* The US inspected Pakistan's fighter inventory after a February dogfight, in which India claimed that one of its MiG-21 Bison aircraft shot down a Pakistani F-16, and found nothing missing, Foreign Policy reported on Thursday.
* The report followed others indicating that Indian pilots had missed their targets in the air raid on Pakistan in an embarrassing failure.
* "As details come out, it looks worse and worse for the Indians," an expert told Foreign Policy.

India proudly claimed that one of its Russian-designed MiG-21 fighters shot down one of Pakistan's US-made F-16s before being downed by a Pakistani missile in a dogfight in February, but a US inventory of Pakistan's fighters found nothing missing, Foreign Policy reported on Thursday, citing two senior US defense officials.

Tensions between the two nuclear-armed rivals hit levels not seen in decades in February after militants based in Pakistan killed 40 Indian paramilitary police in a suicide bombing in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Reuters: India, Pakistan threatened to unleash missiles at each other: sources

NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The sparring between India and Pakistan last month threatened to spiral out of control and only interventions by U.S. officials, including National Security Advisor John Bolton, headed off a bigger conflict, five sources familiar with the events said.

At one stage, India threatened to fire at least six missiles at Pakistan, and Islamabad said it would respond with its own missile strikes “three times over”, according to Western diplomats and government sources in New Delhi, Islamabad and Washington.

The way in which tensions suddenly worsened and threatened to trigger a war between the nuclear-armed nations shows how the Kashmir region, which both claim and is at the core of their enmity, remains one of the world’s most dangerous flashpoints.

The exchanges did not get beyond threats, and there was no suggestion that the missiles involved were anything more than conventional weapons, but they created consternation in official circles in Washington, Beijing and London.

The amount of garbage commentary and skewed analysis on the whole shoot down has been unbelievable. Here's the reality, like it or not.

I have never seen such a large and diverse mess of misinformation spouted and parroted with wild abandon about a military skirmish than what has come out of the short spate of Pakistani-Indian air battles that occurred in late February. But one aspect of those operations, in particular, has been so ridiculously mischaracterized by the media, so-called analysts, and the public in general, that the majority of narratives surrounding it have to be called out for what they are—total bullshit.

During a Pakistani Air Force counterstrike operation on February 27th, one that came in response to India's air raid into their territory on February 26th, an Indian MiG-21 Bison was shot down and its pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, captured. He was returned to India in remarkably good shape not long after. Claims that India shot down a Pakistani F-16 during that same incident quickly followed.

Soldiers from India and Pakistan have targeted each other along the volatile frontier in disputed Kashmir, killing at least six civilians and wounding four others, officials have said.

Fighting resumed overnight into dawn, leaving two siblings and their mother dead in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The three died after a shell fired by Pakistani soldiers hit their home in Poonch region near the so-called Line of Control that divides the Himalayan territory between the two nuclear-armed rivals, police said.

The children's father was critically wounded and has been hospitalised. It is not known which country the other three civilians originated from.

The Indian Air force (IAF) has shown off the wreckage of a US-made missile, which it says “conclusively proves” Pakistani jets attacked Indian military bases. Pakistan had previously denied sending its warplanes.

IAF Air Vice Marshall RGK Kapoor told reporters, at a press conference on Thursday, that an Indian MiG-21 Bison shot down a Pakistani Air Force (PAF) F-16 one day earlier. The F-16 was one of several that attacked Indian military bases, Kapoor said.

ABC News Online: Imran Khan to consult nuclear chiefs after India's first air strike on Pakistan in decades

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan will stage an emergency parliamentary session and meet with the body in control of Islamabad's nuclear arsenal in response to India's first air strikes on Pakistan since 1971.

The two nuclear-armed neighbours have fought three wars since partition in 1947, and the majority of them have been over Kashmir — a territory both India and Pakistan claim in full.

The air strike near Balakot, a town 50 kilometres into Pakistan from the Indian border, was the deepest raid launched by India since the last of its three wars with Pakistan, but there were competing claims about any damage caused.

Radio Pakistan has released the first footage of an Indian pilot captured after his aircraft was shot down by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) when it entered their airspace.

The PAF says it shot down two Indian aircraft, one of which fell inside Azad Jammu and Kashmir, while other fell inside Indian-administered Kashmir. In the video, the arrested Indian pilot is seen giving his name and rank number to the Pakistani officials questioning him.

Pakistan and India said today they had shot down each other's warplanes, in a dramatic escalation of the dangerous confrontation between the nuclear-armed rivals.

Pakistan said it downed two Indian jets in its airspace and captured two pilots, but insisted it does not 'want to go towards war' with its neighbour.

India confirmed the loss of one of its planes and said it had shot down a Pakistani fighter jet, in a conflict played out over the skies of the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.

In a sign of the deepening crisis, Pakistan closed its airspace 'until further notice'. At least six airports were shuttered in India, and a vast area of airspace north of New Delhi was closed to civilian flights.

ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian jets crossed into Pakistani territory on Tuesday, conducting what one minister said was an air strike on “terror camps”, dramatically escalating tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors who have fought three wars against each other.

The confrontation follows a growing rift between the arch-foes since a Feb. 14 suicide bombing in the disputed Kashmir region, claimed by a Pakistani-based militant group, killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary police. New Delhi blamed Islamabad, which denies having a role in the attack.

The warning comes a day after Prime Minister Imran Khan approved military response as tensions rise over Kashmir issue.

The Pakistani army has said it is prepared to defend against any attack by India, and would respond with "full force" if that happens, a spokesman said a day after Prime Minister Imran Khan authorised the military to begin preparations for a possible attack.

"We have no intention to initiate war, but we will respond with full force to full spectrum threat, that would surprise you," said Major General Asif Ghafoor on Friday, amid heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Reuters: India calls off planned meeting with Pakistan's foreign minister

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India called off on Friday a planned meeting of its foreign minister with her Pakistani counterpart on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly later this month.

India has decided to drop the idea of the proposed meeting, the first such high-level talk planned in years between the nuclear rivals, to protest about the killing of Indian security personnel and the glorification of a militant and militancy by Pakistan, India’s foreign office said in a statement.

The ministry had announced the meeting after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote to his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, suggesting their foreign ministers meet in New York.

But the statement said that since its announcement “two deeply disturbing developments have taken place”.

Both countries are arming their submarines with nukes.

KARACHI, Pakistan — The Karachi Naval Dockyard, home port and strategic nerve center for Pakistan’s fleet, sits on a sliver of land bracketed between Port Grand, a “family fun” pier that features kiddie rides and a panoramic view of warships at anchor, and Machar Colony, a sprawling slum where cattle graze on garbage and a million human inhabitants live in nearly unimaginable squalor.

It was here, during the quiet predawn of May 6, 2014, that four rogue naval officers walked up the gangway of the PNS Zulfiqar, a 4,000-ton frigate that was preparing to put to sea. A guard inspected their ID badges and saluted. Once on board, their plan was to join up with another group of six militants disguised in marine uniforms who were approaching the Zulfiqar in an inflatable dinghy. Together they hoped to hijack the ship and use it to attack a US Navy patrol in the Indian Ocean.

Both India and Pakistan have between 120 and 140 nuclear warheads, according to estimates provided by the Arms Control Association. However a report produced in 2015 by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Stimson Center asserts that Pakistan may be outpacing India in terms of its nuclear stockpile, and may possess 350 nuclear warheads in the next five to ten years. A 2016 SIPRI report confirmed the assessment that Pakistan has more nuclear warheads than India.

However, what distinguishes the two neighbors’ nuclear-weapons programs from each other is not so much the pace of production or the size of the stockpiles, but their radically different nuclear doctrines. The major difference between the two countries’ nuclear doctrines is that while India has renounced first use of nuclear weapons, Pakistan has refused to do so by reserving its right to use nuclear weapons in the face of India’s conventional superiority.
