Five militants who stormed an upmarket hotel complex in Nairobi were "eliminated" after an almost 20 hour siege that left at least 14 victims dead, Kenyan police chief Joseph Boinnet said on Wednesday.

"There were five terrorists and all of them are no more," he told AFP.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta urged Kenyans to “go back to work without fear” in a televised address on Wednesday, insisting that the East African nation remained safe for citizens and visitors. "I can now confirm that... the security operation at Dusit is over and all terrorists have been eliminated," Mr Kenyatta said.

A British man and an American man are among at least 15 people killed after four gunmen sprayed guests with bullets and a suicide bomber blew himself up in a terror attack on a luxury hotel in Kenya.

The four attackers, one wearing a green belt laden with grenades, were seen on CCTV blasting their way into the hotel and office complex in Nairobi after denoting car bombs outside a nearby bank.

The suicide bomber then blew himself up in the lobby before the other three began hurling grenades and shooting people as they fled or hid under tables.

Charles Njenga, a worker at the complex, said after fleeing: 'What I have seen is terrible. I have seen a human as I ran out and there is what looks like minced meat all over.'

An upscale complex in Kenya's capital is under attack by terrorists who have set off multiple explosions and have opened fire on civilians.

Survivors are running for their lives, vehicles are on fire and victims are being carried on stretchers from the scene. One witness said he saw at least two bodies inside the complex.

'It is terrible. What I have seen is terrible. I have seen a human as I ran out and there is what looks like minced meat all over,' said Charles Njenga, who fled the scene.

'I have been hiding. My colleagues were running everywhere,' said another man. He said he hid in an office. 'I didn't see an attacker. It was a terrorist attack. I think so.'

GARISSA, KENYA - A day after the horror, this hospital some 200 kilometers from the Somali border has become the central meeting point for survivors of a daylong siege by al-Shabab militants at Garissa University College that left 147 people dead.

Sitting on a shady bench and a wearing a hospital gown, second-year student Quintin Anyango says she awoke early to study in a lecture hall.

Crossing the campus, she encountered several gunmen, and her day took a horrifying turn.

“Oh, I had no hope, I knew that was the end of life since I had no options," she said. "I had nowhere to go.”

Reuters: Al Shabaab kills at least 147 at Kenyan university; siege ends

(Reuters) - Gunmen from the Islamist militant group al Shabaab stormed a university in Kenya and killed at least 147 people on Thursday, in the worst attack on Kenyan soil since the U.S. embassy was bombed in 1998.

The siege ended nearly 15 hours after the Somali group's gunmen shot their way into the Garissa University College campus in a pre-dawn attack, sparing Muslim students and taking many Christians hostage.

Interior Minister Joseph Nkaissery said four gunmen strapped with explosives were behind the attack, the same number that killed 67 people during the 2013 bloodbath at a shopping mall in Nairobi.

"The operation has ended successfully. Four terrorists have been killed," Nkaissery told Kenyan media.

New York Times: Shabab Attack on a Kenya University Kills at Least 70, Officials Say

NAIROBI, Kenya — Gunmen attacked a university campus in northeastern Kenya early Thursday, clashing with guards, forcing their way into dormitories, taking hostages and singling out non-Muslims, the police said.

At least 70 people were killed in the attack and 79 more were injured, the Kenya National Disaster Operation Center said in a Twitter message.

Kenyan security forces surrounded the campus of Garissa University College and clashed with the gunmen throughout the day, eventually cornering them in one dormitory, officials said. Abdikadir Sugow, the spokesman for the Garissa county government, said the gunmen were seen wearing “combat gear,” including what appeared to be “either bulletproof vests or suicide bomb vests.”

NAIROBI, Kenya — At least 48 people were killed after dozens of militants attacked a Kenyan coastal town overnight, targeting a police station and two hotels, officials said Monday.

The attacks began Sunday evening as residents of Mpeketoni, a town near the tourist resort of Lamu Island, were watching World Cup soccer matches on television, The Associated Press reported. The A.P. said that residents had been watching a match at the Breeze View Hotel when the attackers took aside some of the men and gunned them down in front of the women.

The government blamed a Somali extremist group, the Shabab. The authorities said that gunmen had emerged from two minibuses before starting the assault, in which at least one police officer was killed. Some panicked residents ran for cover in nearby bushes as the shooting began, the police said.

MOGADISHU, May 22 (Reuters) - A senior Somali Islamist commander said his group had moved its holy war to Kenya's capital, threatening to launch attacks by teenage suicide bombers on a city already reeling from bomb blasts and a deadly militant assault on a shopping mall.

Somalia's al Shabaab group has declared war on its neighbour before, but Fuad Mohamed Khalaf's comments suggested an escalation in a campaign that has piled pressure on the Kenyan government and alarmed regional and global powers.

"We have transferred the war to inside Nairobi," Khalaf, one of al Shabaab's most senior officials, said in a speech posted on the Somali website www.somalimemo.net.

After Terror Warnings Are Issued By Western Nations Kenya Rocked By Bomb Attacks

Explosions In Kenya Leave At Least 10 Dead, Officials Say -- CNN

Nairobi, Kenya (CNN) -- At least 10 people were killed in two explosions Friday in central Nairobi, the Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre said via Twitter.

As many as 76 people were wounded in the blasts at the Gikomba market and on a public minibus, the disaster agency said. Ambulances evacuated 43 injured males and 33 injured females, the Centre said via Twitter.

Two suspects were arrested in connection with the explosions, which were caused by grenades, according to Nairobi Police Commandant Benson Kibuye.

There have been no claims of responsibility in the attack.

(CNN) -- Deadly explosions ripped through two passenger buses in Nairobi, Kenya's capital, on Sunday, killing at least three people and injuring a number of others.

Kenyan police reported three people were killed and seven injured in one bus explosion, but they have not yet confirmed the second blast.

Police are treating the incident as a terrorist attack, but there were no immediate suspects, spokeswoman Zipporah Mboroki said Sunday.

The Kenya National Disaster Operation Center confirmed explosions on two buses.

The agency tweeted that two people were killed and 62 injured, including 20, who were in critical condition.

Chilling footage has emerged of the moment a terrorist mercilessly gunned down a shopper in last month's bloody attack at a Kenyan shopping mall.

Surveillance video obtained exclusively by CNN from a supermarket in the Westgate shopping centre shows the moment terrified men, women and children ran for their lives from the attackers.

One man cowers in front of a cashier desk, but he is immediately spotted by one of the terrorists who shoots him at close-range and walks away.

It is two weeks since al-Shabaab militants brought mayhem to an upmarket shopping centre in Nairobi, executing unarmed men, women and children as they tried to hide or flee. At least 67 people were killed. Now, a detailed investigation based on interviews with survivors, their relatives and members of the Kenyan security forces reveals how incompetence and infighting among the authorities left the attackers free to continue their slaughter for 80 hours

At 12.30pm on Saturday 21 September, Frank Musungu, a sergeant major in the Kenyan navy, was sitting out on the balcony of the Artcaffe in Nairobi’s Westgate mall, next to its main pedestrian entrance. Military personnel had been advised against visiting the Kenyan capital’s high-profile shopping malls, in case they were targeted by terrorists. He went anyway but took his handgun as a precaution. Like many in the country’s poorly paid armed services he had hopes of a job at the nearby UN headquarters and was meeting a friend in the diplomatic police to look over his CV. Their discussion was abruptly interrupted by rapid bursts of automatic fire only a few metres away.

Kenyan Soldiers Looted Stores Before Nairobi Mall Attack Was Over: Report -- Globe And Mail

Within hours of the terrorist attack on the Westgate shopping mall last week, Kenyan soldiers were already looting an abandoned supermarket at the mall, a new report says.

The report, citing closed-circuit television footage, said the video clearly shows soldiers opening cash registers and dumping money into plastic shopping bags on the night of Sept. 21, while the attackers were still in the mall.

The video shows three soldiers walking out of the supermarket with plastic shopping bags filled with cash, according to the report on Thursday by a Nairobi newspaper, The Star. Other soldiers can be seen choosing items from the supermarket shelves, it said.

At least 67 people were killed by the attackers, and dozens more are missing. A Somalia-based Islamist militia, al-Shabab, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Carts full of goods were left standing in Westgate Mall as shoppers fled for their lives when jihadi terrorists rushed the building and started gunning down customers.

The photographs show how people apparently dropped bags on the ground as they made their escape, forming a disturbing portrait of the moment chaos broke out.

Apparently The 'White Widow' Was Able To Escape The Kenyan Mall Massacre During The Confusion Of The Attack

Irish-born terrorist rented a unit in mall for months before attack that left 67 people dead.

THE Irish-born terror chief dubbed the 'White Widow' slipped out of the Kenyan shopping mall after smearing blood over her face, security sources in the country have exclusively told the Sunday Independent.

They also revealed how Samantha Lewthwaite, the Co Down-born widow of London suicide bomber Germaine Lindsay, rented a unit at the Westgate Shopping mall months ago, in preparation for last week's terror killing spree.

She hung up newspapers around the shop unit to conceal what was going on inside, pretending to be stocking up on goods.
