage to our country."
In a pair of tweets, Comey defended the use of confidential human sources — "the actual term," he said — as being "essential to protecting the country."
Comey then went on the offensive, suggesting that Republicans were attacking the FBI dishonestly.
"How will Republicans explain this to their grandchildren?" he asked.

WNU Editor: This defense of using informers from former FBI Director Comey follows on the heels on what former Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper said yesterday when he admitting that spies/informers were used against the Trump campaign .... Clapper: Trump Should Be "Happy" That The FBI Was "Spying" On His Campaign (RCP). And the defense that James Clapper used is that they wanted to make sure that there were no Russian agents in the Trump campaign. But the fact that no one told then candidate Trump on what was happening, nor have they provided the evidence and reasons on why they wanted informer(s) in the Trump campaign in the first place, tells me that these informer(s) were actually placed there to find collusion and/or to entrap Trump officials in the campaign. My gut is telling me that this had nothing to do with protecting "President Trump" .... and more of an attempt to "get him". Currently .... the main stream's media coverage of this story is to say that there is no evidence of spying .... while ignoring what both Clapper and Comey have already admitted. As one who always studies the media .... this is as surreal as you can get. As to where will all of this all go from here .... an Inspector General investigation is not enough to uncover what happened .... a Special Counsel will be needed. On a side note .... who would have predicted last year that we would be here today. From Russian collusion with the Trump campaign to .... admissions from top Obama administration officials that they had an informer/spy in the Trump campaign. And speaking of President Obama ..... not a peep from him on all of these recent revelations.
Update: So the current media narrative is that this informer was to protect President Trump. Just curious ... why were there no informers in the Hillary campaign to "protect her"? After-all .... it was her server and the servers of the Democrat Party that were hacked. Not Trump or the Republican Party. If this media narrative is true the answer (to me) is then obvious .... they did not "protect" the Hillary Clinton campaign because they either knew that there was no Russian collusion .... or they were the ones who were doing it. And here is an easy prediction .... there is going to be another media narrative on this whole story by tomorrow.
