'Doomsday Clock' Is Now At 90 Seconds To Midnight

BBC: Doomsday Clock signals highest ever peril level

The symbolic Doomsday Clock has moved closer than ever to midnight, declaring humanity perilously close to catastrophe.

The clock, set to 90 seconds to midnight, marks how close our planet is to complete annihilation because of man made actions.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) said the clock moved, in large part, because of the war in Ukraine. The idea began in 1947 to warn humanity of the dangers of nuclear war.

The hands of the clock are moved closer to or further away from midnight based on the scientists' reading of existential threats at a particular time. Midnight marks the theoretical point of annihilation.

The decision is made by the BAS science and security board, which includes 13 Nobel Laureates.

This year the announcement was made available in Ukrainian and Russian as well as English, due to the war in Ukraine.

Doomsday Clock To Be Updated Next Week

Newsweek: Doomsday Clock To Be Updated for First Time Since Putin Invaded Ukraine

Scientists will announce whether they believe mankind is any closer to self-annihilation at the unveiling of the 2023 Doomsday Clock next week.

Last year, the clock remained at 100 seconds to midnight, where it has been since 2020, but tensions between Russia and Ukraine this year could edge the minute hand even closer to 12 o'clock.

The Doomsday Clock is a visual representation of just how close humanity is to destroying life as we know it, with midnight representing the eruption of a global catastrophe.

For The Third Year In A Row The Doomsday Clock Stands At 100 Seconds To Midnight

Daily Mail: Humanity is '100 seconds from annihilation': Doomsday clock remains unchanged for the third year in a row because the 'world is no safer than it was last year at this time'

* Scientists unveiled the Doomsday clock for the 75th time since 1947

* The clock remains at 100 seconds to midnight for the third year in a row

* This is because the 'world is no safer than it was last year at this time'

* Nuclear war risks, a lack of action toward climate change, the spread of misinformation and conflict in space are part of Thursday's decision

The Doomsday clock will remain at 100 seconds to midnight for the third year in a row because the 'world is no safer than it was last year at this time.'

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists unveiled the clock on Thursday, which keeps track of the likelihood of humanity's annihilation, for the 75th time since it first debuted in 1947.

Since then, the group has annually announced if the Doomsday Clock's minute hand has moved closer to or away from midnight - the marker for disaster.

'Doomsday Clock' Stuck At 100 Seconds To Midnight

AFP: 'Doomsday Clock' stuck at 100 seconds to midnight

The "Doomsday Clock" illustrating the perils facing the planet and mankind will remain at 100 seconds to midnight this year amid the threats of the coronavirus pandemic, nuclear war and climate change.

"The hands of the Doomsday Clock remain at 100 seconds to midnight, as close to midnight as ever," Rachel Bronson, president of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, said in a statement.

"The lethal and fear-inspiring Covid-19 pandemic serves as a historic 'wake-up call,' a vivid illustration that national governments and international organizations are unprepared to manage the truly civilization-ending threats of nuclear weapons and climate change," Bronson said.

Doomsday Clock Hits 100 Seconds To Midnight

Daily Mail: Doomsday clock moves the closest to midnight in its 73-year history: Apocalypse predictor ticks forward twenty seconds amid rising fears from nuclear tensions and the threat of climate change

The clock is at 100 seconds to midnight, the closest it has been since it launched
It has been at two minutes to midnight since 2017 in part due to climate change
The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists say there are multiple 'end of days' threats
They say 'new norms of behaviour' are needed to push the clock hands back

The Doomsday clock has ticked forwards 20 seconds and stands just 100 seconds to midnight - the closest in its 73-year history - due to increased nuclear tensions and climate change, bringing us closer to the apocalypse than ever before.

The clock was founded by the US scientists involved in the Manhattan Project that developed the world's first nuclear weapons during World War 2.

It is a symbolic countdown designed to represent the time to a possible global catastrophe and is maintained by scientists including 16 Nobel laureates.

The group say the change - which is the closest the clock has ever been to the end of days - is due to the dual threats of nuclear war and climate change.

Doomsday Clock Stays At Two Minutes To Midnight

BBC: Doomsday Clock frozen at two minutes to apocalypse

The "new abnormal" the world is facing from risks like nuclear war and climate change has led the symbolic Doomsday Clock to be frozen at the closest it has ever been to midnight.

The clock, created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) in 1947, intends to warn of impending disasters.

Its 2019 setting was announced on Thursday - staying in the same perilous position it was set at last year.

The BAS has warned we are "normalising a very dangerous world".

It marks only the third year the clock has been so close to midnight - first reaching the position in 1953 after the US and the Soviet Union tested highly destructive hydrogen bombs.

"Doomsday Clock" Moves Closer To Midnight

USA Today: The Doomsday Clock just ticked closer to midnight

Scientists moved the hands of the symbolic "Doomsday Clock" closer to midnight on Thursday amid increasing worries over nuclear weapons and climate change.

The clock is now two minutes to midnight. “Because of the extraordinary danger of the current moment, the Science and Security Board today moves the minute hand of the Doomsday Clock 30 seconds closer to catastrophe," said Rachel Bronson, president of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. "This is the closest the Clock has ever been to Doomsday, and as close as it was in 1953, at the height of the Cold War.”

Each year, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a non-profit group that sets the clock, decides whether the events of the previous year pushed humanity closer or farther from destruction.

Doomsday Clock Has Been Moved Closer To 'Midnight'. The Election Of Donald Trump Is Being Blamed

Washington Post: The Doomsday Clock just moved again. It’s now two-and-a-half minutes to ‘midnight.’

It's now two-and-a-half minutes to “midnight,” according to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, which warned Thursday that the end of humanity may be nigh.

The group behind the famed Doomsday Clock announced at a news conference that it was adjusting the countdown to the End of it All by taking away 30 seconds — the closest the clock has been to Doomsday since 1953, after the United States tested its first thermonuclear device, followed months later by the Soviet Union's hydrogen bomb test.

In announcing that the Doomsday Clock was moving 30 seconds closer to the end of humanity, the group noted that in 2016, “the global security landscape darkened as the international community failed to come effectively to grips with humanity’s most pressing existential threats, nuclear weapons and climate change.”

But the organization also cited the election of Donald Trump in changing the symbolic clock.

WNU editor: So the Doomsday Clock is now closer to midnight than what it was during the height of the Cold War .... and the reason why is because of President Trump. Being one who grew up during the Cold War .... and being one who is well aware of the rhetoric of the time .... President Trump's remarks on nuclear weapons do not even come close to what was being said at the time (i.e. Khrushchev's 'I will bury you speech', to President Kennedy's remarks during the Cuban Missile Crisis). To say that this group has become politicised is an understatement .... too bad .... the idea of the Doomsday Clock was a good one when it first came out (i.e. to make the world aware on the dangers of nuclear weapons). But like everything else in today's world, everything is becoming politicised to express one's personal political opinions .... and in turn they have lost their credibility.

Doomsday Clock: It Is Still Three Minutes To Midnight

Daily Mail: World is closest it has been to catastrophe since the Cold War: Doomsday Clock remains at just three minutes to midnight

* Doomsday Clock is a symbolic countdown to possible global catastrophe
* There has been progress in the Iran nuclear and the Paris climate deals
* But concern remains over the continuing conflict in Ukraine and Syria
* Experts are also worried about movement of short-to-medium range nuclear weapons by Russia, as well as ongoing global warming

The minute hand on the symbolic Doomsday Clock remains at three minutes to midnight, marking the direst setting since the height of the Cold War.

'Three minutes (to midnight) is too close. Far too close',' the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists said.

The clock reflects how vulnerable the world is to catastrophe from nuclear weapons, climate change and new technologies, with midnight symbolising apocalypse.

Recent progress in the Iran nuclear agreement and the Paris climate deal 'constitute only small bright spots in a darker world situation full of potential for catastrophe', scientists said.

Bulletin Of The Atomic Scientists To Announce On Wednesday How Close Is The Doomsday Clock To Midnight

News.com.au: Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists to announce what time it is on the Doomsday Clock

WE will find out how close we are to Armageddon when the world’s most revered scientists gather in Washington DC to announce what time it is on the Doomsday Clock.

The symbolic timekeeper of our impending destruction is currently set at three minutes to midnight — the closest we have ever been to that dreaded hour since the clock began ticking in 1947.

The clock is a universally recognised indicator of our vulnerability to catastrophe from nuclear weapons, emerging technologies and more recently, global warming. We ignore it at our peril.

On Wednesday morning (1.30pm Tuesday in America), the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists will reveal whether the minute hand will be adjusted, at a live press conference in Washington DC.

Doomsday Clock Set To 5 Minutes To Midnight

'Doomsday Clock' Still At Five To Midnight, Scientists Warn -- RT

The doomsday clock – a theoretical device that purports to tell us how close we are to a nuclear apocalypse – has frozen at five minutes to midnight, unchanged from last year. Physicists tell the head of the UN there is little reason to move it back.

The visual metaphor has held its appeal for more than 60 years now. The hands of time are moved in accordance with the analyses of a special board of scientists who ponder international threats, especially those having to do with nuclear armaments.

While a team of physicists writing to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted some positive developments in 2013 – including successful talks on Iran’s nuclear program, and the fact that overall there has been a reduction in nuclear armaments worldwide – they decided there was still little hope for jubilation:
