A British ISIS suicide bomber has been revealed as a former Guantanamo prisoner who was handed £1million in taxpayers' money as compensation before fleeing to Syria.

UK national Jamal Udeen al-Harith was photographed moments before blowing himself up in an attack on a military facility near Mosul in Iraq.

Shortly after detonating the explosive-laden car near an army base, ISIS released a statement revealing al-Harith had been fighting for them under the name Abu Zakariya al-Britani.

* 'There should be no further releases from Gitmo,' Trump tweeted, referring to the island detention facility by its nickname
* He added: 'These are extremely dangerous people and should not be allowed back onto the battlefield'
* Obama is said to have notified Congress that he intends to release 18 more Guantanamo Bay inmates – nearly one-third of the remaining total
* Nations including Italy, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are set to take them
* Obama vowed in 2008 to close Gitmo but he hasn't been able to follow through

President-elect Donald Trump left no doubt on Tuesday where he stands on President Barack Obama's nine-year-old pledge to shutter the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

'There should be no further releases from Gitmo,' Trump tweeted, referring to the island detention facility by its nickname.

'These are extremely dangerous people and should not be allowed back onto the battlefield.'

Gitmo is home to a dwindling number of terror suspects, most of whom have been deemed too great a risk to relocate to other countries.

Nearly Half Of The Detainees Remaining At Guantanamo Bay Are Slated For Transfer

FOX News: Pentagon: Nearly half of remaining Guantanamo detainees slated for transfer

Nearly half of the detainees remaining at Guantanamo Bay are slated for transfer, a Pentagon official confirmed to Fox News.

Of the 76 remaining detainees, 34 have been approved for transfer to countries that have agreed to accept them, according to spokeswoman Valerie Henderson.

Thirty-two other detainees are slated to have their cases heard by a Department of Defense review board.

Not all the detainees that get transferred to other countries will go to prison, however, and the details of the terms of each transfer with other nations remain a secret.

Ten other detainees at Gitmo cannot be transferred based on the severity of the charges they face.

White House Official Blames Past Bush Administration For Releasing A Guantanamo Detainee Who Killed Americans

Washington Examiner: Obama admin: Bush released Gitmo detainee who killed Americans

The Guantanamo Bay detainee who U.S. authorities say is responsible for killing Americans was released during President George W. Bush's time in office, according to a senior Obama administration official.

"Less than five percent of detainees released since January 2009 are confirmed of re-engaging in terrorism and, of those, none are assessed to have killed Americans," the official told the Washington Examiner.

The official made the clarification following testimony Wednesday from one of the administration's two envoys for closing the prison. Citing national security concerns, the official requested anonymity and would not provide further details about the detainee or the circumstances surrounding the Americans' deaths.

Long War Journal: ODNI: 204 former Guantanamo detainees are confirmed or suspected recidivists

The number of former Guantanamo detainees confirmed or suspected of rejoining the jihad has grown to 204, according to a summary released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) yesterday. Nearly two-thirds of the jihadists, 128 in total, are at-large. The remaining 76 ex-detainees have been killed, died of natural causes, or were re-captured.

The overwhelming majority of the ex-detainees on the ODNI’s recidivist list, 185 out of 204 (91 percent), were transferred or released during the Bush administration. An additional 19 recidivists (7 confirmed, 12 suspected) were freed from Guantanamo during President Obama’s tenure.

The Case For Not Releasing Gitmo Detainees

From The Wall Street Journal:

It's a fair bet that no high-powered American law firm will lend a caring hand to the relatives of the seven Iraqis murdered last month by a suicide bomber named Abdullah Salih Al Ajmi and two accomplices. That's too bad, seeing as how Ajmi was himself a beneficiary of some of that high-powered legal help.

Ajmi is a Kuwaiti who was 29 when he blew himself up in the northern city of Mosul in April. But before that he had spent more than three years as an enemy combatant at Guantanamo, where he was known as "Captive 220." He was taken prisoner at Tora Bora, Afghanistan, after the fall of the Taliban, in whose service he had reportedly spent eight months. While in detention, he told interrogators that his intention was "to kill as many Americans" as he possibly could.

My Comment: In the past, combatants who were not dressed in military uniform were always taken to the side of the road and executed, or at best had no Geneva protection as prisoners of war. In todays legal world, we have become a society that is very good at expressing liberal positions and ideals, but in the event that something goes wrong, responsibility for your action is absent. This Wall Street Journal piece accurately covers the "what happens when things go wrong".

We see many people and institutions who wish to have most if not all Gitmo detainees released and/or proceed through a legal system that has no precedent to handle their cases (The Nuremberg trials may be an exception). Worse, when a former Gitmo prisoner commit mass murder, accountability and responsibility are absent. Is this justice. Is this moral and right. I am now doubtful that this is the case.
