In Mid-January Beijing Issued An Urgent Worldwide Call Among Its Foreign Staff To Acquire As Much Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) As Possible

Global News: United Front groups in Canada helped Beijing stockpile coronavirus safety supplies

In mid-January, Chinese consulates in Canada and worldwide issued an urgent call. China was concerned that the new coronavirus raging in Wuhan was so deadly and infectious that its nurses and doctors would run out of safety supplies.

It needed personal protective equipment (PPE).

In just six weeks, China imported 2.5 billion pieces of epidemic safety equipment, including over two billion safety masks, Chinese government data shows.

And this raises big concerns on a number of fronts, say critics, including Conservative MP Erin O’Toole.

China was evidently hiding the extent of a pandemic that endangered the world while covertly securing PPE at low prices. This “surreptitious” operation left “the world naked with no supply of PPE,” Jorge Guajardo, Mexico’s former ambassador to Beijing, told Global News.

The result: starting in March, after COVID-19 had circled the globe, countries that provided masks to China in January and February were forced to compete for China’s supply.

By late January, sources in manufacturing and military circles were warning western governments that China seemed to be covertly seizing global PPE supply, O’Toole and Guajardo said.

WNU Editor: This reveals to me that the Chinese government was aware in mid-January that this coronavirus outbreak was deadly serious, and to grab as much PPEs as possible. You do not issue an emergency call and be willing to spend literally billions of dollars unless it was serious. It infuriates me to know that during this same period of time they were telling everyone that the outbreak was not serious, even getting the World Health Organization to agree with their assessment. Sighhh .... my blood pressure is rising again.

Update: The above video is a must see on how China operated in getting all of this medical equipment.

University Of Minnesota Report Predicts Pandemic To Last Between 18 And 24 Months

CNBC: Coronavirus outbreak likely to go on for two years, scientists predict

The coronavirus pandemic is likely to last between 18 and 24 months, scientists from the University of Minnesota have predicted.

In a report published Thursday, researchers from the university’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) stressed that Covid-19 was more contagious than the flu and was likely to continue circulating after a first wave this spring.

The new coronavirus has a longer incubation period than the flu, meaning it takes longer for symptoms to appear after a person has been infected, they said, noting that the coronavirus may be at its most contagious before symptoms appear. It was also pointed out that Covid-19 has displayed a higher rate of asymptomatic transmission, as well as a higher R0 rating than influenza.

U.S. Aircraft Carrier Harry S. Truman Is In Coronavirus Limbo Because It Is A 'Clean' Ship

Reuters: Exclusive: Too risky to come home, crew of 'clean' U.S. warship in coronavirus limbo

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - On any given day, the U.S. aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman can be found off the Atlantic coast of the United States, probably somewhere between Virginia and Florida. Its crew would love to come home to their families. But they can’t. They’re just too valuable right now.

That’s because the Truman is a “clean” ship, free from the coronavirus thanks to a longer-than-expected deployment at sea that started in November. The deployment has kept its battle-ready 4,500 crew out of reach of a pandemic that is wreaking havoc elsewhere in the Navy.

Captain Kavon “Hak” Hakimzadeh and members of his crew described to Reuters in exclusive interviews the mixed emotions of being so close to home, but too precious to pull into port, as the Truman settles into a pandemic-driven operational limbo.

“This is a really weird situation for us,” Hakimzadeh told Reuters by phone, the only way to speak to anyone on board given a ban on visitors.

WHO Now Praising The Swedes As A ‘Model’ For Countries Going Forward In The Battle Of Coronavirus

FOX News: WHO: Sweden, which avoided mass coronavirus lockdowns, should be 'model' for the world

A top official from The World Health Organization (WHO) praised Sweden on Wednesday as a "model" for the rest of the world, in fighting the novel coronavirus.

“I think if we are to reach a new normal, I think in many ways Sweden represents a future model of -- if we wish to get back to a society in which we don’t have lockdowns," Dr. Mike Ryan said while speaking to reporters from Geneva.

Ryan, who serves as executive director of WHO's Emergencies Program, praised Sweden's health care system and credited it with making all the right moves from the beginning of the outbreak.

U.S. Intelligence Agencies Says Coronavirus Is Not 'Man-Made Or Genetically Modified'

Daily Mail: Coronavirus is NOT 'man-made or genetically modified,' U.S. intelligence agencies conclude - but spies ARE probing whether it leaked from Wuhan lab by accident

* Statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence rules out conspiracy theory that coronavirus was man-made
* It says U.S. spy agencies, collectively called the intelligence community, agree with 'wide scientific consensus that Covid-19 was not man-made'
* They also rule out genetic modification but say that they are still investigating whether it escaped from lab in Wuhan by accident
* Mike Pompeo, Donald Trump's secretary of state, has said China needs to let U.S. investigators into the Wuhan lab
* 'We know that there is the Wuhan Institute of Virology just a handful of miles away from where the wet market was,' Pompeo said two weeks ago
* Chinese government said that any claims that the coronavirus was released from a laboratory are 'unfounded and purely fabricated out of nothing'

U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that the new coronavirus was 'not manmade or genetically modified' but say they are still examining whether the origins of the pandemic trace to contact with infected animals or an accident at a Chinese lab.

The statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the clearinghouse for the web of U.S. spy agencies, comes as President Donald Trump and his allies have touted the as-yet-unproven theory that an infectious disease lab in Wuhan, the epicenter of the Chinese outbreak, was the source of the global pandemic that has killed more than 220,000 worldwide.

The statement was made shortly after claims surfaced in the New York Times that intelligence analysts were concerned that intelligence could be distorted to fit a pre-determined conclusion.

WNU Editor: President Trump disagrees .... Trump says he's seen evidence suggesting coronavirus emerged from Wuhan lab, compares WHO to PR agency (FOX News). More here .... Trump contradicts US intel community by claiming he's seen evidence coronavirus originated in Chinese lab (CNN). What's my take of this U.S. intelligence assessment. Bottom line. The U.S. intel community does not know. They made their determination solely based on what is the scientific consensus on the origins of this disease. But in the past few months I have lost count on the changing narrative of this disease. Starting with the narrative that it was not capable of transmitting from human to human, to the current narrative that it came naturally from a "wet market". As of this writing the US intel community has not given their sources of information that helped them make this assessment. I say that this reluctance to be transparent is unfortunate. Especially in view of the fact that China has not permitted any outside observers and specialists to enter China to examine the origins of this disease.

President Trump Prepared To Put $1 Trillion In Tariffs On Chinese Goods As Punishment For The Pandemic

Daily Mail: Donald Trump says he has seen evidence that the coronavirus started in Wuhan virology laboratory – as he warns he could impose tariffs of $1 TRILLION on China in retribution

  * Trump said he was confident the virus came from a lab in Wuhan, China
  * The president also warned he could impose tariffs of $1 trillion on China as a punishment for the pandemic
  * He seemed to rule out withholding US debt payments to China calling it a 'rough game' that could damage the 'sanctity' of the dollar
  * Sources said US officials are seeking retribution from the nation, such as canceling debt or stripping China of its 'sovereign immunity'
  * Trump also blasted the World Health Organization Thursday
  * He then cast doubt on the theory the virus jumped from animals to humans

President Donald Trump said he has seen evidence that coronavirus started in the Wuhan virology laboratory, as he warned he could impose tariffs of $1 trillion on China in retribution for the pandemic.

The president made the explosive charge that the coronavirus that has caused millions of infections and wreaked havoc on the global economy may have been created in the Chinese lab during his coronavirus press briefing Thursday.

He also suggested the federal government is exploring ways to punish China for triggering the outbreak by imposing tariffs but he stopped short of saying he would refuse to pay back US debts.

'Yes I have. Yes I have,' Trump said when asked if he has confidence that the Wuhan Institute of Technology was the origin of the virus.

Update: Trump threatens new tariffs on China as U.S. mulls retaliatory action over virus (Reuters)

WNU Editor: My friends in China do not believe President Trump will impose these measures. I tell them that they are underestimating how angry people are in the U.S. over China's role in first lying about this disease, and then helping to spread it across the globe when they lifted restrictions for overseas travel while denying that it would pose a danger. In just three months the following has happened. The U.S. economy is now in ruins, tens of thousands of Americans have died, and there is no "light at the end of the tunnel". And to rub salt into the wound, China is blaming the U.S. for this global disaster. My prediction. The U.S. is going to retaliate, and their focus will be to cripple the Chinese economy in the same manner that the U.S. economy is right crippled now. If the gloves are not off, they soon will be.
