About 160M People Would Like To Immigrate To The US

Migrants and refugees from Venezuela huddle around a fire near the US-Mexico border [File: John Moore/Getty Images/AFP]

Washington Examiner: About 160M people would like to immigrate to the US. Here's what that means

Currently, Americans aren’t reproducing at the replacement rate. So, some level of immigration will be needed in order to prevent a disastrous population implosion.

But how much immigration should we have, and on what basis should we select our immigrants?

When someone in a poorer country says she wants to become an American, it’s not nice to say no. It also makes me a bit uneasy for our government to select would-be immigrants based on the purported “value” of those immigrants. On the other hand, an immigration lottery is so arbitrary that it seems its own sort of cruelty.

President Biden Visits The U.S. - Mexico Border

Daily Mail: EXCLUSIVE This is what Biden didn't see at the border: Watch as hundreds of illegal immigrants, recently arrived on US soil, cheer the president while his motorcade thunders past fence

* About 200 migrants waited at the border fence after crossing on to U.S. soil

* They cheered as Biden's motorcade raced past on Sunday afternoon

* It was an ironic twist to such a carefully stage-managed visit to El Paso

* The president probably never knew he came within a few dozen feet of them

President Joe Biden came closer than he ever realized to hundreds of illegal migrants who had just set foot on American soil during his border trip on Sunday.

As his presidential motorcade sped along closed roads from one carefully stage-managed facility visit to another, he came within a few dozen feet of migrants lining up on the wrong side of the border fence.

They sent up a cheer as Biden's convoy race past above them even though he would almost certainly have been oblivious to their presence.

What Crisis At The Border?

Daily Mail: Crisis, what crisis? El Paso clears migrant camps ahead of Biden's first trip to border on Sunday as frustrated agents say numbers always fall in January and he might as well have gone to Des Moines

* President Joe Biden is due to visit the Texas border city of El Paso on Sunday

* He has been under intense pressure to see the crisis for himself

* But border patrol agents say he won't see the problems they have to deal with

* The city cleared migrant camps last week and illegal crossings have dropped

* Border agents' union says Biden will learn little from his three-hour visit

When President Joe Biden makes his first visit to the border with Mexico on Sunday, he will hear from aid workers helping manage the immigration crisis and from local officials desperate for more support.

What he won't see are the miserable makeshift camps dotted around El Paso that triggered headlines last month about migrants taking over the streets.

On Tuesday and Wednesday law enforcement teams moved through the downtown area, picking up migrants who had entered the country illegally.

The U.S. Border No Longer Exists

A group of 1,000 migrants, possibly the largest single group so far, crossed the Rio Grande River overnight to turn themselves in to US Border Patrol agents in El Paso, Texas

Daily Mail: The ticking border time bomb: 1,000 migrants in the largest caravan in HISTORY crosses the Rio Grande into El Paso - with huge numbers being released onto the streets and just nine days until Title 42 ends

* A group of 1,000 migrants crossed illegally into El Paso, Texas on Sunday night

* It is possibly the largest single caravan so far to cross into the U.S. from Mexico

* Migrants are mostly from Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua

* Comes just nine days before the expiration of Title 42, which allowed immediate expulsion of asylum-seekers during the COVID-19 pandemic

* Before the mass migration over the weekend, Mexican police escorted nearly 20 buses full of migrants into Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

More than 1,000 migrants streamed across the southern border into Texas on Sunday night in a dire indication of the chaos to come when Title 42 comes to an end in just nine days.

The group from Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua - possibly the largest in history - ran across the Rio Grande into El Paso, where local officials are releasing hundreds of migrants back onto the streets and border officials are bracing for a surge in crossers.

Footage shows the migrants wading through the water carrying belongings and then waiting in line on the river's bank to be processed by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials.

Pentagon Demies Washington DC's Plea For The National Guard To Be Deployed To Deal With Migrants Arriving In The City By Bus

Daily Mail: Pentagon DENIES DC Mayor Muriel Bowser's second plea for the National Guard to be deployed to deal with huge influx of migrants into the city

* The Pentagon has rejected a second request from Washington, D.C.'s mayor

* Muriel Bowser has asked for help to deal with migrants arriving in the city by bus

* Pentagon said it 'would not be appropriate' to use the DC National Guard and that the Defense Department 'cannot fulfill your request'

* Bowser had initially requested DC National Guard support in late-July when she said the city had reached a 'tipping point' with the number of migrants

* More than 7,500 have now arrived since April in the capital * Governors of Texas and Arizona began busing migrants from the southern border to the capital starting in April to protest Biden's immigration policy

* Texas is now bussing immigrants to the Big Apple on a regular basis

The Pentagon has denied a second request by Washington DC's mayor to help receive migrants arriving from Republican-led states Texas and Arizona.

Mayor Muriel Bowser in July called for the deployment of the District of Columbia National Guard to help with migrants describing it as a 'humanitarian crisis'.

Bowser asked for 90-day deployment and for a review at the end of that period, but the request was denied by the U.S. military.

Poland’s plan to build a fence at its border to Belarus to deter migrants would close one of the last major gaps in Eastern European border barriers. Daily Mail: Biden administration is considering awarding $450,000 per person to families separated at the border under Trump's zero-tolerance policy

* Officials are considering the payments that could total close to $1 million for two people within the same family

* The ACLU which represents the families, has identified about 5,500 children separated from parents at the border during the course of the Trump-era policy

* Former President Trump's administration enacted the policy in April 2018 and withdrew it two months later after much controversy in June

* The total potential payout could cost $1 billion or more

The Biden administration is considering paying out a whopping $450,000 per person to families separated at the southern border as it tries to settle lawsuits with migrants who say the policy caused them lasting psychological damage.

Officials from the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services are considering the payments that could total close to $1 million for two people within the same family, people familiar told the Wall Street Journal.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which represents the separated families, has identified about 5,500 children separated from parents at the border during the course of the Trump-era policy.

Daily Mail: 'Mother of all caravans' swells to around 4,000 as migrants press on through Mexico reaching Chiapas state in steady march towards US border

* The Central Americans are trekking towards the border in a growing group

* At least 1,000 state troopers and Texas Rangers are monitoring the border

The biggest migrant caravan since the start of the pandemic is heading towards the US, with an estimated 4,000 people walking through Mexico towards the border.

The group of mostly Central Americans, branded the 'mother of all caravans' is trekking through Chiapas state in southern Mexico but their progress has been hampered by the large number of children in their group.

About 2,000 migrants had walked out of the southern city of Tapachula near the Guatemala border on Saturday.

Facebook Admits It Doesn't Ban Information That Helps Illegal Immigration And Smuggling

Daily Mail: Facebook admits users can share information on illegal immigration and being smuggled: Arizona Attorney General calls for investigation into tech giant for 'facilitating human and sex trafficking'

* Facebook admitted allowing such content in a response to AZ's Mark Brnovich

* Brnovich wrote to Facebook following a report into advertisements of trafficking

* Facebook said it does not allow adverts, but it does allow information about how to enter illegally or request information about how to be smuggled

* Brnovich passed the response on to Merrick Garland, calling for federal action

Facebook has admitted that it allows users to share information about how to enter countries illegally, along with how to be smuggled, on its social media platforms.

In a letter responding to the Arizona Attorney General, the company said that while offers to provide or facilitate people smuggling are banned on the platform, Facebook does allow information to be shared freely between users about how to enter the US illegally, and request information about people smuggling.

A Mass Exodus Of People From Latin America To The U.S. Is Now Underway

Wall Street Journal: Latin American Migration, Once Limited to a Few Countries, Turns Into a Mass Exodus

Haitian standoff in Texas reflects broader mix of nationalities fleeing pandemic-hobbled economies from around the hemisphere

CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Mexico—The gathering of thousands of Haitians at the Texas-Mexico border this past week reflects a stark change in migration patterns to the U.S., driven by Covid-19. A far broader mix of nationalities is turning up at the border than in the past.

For decades, most crossers were Mexican men and, in recent years, families from the troubled Central American countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, known as the Northern Triangle.

Suddenly Ecuadoreans, Brazilians, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, Haitians and Cubans are turning up by the hundreds of thousands, a trend that accelerated sharply in the past six months.

From October 2020 through August, nearly 300,000 migrants from countries other than Mexico and the Northern Triangle were encountered at the border, a fifth of all crossings.

For all of fiscal 2020, when the pandemic slowed the flow of migrants, the figure was nearly 44,000, or 11% of crossings. In fiscal 2019, it was 77,000, or 9% of crossings; and the year before it was only 21,000, or 5%. As recently as 2007 such migrants represented less than 1%.

Among the fastest-growing groups are Haitians. From October of last year through this August, about 28,000 Haitians were arrested trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. That is six times the 4,400 arrested during the entire 2020 fiscal year that ended last September.

The broad wave includes single mothers from Ecuador, Nicaraguan teenagers and farm laborers in Chile. Many cite the same reasons for uprooting their lives and heading north: economic hits from the pandemic that cost jobs and income, the allure of a booming U.S. economy and the belief that President Biden’s administration would welcome them.

WNU Editor: My friends who live in the Americas along with readers of WNU who live in places like Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, and Ecuador ... all of them have been warning me for years that this mass exodus of people from Latin America was going to happen. That it will not be 1 or 2 million a year crossing the U.S. border, but 5 to 10 million a year, and these migrants will be coming from everywhere.

I have always been skeptical. The logistics of millions of people deciding at the same time  to migrate to the U.S. is daunting and very risky.

But I am the first to admit that the pandemic changed everything. And with the Biden administration giving mixed signals at the border, all that I can say is that if I was a migrant from a place like Haiti, I would be doing everything in my power to get into the U.S. before Washington figures out what it wants to do.

U.S. Begins The Deportation Process For Thousands Of Migrants At The Mexico - Texas Border

Daily Mail: Border Patrol are given police escort as they begin removing 14,800 migrants from underneath Texas bridge: Biden finally vows to deport thousands back to Haiti after they arrived because he cancelled repatriation flights

* DailyMail.com traveled to Del Rio, Texas, to witness Saturday's removal operation

* Migrants - many of them without shoes - were put on buses, accompanied by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) cars

* Police were also present, amid fears of tensions after the Biden administration announced plans to deport Haitian border crossers back to their home countries

* The US had suspended deportations to Haiti for humanitarian reasons after the Caribbean island experienced a deadly earthquake

* That subsequently prompted a huge influx of Haitian people hoping to take advantage of the amnesty

Border Patrol has begun removing 14,800 migrants from a squalid camp set up underneath a Texas frontier bridge with the help of hundreds of cops and soldiers.

Exclusive DailyMail.com photos show buses leaving the site and heading towards San Antonio, Texas, accompanied by CBP cars.

Other pictures show one of the migrants being treated for an injury after being caught in the crush and police convoys arriving to provide extra security.

Incredible Images Of Massive Numbers Of Migrants Surging At The U.S. Border

Daily Mail: Thousands of Haitian pour across the border at Del Rio as makeshift camp swells to 10,000 after Biden said illegal immigrants WON'T have to get vaccinated

* Latest crisis in the border saga is unfolding at the International Bridge in Del Rio, Texas on Thursday

* Up to 10,000 migrants, mostly Haitians, have formed a camp under the bridge after crossing illegally

* Food and water has been scarce, and many migrants are wading back to Mexico to bring back supplies * Shocking scenes from Del Rio are the latest border emergency facing President Joe Biden

* On Thursday the FAA issued a flight restriction banning drones from filming the growing camp

* Texas Governor Greg Abbott said he would seal ports of entry before backpedaling hours later

* Rep. Chip Roy called on the governor to seize control of the border from the federal government and seal it

Thousands of migrants continue to converge in a makeshift camp under the bridge that connects Del Rio, Texas and Mexico's Ciudad Acuña, in the latest border emergency and humanitarian crisis facing US President Joe Biden.

The camp had swelled to some 10,000 migrants on Thursday, with thousands seen wading across the Rio Grande River daily.

Most are Haitians, with some Cubans, Venezuelans and Nicaraguans also present.

Amid the surge of the highly infectious Delta variant, the crowded conditions of the camp also raised concerns about the possibility of COVID-19 outbreaks endangering the health of the migrants.

The Afghanistan Refugee Crisis Is About To Get Much Worse

Afghan migrants hide from security forces in a tunnel under train tracks after crossing illegally into Turkey from Iran, near Tatvan in Bitlis province, Turkey August 23, 2021. REUTERS/Murad Sezer

Axios: The Afghan refugee crisis is about to get much worse

Tens of thousands of Afghan refugees will soon need to find new homes, and many countries are preemptively closing their doors.

Why it matters: The U.S. is leading what the White House calls one of the biggest airlift in history as Afghans flee from Taliban rule. That exodus will quickly become a humanitarian crisis involving the U.S., Europe and parts of Asia and the Middle East.

What to watch: The U.S. is preparing to bring in 50,000 Afghan refugees in the next year, Bob Kitchen, vice president of emergencies and humanitarian action at International Rescue Committee (IRC) told Axios.

* That's more than the total, annual number of refugees the U.S. has resettled from all over the world over the past couple years.

* IRC is one of the largest resettlement agencies in the U.S., and typically handles 25% of refugee arrivals Kitchen said. "We're now currently staffing up and getting ready to handle the 25% of 50,000 new arrivals."

The Biden Administration Has No Plan To Contain Or Change The Massive Influx Of Migrants At The Border

Migrants walk across the Paso del Norte international border bridge from the Mexican side to continue their asylum request in the United States, in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico March 1, 2021. REUTERS/Jose Luis Gonzalez

WASHINGTON - As the Biden administration races to find shelter for a fast-growing migration surge along the Mexico border, they are handling the influx primarily as a capacity challenge. The measures they have taken are aimed accommodating the increase, not to contain it or change the upward trend.

The administration has quickly turned detention centers into rapid-processing hubs for families with young children, relaxed shelter capacity rules aimed at lessening the spread of the coronavirus, deployed hundreds of backup border agents to the busiest crossings and tried to mobilize the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help with coronavirus testing and quarantining those who test positive. With bed space filling quickly, officials have drafted plans to put families in hotels in Texas and Arizona.

WNU editor: I do not think most Americans are aware (or care) on how the pandemic has impacted tens of millions of Mexicans and Central Americans who are now facing deteriorating and desperate conditions.

I also do not think that most Americans are focused on what the impact of millions crossing the U.S. border will have on social services, availability and the cost of housing, schools, medical, and government services.

But here is an easy prediction. Most Americans are going to be very aware on what is happening in a year or two.

Washington Examiner: 'Unprecedented': US braces for pandemic to drive largest refugee wave ever to the border

Economic calamities caused by the coronavirus pandemic could trigger a historic wave of migration from Latin America to the United States, according to officials.

“If there is economic collapse in a given country, it is only natural that there will be migration flows to places where the economy is more robust,” U.S. Agency for International Development acting Administrator John Barsa told the Washington Examiner. “Are we concerned about the economic impacts that this might have, which could lead to migration? Absolutely.”

Gallop Poll: Most Migrants Worldwide Do Not Want To Return To Their Birth Country

Gallop: Few Migrants Worldwide Want to Come Home

7% of first-generation migrants would like to return to their birth country
77% of migrants do not want to leave their adopted country
16% if migrants would like to move to another country

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In his inaugural speech in 2019, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky implored Ukrainians abroad to come home -- and to bring their knowledge, experience and values with them. But Gallup data show how tough of a sell this is, not just for the Ukrainian diaspora, but for most migrants.

At least 80% of migrants from a host of countries, including Ukraine and several others in conflict such as Iraq and Yemen, have no desire to leave their adopted countries and move home or anywhere else. But the list notably also includes countries such as Portugal, which is desperately trying to get Portuguese living abroad to return home in order to maintain a stable working population.

Will The Democrats Lose The U.S. Presidential Election Because They Support Giving Free Health Care To ALL Illegal Immigrants?

FOX News: Democrats unite at debate in endorsing health care to undocumented immigrants

All 10 candidates on Thursday night’s Democratic debate stage said their health care plans would provide coverage for people in the country illegally, a show of unity on what had been a contentious night between the candidates.

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg and former Vice President Joe Biden were given the opportunity to elaborate.

“Our country is healthier when everybody is healthier,” said Buttigieg. “We’re talking about something people are given the opportunity to buy into in the same way that there are undocumented immigrants in my community who pay. They pay sales taxes, they pay property taxes directly or indirectly. This is not about a handout, this is an insurance program and we do ourselves no favors by having 11 million undocumented people in our country be unable to access health care.”
