ABC News Australia: Islamic State claims responsibility for deadly attack in Iran, as Tehran vows revenge 

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for two suicide bombings targeting a commemoration for an Iranian general slain in a 2020 US drone strike, the worst militant attack to strike Iran in decades as the wider Middle East remains on edge. 

The militant group made the claim on social media. Wednesday's attack in Kerman killed at least 84 people and injured another 284. 

It targeted a ceremony honouring Revolutionary Guard general Qassem Soleimani, held as an icon by supporters of the country's theocracy and viewed by the US military as a deadly foe who aided militants who killed American troops in Iraq.

Daily Mail: Bloodbath as explosion kills more than 100 at Iranian ceremony marking military commander Qassem Soleimani's assassination: Footage shows bodies scattered in the street as Tehran condemns 'terror attack' 

At least 103 people have been killed and 170 wounded after two explosions rocked a ceremony that was being held to mark the 2020 assassination of Iran's top commander Qassem Soleimani in a US drone attack. 

The first explosion was quickly followed by a second close to a cemetery in the southeastern city of Kerman where thousands had gathered to mark the four-year anniversary of Soleimani's killing. 

Harrowing video showed scores of bloodied victims lying on the floor as others stumbled away from the blast scene close to the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque where Soleimani is buried in what Iran has described as a 'terrorist attack'.

Iranian state TV reports cruise misssiles can change targets mid-flight 

Iran has equipped its navy with a domestically produced cruise missile that has a range of hundreds of miles, Iranian state media said Sunday. 

The Talaeieh cruise missile is "fully smart," with a range of more than 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) and the capability to change targets after launching, Iran's navy chief, Adm. Shahram Irani, said, according to state TV. 

Another cruise missile, the Nasi, has a 62-mile (100-kilometer) range and can be installed on warships, Irani said.

Reuters: Iran's Khamenei says Tehran was not behind Hamas attack on Israel 

DUBAI (Reuters) - Tehran was not involved in the militant Hamas group's weekend attack on Israel, Iran's top authority Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Tuesday, but hailed what he called Israel's "irreparable" military and intelligence defeat. 

"We kiss the hands of those who planned the attack on the Zionist regime," said Khamenei, who was wearing a Palestinian scarf, in his first televised speech since the attack. 

"This destructive earthquake (Hamas' attack) has destroyed some critical structures (in Israel) which will not be repaired easily ... The Zionist regime's own actions are to blame for this disaster," said Khamenei.

CNN: US Navy intervened to stop Iran seizing two tankers in Gulf of Oman, US defense official says  

The US Navy intervened to stop Iranian Navy ships attempting to seize two oil tankers in separate incidents in the Gulf of Oman early on Wednesday morning, according to a US defense official. 

An Iranian ship opened fire at the tanker in the second seizure attempt, according to the official. 

In the first incident, an Iranian Navy vessel approached the TRF Moss, a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker, in international waters in the Gulf of Oman at approximately 1 am local time, the official said. The tanker was through the Strait of Hormuz and heading toward the Arabian Sea when the Iranian vessel approached.

Al-Monitor: Iran's IRGC seizes second oil tanker in Gulf waters in six days, says US Navy  

The incident happened off UAE coast of Fujairah and involved a Panama-flagged Niovi vessel. 

Iran seized an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, the US Navy said, in the second such capture in less than a week. 

The US Navy's Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, said in a statement that naval forces of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked the Panama-flagged Niovi vessel while transiting toward Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. 

The vessel was subsequently forced to reverse course into Iranian territorial waters in what the Fifth Fleet described as an “unlawful seizure.”

Iran's navy has seized a Marshall Island-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman, according to US officials- the latest in a series of seizures amid greater tensions over Tehran's growing nuclear aspirations. 

America's own maritime military service made the revelation Thursday, while identifying the ship as the Advantage Sweet. 

Officials said the vessel had been heading to Houston - before it was abruptly hijacked in international waters. 

The US Navy said in statement that the unlawful seizure was carried out by Iran's own naval branch.

EurAsian Times: Iran Unveils World’s First ‘Air Defense Boat’ Capable Of Firing Deadly Missiles From Its Vertical Launch System – Analyst 

Iran’s second navy, under the IRGC, has developed the world’s first very small air-defense boat amid rising concerns about Tehran’s burgeoning military power that is seen as a threat by countries in the Persian Gulf and Israel. 

The development of a small defense boat is unique in its own right. 

This is the first-of-its-kind vessel Iran has likely produced for domestic use by the Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, according to a report by Naval Analyst and OSINT expert HI Sutton. 

Subsequently, a video surfaced on social media in which a Nawab surface-to-air missile is released from the Vertical Launch System of the boat. According to military observers, this air defense boat was modified and converted from the British Bladerunner. This is due to the hull’s shape, which resembles the Bladerunner.

With world attention understandably focused on the Ukraine crisis, we should not be surprised that rogue nations should be seeking to exploit the conflict in order to advance their own nefarious agendas. 

For most of the past decade, British security officials, when asked to rank hostile states that threaten our national wellbeing, have put Russia in first place, with China coming a close second. 

Other threats, such as those posed by Iran and North Korea, as well as the continuing challenge presented by militant Islamist groups, have been deemed less immediate while still worthy of close monitoring. 

The suggestion, therefore, that the Islamic Republic of Iran is now regarded as posing the second most potent threat to Britain in security circles shows just how much progress the ayatollahs have made in developing their military strength while the rest of the world has been distracted by the tragic events unfolding in Ukraine.

BBC News: Iran: Suspected school poisonings unforgivable crime, Khamenei says 

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has called the wave of suspected poisonings of schoolgirls in recent months an "unforgivable crime". 

"If there are any people involved in the matter, and there certainly are... the perpetrators must be given the most severe of punishments," he warned. 

More than 1,000 girls at dozens of schools have been affected by unexplained illnesses since November. 

Incidents were reported in at least 15 cities and towns on Sunday alone. 

Authorities have released very little information about their investigations and announced no arrests, but they have accused Iran's "enemies" of using the suspected poisonings to undermine the clerical establishment.

Reuters: Iran rial plunges to new lows amid unrest, international isolation 

Iran's currency fell to a record low against the U.S. dollar on the unofficial market on Sunday, amid the country's increasing isolation over its disputed nuclear programme, human rights violations and the supply of drones to Russia. 

The U.S. dollar was fetching as much as 601,500 rials on Iran's unofficial market on Sunday, compared with 575,000 on the previous day and 540,000 on Friday, according to foreign exchange site Bonbast.com. 

Iranian authorities have blamed the currency's fall on "the enemies' plot" to destabilise the Islamic Republic after months of unrest sparked by the death in custody of a young woman on Sept. 16. 

The rial has lost nearly half of its value since the start of nationwide protests, the boldest challenge to theocratic rule since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran marked the 44th anniversary its revolution on Saturday with state-organised rallies, as anti-government hackers briefly interrupted a televised speech by the president, Ebrahim Raisi. Raisi, whose hardline government faces one of the boldest challenges from young protesters, appealed to the “deceived youth” to repent so they can be pardoned by Iran’s supreme leader.

His live televised speech was interrupted on the internet for about a minute, with a logo appearing on the screen of a group of anti-Iranian government hackers that goes by the name of Edaalate Ali (Justice of Ali). A voice shouted: “Death to the Islamic Republic.”

Warzone/The Drive: Iran Claims It Has Come Under Drone Attack Following Explosions  

The Iranian Ministry of Defense claims drones struck a facility in Isfahan as reports of blasts in other cities cause alarm.  

This is a rapidly developing story and details are bound to change, but as it sits now, explosions rocked an Iranian Ministry of Defense ammunition plant in the central Iranian city of Isfahan amid reports of blasts in three other cities. 

Video captured one of the explosions in Isfahan as security forces swarmed the area around the facility. The Iranian Ministry of Defense later claimed three drones targeted the installation in a “failed attack” that caused no casualties and damaged only the building’s rooftop.

Iran entering Pacific Ocean for first time Iran's navy is set to station warships for the first time in the Panama Canal, a critical trade route in America's backyard that has never before seen an Iranian military presence.

Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, the commander of Iran's navy, said on Wednesday that his forces will establish a presence in the Panama Canal later this year, marking the first time Iran's military has entered the Pacific Ocean. 

Iran in recent years has placed a greater focus on moving its military into Latin American territories as it strengthens relations with anti-American dictators in the region, most notably in Venezuela. 

Iranian vessels have docked more frequently in Venezuela as Tehran's hardline regime seeks to prop up dictator Nicolás Maduro. 

These moves are meant to provoke the United States and signal that Tehran has the ability to station its military apparatus a stone's throw from U.S. territory.

Iran’s supreme leader on Saturday urged a unit of the country’s plainclothes militia to step up action against protesters, in remarks that could escalate a crackdown on months-long anti-regime unrest. 

Protests erupted in Iran in mid-September and quickly escalated into the fiercest opposition to the Islamic Republic leadership in decades following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody after she was arrested for allegedly violating Islamic dress codes.

France 24: Iran has ‘tested satellite launcher successfully’ amid rising hostility with US 

Iran announced Saturday the successful test flight of a rocket capable of propelling satellites into space, three months after launching a satellite with the help of Russia. 

This comes amid rising tensions with Western countries as Tehran is alleged to have provided Moscow with military equipment to help its Ukraine war efforts. 

The United States has repeatedly voiced concern that such launches could boost Iran's ballistic missile technology, leading to the potential delivery of nuclear warheads. But Iran insists it is not seeking nuclear weapons and that its satellite and rocket launches are for civil or defensive purposes only.

Demonstrators in the northwestern city of Marivan are angered by the reported killing of 35-year-old Nasrin Ghaderi. 

Iranian lawmakers, meanwhile, urged severe punishment for "rioters." Fresh demonstrations occurred in the northwestern Iranian city of Marivan on Sunday, following the death of Kurdish student Nasrin Ghaderi.

The head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards has told protesters that Saturday will be their last day of taking to the streets, in a sign that security forces may intensify their crackdown on unrest sweeping the country. 

Iran has been gripped by protests since the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, in the custody of the morality police last month, posing one of the boldest challenges to the clerical leadership since the 1979 revolution.

BBC: 'Live fire used again' as Iran protests swell 

Three demonstrators have been killed during clashes with Iranian security forces in the western town of Mahabad, state media has reported. 

The protesters reportedly targeted government buildings after attending the memorial ceremony of a man killed during unrest in the country. 

Security forces also reportedly opened fire at a cemetery near Khorramabad. 

Rights group Amnesty International says security forces have killed eight people since Wednesday. 

Unrest has rocked the country since Mahsa Amini died in police custody 40 days ago after allegedly wearing her Islamic headscarf "improperly".
