Are America’s Companies Ready To Fight Russia & China?

Defense One: Are America’s Companies Ready to Fight Russia & China? New Study Aims to Find Out

Reagan Institute panel sets out to identify the ‘National Security Innovation Base’ from workforce skills to technologies, labs, companies and academia.

What does the U.S. military need to confront Russia and China? A broad-ranging study of the required technologies and workforce that has been commissioned by the Ronald Reagan Institute, host of the annual Reagan National Defense Forum, hopes to identify just that.

The effort is expected to look beyond large defense companies and their suppliers into the commercial technology sector — including companies whose employees have resisted executives’ push to seek more business with the military.

WNU Editor: With many Silicon Valley workers voicing their displeasure on working with the Pentagon, coupled with concerns that the infrastructure required to maintain America's defense industry is declining, this is a study that is long overdue. The big worry for me is China. China does have the manufacturing base to develop, maintain, and grow their military. And I can easily see China 10, 20, or 30 years from now having a industrial/military base that will match or (maybe) surpass America's industrial/military base.

Boeing And The Australian Military Have Teamed Up To Develop A Combat Drone Almost As Big As A Fighter Jet

WSJ: Boeing Teams With Australia On New Fighter Drone

The Loyal Wingman is designed to protect piloted aircraft and carry out surveillance missions.

Boeing Co. has teamed up with Australia’s military to develop a combat drone almost as big as a fighter jet, intensifying a global arms race that has seen China and Russia add new stealth and uncrewed aircraft to their fleets.

The move marks another bet by Boeing on potential export sales as the Pentagon has yet to commit to this type of aircraft, though defense analysts said large, cheaper drones could disrupt sales of existing piloted combat jets.

Boeing last year won three big Pentagon contracts after opting to take initial upfront losses that it aims to recoup in part with higher export sales, boosting the growth profile of its defense unit.

The so-called Loyal Wingman drone unveiled Wednesday builds on this strategy and is set to fly for the first time next year in Australia, operating either autonomously or under the direction of a pilot in an accompanying aircraft.

Australia wants the drone to protect warplanes such as the Lockheed Martin Corp. F-35 fighter, a cornerstone of the country’s $150 billion upgrade of its armed forces and a key aircraft for the U.S. and a number of allies.

Cuba Will Lose Its Oil Supply If Opposition Leader Juan Guaidó Takes Over The Venezuelan Government

Wall Street Journal: Cuba’s Reliance Upon Venezuela for Cheap Oil Looms as Potential Threat

Any government under opposition leader Juan Guaidó is expected to quickly halt oil shipments between the socialist allies.

HAVANA, Cuba—The potential collapse of President Nicolás Maduro’s regime poses a threat to Cuba, which relies on Caracas for about 28% of the island’s oil needs.

Venezuela’s opposition says the government’s longstanding oil-barter agreement with Cuba is irrational, coming amid an economic free fall at home, and benefits a Communist dictatorship it reviles.

If Juan Guaidó, who is recognized by the U.S. and about 50 other countries as Venezuela’s legitimate head of state, wrests control of the country from Mr. Maduro, his government is expected to quickly halt the oil shipments. The result would be power outages, fuel shortages and government spending cuts that would cause the Cuban economy to shrink by as much as 10%, according to Omar Everleny Perez, an independent Cuban economist in Havana.

Ted Henken, a Cuba expert at Baruch College in New York, said the end of bargain-basement-priced oil for Cuba would cause a seismic shift on the island. “Cuba has limped along for the past 15 years thanks, basically, to the relationship with Venezuela,” he said.

Is China Playing A Role In The Second Trump - Kim Summit?

Yun Sun, 38 North: The Second Trump-Kim Summit: Where Is China?

On the eve of the second summit between the top leaders of the US and North Korea in Hanoi, most attention is focused on what might be the concrete substance/steps of North Korea’s denuclearization and the reciprocal measures that the US will offer in return that come out of the summit. In sharp contrast to the pivotal role China played regarding North Korea during the first year of the Trump administration, China’s role in influencing North Korea’s strategic calculus no longer attracts the spotlight. However, the idea that Beijing has been marginalized in peace and denuclearization talks with North Korea ignores the quiet, yet active consultation happening behind the scenes.

Mihir Sharma, Bloomberg: India and Pakistan Have Lost Control of the Narrative

When the rivals allow each other to reassure their domestic audiences, the chances of conflict go down. Now, facts have intruded.

India has always had the capacity to strike back at Pakistan in response to the actions of the “non-state actors” its military controls. What New Delhi has always struggled with is the ability to control what follows -- to limit the spiral of escalation, to retaliate without provoking full-fledged war between two nuclear-armed states.

BBC: India demands Pakistan release pilot as Kashmir crisis intensifies

India has demanded the release of a fighter pilot shot down by Pakistan warplanes in a major escalation between the two nuclear powers over Kashmir.

Video showing the pilot - blindfolded and with blood on his face - was shared by Pakistan's information ministry.

India described the images as a "vulgar display of an injured personnel".

Wednesday's aerial attacks across the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Indian and Pakistani territory in Kashmir are the first since a war in 1971.

The incident, in which Pakistan said it had shot down two military jets, has escalated tensions between the two nations, both of whom claim all of Kashmir, but control only parts of it.

Russia And Syria Call On The U.S. To Withdraw Its Troops

Al Jazeera: Russia, Syria urge US to withdraw its troops

Russia and Syria call on the US to quit the war-torn country and to allow for the evacuation of refugees in Rukban.

Russia and Syria have called on the United States to leave Syria and to allow people inside a refugee camp in the southeast of the country to be evacuated by Russian and Syrian forces.

A joint statement released on Wednesday by Russia's Ministry of Defence said Russian and Syrian forces had prepared buses to relocate refugees at the camp in the Rukban area and would guarantee them safe passage so they could start new lives.

Tens of thousands of Syrian refugees are facing harsh living conditions at the Rukban camp near the Syria-Jordan border, despite Russian attempts to set up "humanitarian corridors" through the region last week.
