Iran Launches Missile Strikes On Targets In Pakistan

 

Al-Monitor: Iran hits Pakistan with air strike, killing two children, in latest escalation of conflict in the region: Tehran carries out attack as world focuses on Gaza and Red Sea 

* Pakistani media said attack was near Panjgur in southwest Balochistan province 

* It comes less than a week after UK-US coalition struck Houthi targets in Yemen 

An Iranian strike on targets inside Pakistan killed two children and wounded three other people overnight, the Pakistani government has said, further stoking fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East. 

Pakistan's foreign ministry issued a statement confirming Tuesday's attack, which was first announced by Iranian media reports that were later withdrawn. 

Islamabad called the attack an 'unprovoked violation' of the country's airspace, with the strikes reportedly targeting bases of Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl, and warned of 'serious consequences'.

WNU Editor: I am skeptical that India or Pakistan are going to launch military strikes against targets like Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice) in Pakistan. But I am in the minority with this opinion. The rumour mill on social media (for what it is worth) is that both countries will be initiating military strikes against Pakistan in the coming days.

Al Jazeera: Iran warns Pakistan to crack down on Jaish al-Adl

Revolutionary Guard commander says if Pakistan fails to take action at once, Iran will take its own 'revenge'.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) chief has warned Pakistan to crack down on armed group Jaish al-Adl following a suicide attack in the border province of Sistan-Baluchestan that killed 27 members of the elite security force.

IRGC Commander-in-Chief Mohammad Ali Jafari said on Saturday that Islamabad should go after the armed group right away before Tehran takes its "revenge".

"If Pakistan fails to punish them in the near future, Iran will do so based on international law and will retaliate against the terrorists," Jafari was quoted by the Iranian media as saying.

Iran Threatens To Launch Military Strikes Against Militant Safe Havens In Pakistan

Reuters: Iran warns will hit militant 'safe havens' inside Pakistan

The head of the Iranian armed forces warned Islamabad on Monday that Tehran would hit bases inside Pakistan if the government does not confront Sunni militants who carry out cross-border attacks.

Ten Iranian border guards were killed by militants last month. Iran said Jaish al Adl, a Sunni militant group, had shot the guards with long-range guns, fired from inside Pakistan.

The border area has long been plagued by unrest from both drug smuggling gangs and separatist militants.

Iran Threatens To Invade Pakistan To Free Border Guards

Iran 'May Send Forces To Pakistan For Captured Guards' -- BBC

Iran's interior minister has warned it may send forces into Pakistan to free five border guards seized earlier this month.

They are thought to have been taken into Pakistan after being captured in Iran's Sistan Baluchistan region.

Abdolreza Rahmani-Fazli demanded that Islamabad treat the case "strongly and seriously" and "take the necessary measures" to secure their release.

The Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl has said it was behind their capture.

The group has posted what it said were photographs of the guards, bound and being held in an unknown location.

A video broadcast by al-Arabiya TV on Friday purportedly showed one of the men, Sgt Jamshyd Danaifard, saying they were "safe and sound".

He added that Jaish al-Adl wanted the Iranian authorities to exchange 300 Sunni prisoners in Iran and its close ally Syria for the guards.

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan is reaching out to its neighbor, Iran, for cooperation on energy and security, despite ongoing international attempts to isolate Tehran for its nuclear program. The latest talks between the two countries on a proposed gas pipeline that could aggravate Pakistani ties with the United States.

In recent days, officials in Islamabad have had talks with their Tehran counterparts on the construction of a $1.5 billion gas pipeline from Iran that would help ease acute energy shortages in Pakistan. This week, Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has also signed a security deal between the two countries to tighten security along their borders.

TEHRAN – During a telephone President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari to order the country’s security forces to immediately arrest terrorists behind the deadly bombing attacks inside Iran’s border province of Sistan-Baluchestan and hand them over to Iran.
