A major counter-terrorism investigation has been launched after several kilograms of uranium was seized at Heathrow airport. 

The deadly nuclear material - which could potentially be used in a ‘dirty bomb’ - arrived on a flight from Oman, in the Middle East, on December 29. 

The shipment was addressed to an Iranian-linked firm in the UK, it is understood.

A hero taxi driver has been credited with saving many lives after locking an alleged suicide bomber inside his cab just moments before the vehicle blew up outside a hospital in what police and MI5 are now probing as a Poppy Day terror attack. 

The explosion turned David Perry's cab into a fireball outside the Liverpool Women's Hospital, seconds before the 11am minute's silence was due to take place yesterday. 

The male passenger, who had asked to go to the city's Service of Remembrance at Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral less than a mile away where 1,200 military personnel, veterans and families of the fallen had gathered, was the only person killed.

Counter-terrorism police last night raided a block of flats in Reading after a frenzied stabbing attack 'by a Libyan man' left three people dead and another three seriously injured.

Witnesses said the attacker targeted a group of middle-aged men 'sitting drinking beer' in Forbury Gardens in Reading town centre at around 7pm on Saturday and systematically stabbed them 'in the neck and under the arms'.

The injured victims were last night understood to be in a critical condition at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

The knife-wielding suspect, 25, was arrested at the scene by a hero lone police sergeant who rugby-tackled him to the floor.

Despite the presence of counter-terrorism officers and early reports it was being treated as a terror-related police said last night they did not believe it was terror-related.

Armed police shot dead a knifeman wearing a fake suicide vest on London Bridge today after he stabbed up to five people in a shocking terrorist attack as frightened crowds fled the scene.

Up to five people were stabbed before the knife maniac ran onto London Bridge shortly before 2pm, where dramatic video showed he was tackled to the ground by at least six heroic members of the public.

Seconds later police told people on top of the suspect to move away, before dragging the last bystander to safety and opening fire. Officers were heard shouting 'stop moving' twice before shooting the man at close range.

One of the brave heroes was on the other side of the bridge, before tackling the man and wrestling the knife off him. The suspect lay on the ground still moving as officers backed away - clearly fearing they were still in danger.

The Westminster terror suspect who ploughed into 15 cyclists and pedestrians was known to police and travelled to London from his Midlands home in a Ford Fiesta bought just two months ago, MailOnline can reveal today.

The man, who is in his late twenties, is refusing to speak to detectives about why he carried out the shocking carborne rush hour attack outside Parliament this morning.

Scotland Yard said today he was not known to their counter-terrorism officers or MI5 but security sources say the suspect, from the Birmingham area, was known to police in the West Midlands.

The vehicle police say he 'deliberately' used as a weapon was registered in Nottingham but written off by insurers late last year before being put back on the road and sold again eight weeks ago.

Today the terror suspect looked dazed as he was dragged from the smoking silver Ford Fiesta by around a dozen armed officers who had their rifles trained on him.

Two men will appear in court later today to face charges related to an alleged explosive plot on Downing Street.

A terror plot to assassinate Prime Minister Theresa May has been foiled, Sky sources have confirmed.

Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said: "It's the latest in a number of terror plots that police and MI5 believe they've foiled this year.

"I understand that the head of MI5, Andrew Parker, briefed Cabinet ministers today, such is the seriousness of what they believed they have uncovered.

"It is in essence an extreme Islamist suicide plot against Downing Street. Essentially police believe that the plan was to launch some sort of improvised explosive device at Downing Street and in the ensuing chaos attack and kill Theresa May, the Prime Minister.

Several people have been injured after a car mounted the pavement and mowed down pedestrians outside the Natural History Museum in London this afternoon.

A man was pinned down by security guards and arrested by police in the heart of the capital's museum land in Kensington.

Hundreds of terrified tourists fled the scene as the black Toyota Prius - a registered minicab - careered into a sign before ultimately crashing into a crowd of as many as 10 people as it hit a silver car, according to witnesses.

Dramatic pictures show guards holding down a man covered in blood with rubble strewn across the road. Dozens of armed officers converged on the scene and patrolled the area as search dogs combed the area.
Nearby museums including the Science Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum were evacuated with Tube stations sealed off by police.

Armed police have flooded London's streets as the terror threat level was raised to critical amid fears the Parsons Green bomber could strike again, Theresa May announced tonight.

The introduction of Operation Temperer will see soldiers replacing police at key sites including nuclear power plants to free up extra armed officers for regular patrols.

Scotland Yard said it is making 'excellent' progress in hunting the suspected terrorist who set off a crude bucket bomb on a packed commuter train by Parsons Green tube station in west London at 8.20am.

Mrs May said in a statement from Number 10: 'The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre has now decided to raise the national threat level from severe to critical - this means their assessment is that a further attack may be imminent.'

The Independent: Van hits pedestrians near Finsbury Park Mosque in London

Several pedestrians have been injured after being hit by a van in London.

Witnesses said the vehicle veered off the road into crowds outside Finsbury Park Mosque but it was unclear whether the collision was deliberate.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said officers were called at 12.20am.

"Officers are on the scene with other emergency services," he added. "There are a number of casualties being worked on at the scene. There has been one person arrested. Enquiries continue."

Sadiq Khan attended a conference with one of the London Bridge murderers' close friends who is accused of training one of the 7/7 bombers, MailOnline can reveal.

The London Mayor spoke on the same platform as Sajeel Shahid, a militant who is said to have helped to train the ringleader of the July 7 London bomb attacks.

It emerged today Shahid was gym buddies with killer Khuram Butt, who butchered seven people in the deadly rampage on the capital's streets on Saturday night.

The pair once ran martial arts classes together at the all-Muslim Ummah Fitness gym in east London.

The third terrorist behind the London Bridge attacks has been named as a 22-year-old Italian-Moroccan amid claims British authorities were tipped off about him coming to the UK.

Youssef Zaghba, who was born in Fez, Morocco to an Italian mother and Moroccan father, was suspected of attempting to travel to Syria last year, according to Italian media.

A married father-of-two and a Moroccan-Libyan 30-year-old can now be revealed as two of the London Bridge terrorists who murdered seven people in the capital city massacre.

The killer in an Arsenal shirt can today be named as British extremist Khuram Butt who was filmed unfurling an ISIS flag on national TV and was reported to the police twice but still managed to launch murder on Britain's streets.

Butt, 27, a married father of two nicknamed 'Abz' who was born in Pakistan, was so extreme he called fellow Muslims without beards non-believers, would not speak to women directly and was banned from a mosque for berating worshippers for being 'un-Islamic'.

He was known to both the police and MI5 who are awaiting what they described as international confirmation before naming the third terrorist.

To murder innocent people, especially during Ramadan, is a rejection of the true values of my religion

As the Mayor of London, it’s difficult to adequately describe the grief and anger that we Londoners are feeling following the attack on our city on Saturday evening. Three sick and twisted individuals indiscriminately murdered innocent people as they enjoyed a night out in the heart of our great capital.

The emergency services, as they always do, responded heroically and I thank them all on behalf of our city. The first armed police were on the scene within minutes and bravely brought the terrible attack to an end swiftly after their arrival. Some suffered injuries in the line of duty. The London Ambulance Service and NHS staff worked throughout the night to treat the injured. And once again, brave bystanders confronted the terrorists and helped the victims.

It’s still early days but our police and security services are doing everything in their power to investigate this attack. They are also working to prevent an incident such as this happening again. The national security level remains at severe — meaning an attack on us is highly likely. I am in constant contact with the Metropolitan Police Commissioner and other senior officers and attended the Government’s emergency Cobra security meetings yesterday and today.

WNU Editor: I have been following Sadiq Khan since his election as mayor of London. In context of what he has said in the past .... and what he even says in the above post .... I still do not get the sense that he truly understands that Islam has a violent radicalism problem. He says that this attack is a rejection of the true values of his religion .... OK .... but it is these same values (minus the violence) that these attackers embrace. Afterall .... Sadiq Khan and these attackers read the same Holy Book .... they all want to go to Mecca at least once in their life .... and they pray according to the customs and traditions of all Muslims. This is a debate that I am first to admit that I am completely unqualified to start. It is something that Muslims themselves (like Sadiq Khan) must initiate and discuss. The problem that I have is that I am seeing some discussion here and there .... but no big debate. No pointing fingers. No overwhelming and massive condemnation throughout the Muslim world on what is right and wrong. Just the usual commentary from hundreds if not thousands of sources .... saying it is not part of their religion .... condemn the act .... and let us all move on. IMHO .... it is not enough.

Update: I really really really hate reading stories like this one because it raises doubts (for me) on how strong is the Muslim backlash against these attacks .... and more importantly .... the role of our media in narrating a message .... Prime Minister Theresa May has called for closer regulation of the internet following a deadly terror attack in London.

At least seven people were killed in a short but violent assault that unfolded late Saturday night in the heart of the capital, the third such attack to hit Britain this year.

May said on Sunday that a new approach to tackling extremism is required, including changes that would deny terrorists and extremist sympathizers digital tools used to communicate and plan attacks.

Reuters: British police will name London Bridge attackers when "operationally possible"

British police said on Sunday they would release the names of the three men who killed seven people in London "as soon as operationally possible", adding that searches were continuing in four properties.

The men rammed a van into pedestrians and stabbed revelers on Saturday night before being shot by police. Twelve people were arrested in east London on Sunday in connection with the attack.

Police said that one man had been released without charge, but four men and seven women were still being detained under terrorism legislation.
